Boy injured and many peace activists suffer from over exposure to tear gas in
Bilin's weekly demo.

At Bilin's protest today, a ten year old boy, Mohammed Iyad Bornat was hit with
a tear gas canister in the thigh. In addition, dozens of peaceful protesters
both internationals and Palestinians, suffered from tear gas inhalation. This
was in an attempt from the Israeli army to repress Bilin's weekly protest
marches against the wall and the illegal settlements which continue to strangle
the village.

The march, organized by the Popular Committee here in Bilin, began after the end
of Friday prayers and set off from outside the Mosque towards the construction
site of the wall along with dozens of people from nearby villages and dozens of
international activists and Israelis.

Protestors raised Palestinian flags, flags with the images of commander Marwan
Al Bargouti, pictures of the two matyrs, Jawaher and Basem Abu Rahma and they
chanted slogans demanding unity and the end of the division and occupation of
Palestine. When the protestors arrived at the east gate of the wall, the Israeli
soldiers repeatedly fired sound bombs, "skunk water", tear gas and rubber coated
steel bullets towards the protestors resulting in minor casualties among the
demonstrators.

Osama and Obama / "You must choose!" / An Anglican state/ To be or not to be

Occupation Magazine  May 3, 2011

Army Seals Nabi Saleh Village
Saed Bannoura - IMEMC - The local Popular Committee Against the Wall and
Settlements, one of dozens of nonviolent committee in the occupied West Bank,
said that the army is targeting the village for its legitimate nonviolent
resistance, and is practicing collective punishment against the residents.

Encounter beneath Prophet Ibrahim's tomb - Jews, Muslims discuss common ground
in Hebron
Aditi Bhaduri - Silent Heroes/Invisible Bridges - Six Israelis toured the Old
City of Hebron (Al-Khalil), along with local Palestinians. The market wore the
look of a haunted place, most shop-owners having moved out due to ongoing
settler violence and only a few still open, covered with anti-Arab racist
graffiti.

Settlers set fire to Huwwara prayer hall
Ma`an - Officials said they feared further settler attacks against Palestinians,
as tensions flare amid a possible unity agreement between rival political
parties Fatah and Hamas. A single voice would be a diplomatic asset when leaders
head to the UN in September to seek recognition of statehood.

Obama must bring his daring to Israeli-Palestinian peace
Haaretz Editorial - First and foremost, bin Laden`s assassination will have an
effect on U.S. domestic politics. (...) If Obama becomes stronger domestically,
that could - and should - drive his administration to make a more aggressive
effort to bring peace to the Middle East.

For most Arabs, bin Laden and his views are long-dead
Daoud Kuttab - Washington Post - In fact, nonviolence and the absence of
fundamentalist Islamic ideology have been hallmarks of the Arab Spring, [in
spite of] dictators claims to the contrary. The demographics of the
demonstrators across the Middle East also show a turn away from Islamic
fundamentalism.

Hamas-Fatah reconciliation: Opportunity or disaster?
Gershon Baskin - Jerusalem Post - The taxes collected by Israel (by agreement)
do not belong to Israel. This is Palestinian money. (...) If the US and other
Quartet members also freeze donations to the PA, the economic successes which
have paved the road of stabilization will collapse.

The Fatah-Hamas Reconciliation Agreement
Shlomo Brom - INSS - Participation in the Palestinian government and the holding
of elections will create more serious pressure on Hamas to work for quiet in the
Gaza Strip, which in turn can help advance the diplomatic process. It appears
that the Obama administration has elements that could support this approach; it
is doubtful that there are counterparts in the current Israeli government.

Deutsche Bahn withdraws from project of new railway line from Tel Aviv to
Jerusalem
Bernd Kleinschmitt - European Jewish Post - The German Railway (Deutsche Bahn)
will no longer participate in building a new rail line from Tel Aviv to
Jerusalem. Because the route will pass through occupied Palestinian territory.
[A BDS success!-bz]

Seattle billboards on Israel canceled after controversy
By Vanessa Ho - Seattle.Com - The Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign (SeaMAC)
placed at several places in the city billboards reading "Equal rights for
Palestinians - Stop funding the Israeli military." After a few days they were
taken down by the billboard company, which had "re-evaluated its decision after
people complained". "We don`t understand what is objectionable about equal
rights..." SeaMAC volunteer Ed Mast said.

Hamas officials: We'll honor unofficial truce with Israel
Jerusalem Post staff & Khaled Abu Toameh - Marzouk said that Hamas did not see
any connection between recognizing Israel's right to exist and the establishment
of a Palestinian state: 'Most of the Arab countries don't recognize Israel, and
yet they continue to deal with the international community.'

Recommended articles of earlier days

Our freedom is now closer
Azzam Tamimi - The Guardian - The popular revolutions across the Arab world have
given Palestinians a new sense of hope.

PA could fail to pay salaries if revenues held
Ma`an News Agency - "More than 170,000 Palestinians are employed by the
Palestinian Authority in both the West Bank and Gaza, and according to Abu
Libdeh, their salaries had been budgeted with some of the $80-100 million in tax
revenues Israel collects on behalf of the PA"

60-year old US peace activist hospitalized after Israeli attack on non-violent
Mayday action
Saed Bannoura - IMEMC News - "Israeli forces attacked a non-violent protest near
Qalqilia Sunday, injuring several international activists including a 60-year
old woman who was hit in the head by shrapnel. Three international peace
activists were arrested by Israeli forces and face deportation and probable
10-year bans from the country" `

`Hamas ready for peace talks with Israel`
Elior Levy - Ynet - Palestinian billionaire Munib al-Masri, who helped mediate
Hamas-Fatah unity pact, says Gaza leadership willing to agree to comprehensive
peace deal based on 1967 borders

IN ONE word: Bravo!
Uri Avnery - Gush Shalom - "The emergence of Palestinian unity should be
welcomed by Israel, as well as by the European nations and the United States.
They should get ready to recognize the State of Palestine within the 1967
borders. They should encourage the holding of free and democratic Palestinian
elections and accept their results, whatever they may be. The wind of the Arab
Spring is blowing in Palestine too. Bravo!"

Plan for National Park Threatens to Strangle East Jerusalems Issawiya
Neighbourhood

Dolev Rahat - AIC - "Jerusalems District Committee for Planning and
Construction recently approved a new plan to establish part of a `national park
surrounding the walls of Jerusalem` on lands belonging to the East Jerusalem
village of Issawiya. From the residents perspective, this eliminates the last
remaining land reserves for Issawiyas development"

Nothing but empty words
Oudeh Basharat - Haaretz - "Nevertheless - and because of `the international

Israeli Authorities Order Bedouins to Leave Homes

________________________________

JERUSALEM, May 5, 2011 (WAFA) – The Israeli authorities Thursday told 50
Palestinian families who live in a valley southeast of Jerusalem to leave their
homes, according to Jerusalem activist Hatem Abdul Qader.

He told WAFA that Israeli soldiers raided the area and gave two weeks notices to
the families living in the area to evacuate their homes.
He charged that what Israel is doing in the valley is ethnic cleansing. He
warned of the consequences of using force against them to evict them.

Academic freedom and open debate should apply to everyone on campus, not just
defenders of Israel's government. CUNY's Board of Trustees recently violated
these values when they made the unprecedented decision to block an honorary
degree for Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Tony Kushner, solely because of his
criticism of Israel. They did so based on the last minute objections of Board of
Trustees member Jeffrey Wiesenfeld, who has a history of opposing open debate.
He opposed the first Arabic dual language public school in the country, opposed
the rights of Muslims to build a mosque in Lower Manhattan, and tried to block
Kristofer Petersen-Overton’s appointment as an adjunct lecturer at Brooklyn
College because of his political opinions about Palestine and Israel. But he
said that Glenn Beck should not be criticized for anti-Semitism.
If you are outraged by this hypocrisy like me, please join me in signing this
petition at http://bit.ly/tonyatcuny to overturn this unjust decision and
support a free and open debate at this public university.

Wall resistance through cameras
http://www.bilin-ffj.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=356&Itemid=1

03\05\2011-Imad Burnat activist model: a life-threatening wall

It’s been 3 years since Imad Burnat was wounded on an accident by the
separation
fence in Bil’in, after 5 years of dedication to document Bil’in’s
resistance
against the wall Imad carries the consequences of his injury alone.

Imad Mohammed Yassin Burnat, 36 years old, from the village of Bil'in and a
young father of four children, joined the Popular Committee against the Wall in
Bil'in from the start. Imad documented with his camera 5 years of Bil’in’s
resistance and the army’s brutality; this includes dozens of demonstrations in
the village and in other villages too, Imad also followed the army’s different
attempts of putting pressure on the village through night raids, curfews, house
arrests etc. His work became very important and was broadcasted in Television
channels worldwide among them Al-Jazeera, Al-Arabia and many more… his footage
was also used in many films such as “Bili’n My Love”. His short films were
shown
worldwide in TV’s, events and on the Internet.

Imad’s footage was used as a witness in numerous cases in Israeli courts.
Many
of the villagers were arrested during demonstrations and, as usual, Israeli
soldiers’ stories were trusted without question, but the videos taken by Imad
proved the lying nature of these soldiers. The protesters were often arrested
for stone-throwing, assaulting the soldiers or attempting to take a soldier’s
weapon. Israeli soldiers made these claims to the court, but the film often
showed the opposite, and embarrassed the soldiers. Some Israeli soldiers
admitted that some of their officers forced them to make a false testimony. On
the other hand, there were many demonstrators who were directly injured, without
posing a threat to the soldiers; Imad’s videos were also used to prosecute
these
soldiers in the courts.

The Israeli soldiers were aware of the risks these cameras posed to them since
the beginning of Bil'in’s popular resistance of the wall. There was never a
raid
on the village without the cameras ready for monitoring. Imad had been targeted
and wounded dozens of times, his cameras were broken by soldiers many times, and
he paid a very high personal price for his work, but he was determined to
continue the struggle through filming, which made the Israeli soldiers to search
for other means. In Oct. 6th 2006, while he was documenting an Israeli invasion
at the village, he was arrested and sentenced to a month in jail and two months
house arrest outside Bil’in. When he was out of that, he returned to his path
of
resistance again.

In 2007, one of the soldiers fired a rubber coated steel bullet at him, which
broke his camera. The rubber bullet is still in the lens of the camera until
today, a testament to the targeting of the press and journalists.

Over the years Imad filmed the progression of the building of the separation
wall and the colony of Modi’in Elit, He also documented the land’s grabbing
of
construction companies, the ongoing construction, the settlers entering to the
apartments, trees uprooting etc. In order o document this Imad spent long
periods of time during the week in the lands beyond the fence so he can to catch
this important images. Imad also frequently took his turn to stay in the outpost
built to protect and guard the land behind the wall. He went there early
mornings, monitoring the violations committed by the settlers, and encouraging
farmers to go and work in their own land.

Imad was nominated, with other members of the popular Committee against the Wall
to accept the Carl von Oostaizhaki Prize.  It is to be awarded by the World
Assembly for Human Rights in Germany on December 17, 2008.  He was going to be
rewarded for his role in the defense of human rights, and had equipped himself
by obtaining a visa. He was impatiently and excitedly awaiting the journey, but
what happened?

On November 22nd, Imad drove as usual, to be in the outpost behind the wall. He
spent a few hours in the outpost with friends and with his camera ready to film
anything that might happen.and he was Ere serve the village land as a volunteer
.  On the way back after he passed the first military gate and was approaching
the second, Imad lost control of the tractor and collided with the wall. Imad
was critically injured; he had internal bleeding, and had undergone several
operations in his spleen, liver and lungs.

After months of hospitalization in hospital Imad was released to his home. He
had a skin implant that protected his organs that enforced him a yearlong
recovery in which his mobility was extremely limited. He had to visit the
hospital to have several operations and many treatments until the present days.
Imad’s doctors determined he would be limited physically for the rest of his
life and won’t be able to work in any physical job. During all this time Imad
was unemployed.

Despite Imad’s dedication for the Palestinian cause and his priceless work,
The
Palestinian Authority decided to define Imad’s accident as a Private event
that
does not concern their responsibility thus leaving him without any economic
support for the rest of his life. This decision is an example of the use the
Palestinian authority in peace activists and popular resistance to political
needs without giving an honest support to the people that are doing sacrifices
for the future of Palestine.

Imad’s accident was not a private event. First, the construction of the wall
in
the high slopes destroyed the original route and forced a new route through the
military checkpoint. This route wasn’t built so people would cross it; on the
contrary, it was a temporal passage that endangered the lives of citizens, such
as Imad. Second, Imad spent many days beyond the fence to document violations
and the ongoing constructions as was mentioned before, his visit on November
22nd in the lands of Bil’in was part of his work of documentation.  And
third,
for the last 5 years Imad’s life was, in general, dedicated to Bil’in’s
struggle. While most people worked to build a better life for there families in
very difficult circumstances, Imad was devoted to documenting the events out of
belief this documentation is crucial and invaluable.

This poor decision leaves Imad very disappointed. He feels this oppression has
to be published and known so that people participating in the popular struggle
in Bil’in and in other places will learn from his experience.

Abduction of a boy and wounding of another in a unity march in Bil'in
http://www.bilin-ffj.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=357&Itemid=1
One boy abducted by Israeli soldiers and another injured in addition of dozens
of cases of severe asphyxia by inhaling tear gas during the clashes that took
place in the village of Bil'in. This happens to be the result of the Israeli's
repression of the weekly protest organized by the Popular Committee Against the
Wall and the Settlements that takes place every Friday after the midday prayer
in the village. The march celebrating the end of the division between Hamas and
Fatah started from the center of the village and tried to reach the separation
wall.

The Protesters, raised Palestinian flags and banners of all factions,
especially Fatah and Hamas, while chanting the national anthem as a message of
welcoming to the signing of the reconciliation agreement and calling for unity
and rejection of differences.

Two Bil'in's citizens, dressed as President Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen and the head
of the political office of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, carried the coffin of the "
Division" and protestors burnt it at the gate of the wall as a message of the
permanent end of the division.

As soon as the protestors reached the fence, Israeli soldiers started firing
tear gas, rubber, tutu and live bullets and stink water causing the injuring of
17 years old Mohammad Abu Rahma who twisted his knee not to mention dozens of
cases of asphyxia due to the tear gas.

In the same time soldiers, hiding behind olive trees captured Iyad Al Khatib, 15
years old, beat him and took him away in an unknown place.

Nevertheless the Popular Committee Against the Wall in Bil'in renew his blessing
of the agreement signed in Cairo between Fatah and Hamas in order to keep the
Palestinian people together and make a united stand against the occupation

The Israeli Committee for

A Middle East Free of

Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Arms

Press release, May 7, 2011

Morderchai Vanunu demands to apply a recently passed law and revoke his
Israeli citizenship. "I have no interest in Israeli citienship, I dont
want to go on living here".

To Mr. Eli Yishai, Minister of the Interior, 2 Kaplan Street, Hakirya,
Jerusalem

Re: Revocation of Citizenship

I am Mordechai Vanunu, who was kidnapped in Rome on September 30, 1986, by
the security services of Israel.

I was tried by the Jerusalem District Court, convicted of espionage, treason
and assistance to the enemy and sentenced to 18 years imprisonment,
following a newspaper interview to the London "Sunday Times" where I told of
the production of materials for nuclear arms in Israel.

I have enacted the democratic principle of the public's right to know.

I have spent 18 years at the Ashkelon Prison, mostly under conditions of
complete isolation. On April 21, 2004 I was released, under severe
restrictions.

Seven years have passed and the restrictions are renewed again and again,
every year, on the basis of the 1945 Defense (Emergency) Regulations. Now
these restrictions are about to be renewed for yet another year.

Since my release I lived for six years in East Jerusalem. Since September
2010 I have lived in Tel Aviv.

On June 1986 I have converted to Anglican Christianity.

Recently, the Knesset passed a law authorizing the revocation of Israeli
citizenship for those convicted of espionage and treason.

For 25 years I am waiting and demanding the restoration of my complete
freedom.

I am asking the State of Israel to revoke my citizenship.

This wish for revocation of citizenship is neither new nor recent.

Now, however, it is supported by the new Citizenship Revocation Law, passed
on March 28, 2011.

I am asking and expecting that this law be enforced to the letter, and that
my citizenship be revoked here and now, under the spirit of the law.

I have no other citizenship, but I can easily get one, even during my
enforced sojourn in Israel, and certainly if I leave the country.

After the treatment and "care" which I got from this country and its
citizens, I cannot feel myself a wanted citizen here.

In the Israeli media and on the Israeli streets I am called "The Atomic Spy"
and "A traitor", harassed and persecuted as an Enemy of the State for 25
years.

I feel myself still imprisoned, still a prisoner of war and a hostage, held
by the state and the government.

After 25 years of getting various harsh penalties from the state, I would
like to see an end to punishments and the realization of my basic human
right to freedom.

I wish to exercise my right to the Freedom of Conscience and the Freedom of
Choice, by choosing not to be a citizen of Israel.

I have no interest in Israeli citizenship, I do not want to live here.

I ask that you revoke my citizenship here and now.

I request that you set me free of Israel, since Israel does not want me nor
do I want Israel.

All that I knew I told, already in 1986, to the English newspaper. I have no
further confidential information.

The time has come to let me leave Israel, after 25 years of imprisonment, a
full quarter of a century!

Mordechai Vanunu

Wilders: The Movie
Sun. 17:00, SOAS, KLT

Filmmakers Joost van der Valk and Mags Gavan ask who Geert Wilders really
is; the investigation leads them to expose a global alignment of far-right
and Islamophobic forces, as the film takes us on a journey from the
Netherlands to London and the United States, before ending up in Israel.

Subject: Criminologists' conference at West Bank settlement is violation of
International Law

Press Release May 8, 2011

Gush Shalom to participants in criminologists' conference, due at West Bank
settlement: The conference itself is complicity in the violation of
International Law

Gush Shalom, the Israeli Peace Bloc, today (Sunday, May 8) sent letters to
Israeli and international criminologists who are to lecture at a conference due
to be held later this month at "University Center" in the Israeli settlement of
Ariel on the Occupied West Bank.

The conference, entitled "Pink Crime - Women, Crime and Punishment"
is scheduled for May 30. Among the lecturers to mentioned as due to speak at the
conference, and to whom Gush Shalom sent its letters. Are criminologists from
universities and colleges within the Israel as well as guest lecturers from
Britain and the United States. The latter include Jean-Pierre Gauci, and Isla
Massonof King's College, London., Breea C. Willingham, State University of New
York  and Dr. Stephen J. Tripodi, Florida State University
.In the letter, signed by Gush Shalom spokesperson Adam Keller, the participants
at the conference are reminded that the conference is due to  take place at a
settlement established in Occupied Territory in flagrant violation of
International Law, and which constitutes a major obstacle to achieving peace
between Israel and the Palestinians. Therefore, says Keller, the holding a
conference in Ariel in itself constitutes complicy in the breach of
International Law.

Keller stats that "Criminology is an academic discipline designed to
scientifically and systematically investigate the effects of crime (crime by
women in this specific case). There is great irony and an inherent contradiction
between these aims of Criminology and the holding a criminologists' conference
in circumstances where the conference itself became complicity in the commission
of a crime."

Following is the letter in full.

Tel Aviv, May 6, 2011

Greetings

I am writing to you because your name appears on the list of lecturers at a
conference due on May 30 this year, entitled " Pink Crime" and dealing with the
phenomenon of crimes committed by women. Definitely a serious issue, well
deserving of being seriously discussed by the practitioners of criminology. I
would like, however, to draw your attention to the  fact that the conference
will take place at the institute known as the "University Center of Samaria",
located at the Israeli settlement of Ariel on the West Bank.

It is important to note that deliberations taking place at such a location,
under the auspices of such an institution, are not – and cannot be – a
"purely
academic" event, free of political connotations. The settlement of Ariel is in
an Occupied Territory under the rule of a military governor. It is not part of
Israel - not according to Israeli law, since no government has ever annexed it,
and certainly not under International Law. The creation and maintenance of the
settlements, including Ariel, is a grave violation of International Law, which
prohibits an occupying power from transferring its citizens to the Occupied
Territory. This, in addition to the settlements being the main obstacle blocking
Israel from reaching peace with its Palestinian neighbors.

Criminology is an academic discipline designed to systematically and
scientifically investigate phenomena of crime (crime by women in this specific
case.) There is a great irony and an irresolvable contradiction involved in the
holding of a Criminology conference at a location and under circumstances which
make the conference itself an accessory to crime.

The settlers in general, and those at Ariel in particular, make great efforts to
provide for themselves a "respectable" and "legitimate" image. The creation of
an academic institution in Ariel, and the inviting of lecturers such as yourself
to speak at academic conferences, is a significant part of this effort.

Should you go through with lecturing at the Ariel conference, in spite of the
above arguments, may I suggest that you devote a few words at the beginning of
your lecture to the contradiction between the goals of the conference, designed
to reduce the effects of crime in human society, and the  severe violation of
International Law constituted by the conference's location.

Sincerely Yours

Adam Keller

A powerful indictment of Obamas contravention of international law in
ordering the murder of Bin Laden.
This echoes Israels use of targeted assassinations of Palestinian
opponents, without due process.
This sets a bad precedent that other countries will follow.

Haim Baram/Obama murdered bin Laden for a fistful of votes

U.S. President Barack Obama ignored all the ethical criteria, and murdered
bin Laden in order to achieve success at any price in advance of the
elections. Even someone who prefers Obama to his opponents has good reason
to fear the cynicism that Obama demonstrated in the bin Laden affair
