Hello,

How are you doing? I am so sorry I wasn't able to inform you on time
about my trip to Turkey to visit my ill cousin. It was an emergency to
me because I had to be here soon enough. I am presently in Istanbul
with my ill cousin so I decided to write to you from here.
She was diagnosed with a critical uterine fibroid. X-ray and scan
shows that her condition is deteriorating because the fibroid has done
a lot of damages to her abdominal area, and an emergency hysterectomy
surgery must be carried-out to save her life.

I am deeply sorry for not writing or calling you before leaving, the
news of her illness arrived to me as an emergency and that she needs
family support to keep her going. I had little time to prepare or even
to inform people about my trip, I hope you understand my plight and
pardon me.

I will like you to please assist me with a soft loan, of $1500
urgently to sort-out my Cousin's bills, the hospital management is
demanding for a deposit of 2500Euros before they can invite a surgeon
from Malaysia to carry out the surgery but she has been place on a
temporary medical care prior the time we make the deposit.

I traveled with little money because I never expected things to be the
way it is right now. What scares me the most is that she is going
through a lot of pain at the moment and the doctors have advice that,
it is necessary that the tumor is operated soon to avoid anything from
going wrong? I will appreciate whatever you can afford to assist me
with, since I don't know your financial status at the moment. I'll pay
back as soon as I return..

I did not take along my phone. So it is currently switched off as I
was unable to roam it with the phone company because of the time frame
I had to be here, so kindly e-mail me promptly and when I get back I
will give you a call
I'll be pleased to read from you soon regarding my request.....
Best Regards
Padraig

Hi folks,

I recently discovered the website 'TV Tropes', which takes an often
light-hearted look at the archetypes / literary devices present in tv shows,
literature, film etc.

Happily, there are sections devoted to the Exiles and Milieu books, so I've
added the links to them in the Links section, plus the link to the Black
Trillium series. After all, I couldn't resist when they said that Haramis is
Spock, Kadya is McCoy, and Anigel is Kirk. Ahaha.

Marc is classified as an Evilutionary Biologist. Note the 'Evil' bit. Hmm, yes,
I can see that. He is also mentioned as an example in the Well Intentioned
Extremist section. Yes, that fits too...

Jack is classifed as a Brain Without a Jar and a Fetus Terrible (poor dear!).

Some words of warning - it is easy to spend hours at this site (I can, anyway)
and you may end up in strange places. I was on the Babylon 5 section once, and
somehow ended up in the Coronation Street section! Scary. :-p

Have fun looking, and feel free to share your thoughts if you wish to. ^_^

LOL TV tropes can be fun. My daughter (12) is clearly addicted to the site and the discussion of tropes. It's pretty funny because she doesn't have much knowledge about various shows other than what she reads on TV tropes, and yet she'll hold forth like an expert. It's definitely perked up her interest in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Happy troping! lol

Hi Tauni,

It's an easy site to be addicted to, that's for sure. I'm just extra happy that
they have obviously heard of Julian May. :D

I loved watching Buffy when it was on and had a soft spot for Spike and Giles.
It's those wonderful Brit accents, I tell you. ^_~

Unifex had no reason to lie to Rogi at that stage of the game, so I am taking it
as read that Unifex did not know who Fury was, until it was revealed in by Rogi
in the writing of his memoirs.

At the time that the Dynasty was planning the Christmas Surprise to redact
Denis, Marc was out of touch with the family, pursuing his own CE research and
laying the foundations of Mental Man and the Metapsychic Rebellion. He seems to
have believed the family's story that Denis had died in his sleep.

Atoning Unifex and, following his injunction, the other four members of the
Lylmik supervisory quincunx, was not interested in preventing the crimes of
Hydra or of Fury. Although Unifex did occasionally confront Fury within the
mental latices, he seems not to have known who Fury's host persona was.

Did Denis know? I do not think so, at least not consciously, or else I feel he
would have gone to his Jesuit mentors for counsel. I think subconsciously, the
awareness was there, which manifested as his aversion to allowing others into
his mind, declining to accept office as a Magnate of the Concilium, and so on.

Further, he may have been trying to grapple with the possibility when he felt
compelled to write "Criminal Insanity in the Metapsychic Mind", which would seem
to refer to Victor, but is also a great big clue to the reader.

And one thing that simply does not make sense is AU's confirming to Fury that Fury sat outside AU's prescience.  Now I can believe that AU could and would willingly lie to Fury.  Besides Julian May doesn't do time paradoxes, so there is no way Fury could have won.

Cheers

Ahhh the haunting & beautiful Mercy!!! I have to say, I always was drawn to
Mercy... maybe as one kindred spirit to another??? But yes, very dissappointed
that though she was fulfilled with the Tanu and was rapidly growing into her
own, she so easily lost those best of attributes that would have kept her
humanity. She so easily used Bryan knowing that he would die but then was aghast
when Aiken killed Sullivan-Tonn. I think maybe she was somewhat of a realist.
She was in the Tanu culture, loved most aspects of it and accepted that they
ruled and without them, she would be nothing. So working with within those
boundaries, she was who she was. She knew Bryan was going to die and gave of
herself to him to give him what happiness she could. She was somewhat in love
with Aiken though her heart totally belonged to Nodonn, but again recognized the
inevitable course of that decision and embraced it. Though I am still in doubt
whether she would have surived her marriage to Nodonn any better. I love Aiken
but was so sad that he felt it necessary to kill Mercy because: one, she gave so
much of herself to him; two that her creative gifts were without equal (with the
exception of maybe Aiken & Marc) and what a loss that would be and three, was
hoping that they would have had a child together!!! That last is just me
wishing! But still was somewhat shocked that he killed her when he could have
just imprisoned her until Nodonn was dead. She would have been his forever. She
was selfish but at the same time giving and cared for the people... but yes, was
ruthless & maninpulative when she needed to accomplish her goals. But really,
who doesn't have their faults??? :o)

I never really liked Mercy. She was too aloof. I really liked how you
explained her though. It's been such a long time since I last read the
Pliocene. Makes me want to re-read. Again.

Hmmmm... Aloof... manipulative... ruthless.  Agreed- but remember, when crazy Greggy did her genetic assay he discovered more tanu genes than human. No matter how much pot, mushrooms sex and ancient pagentry she partook in, she didn't fit in with Milieu culture. She took to the Tanu like a fish to water- she wasn't quite human. Maybe Aiken (Amadan ne briona) was doing her a kindness. However, because of the subsumption, a part of Mercy was melded into Aik's psyche to continue for who knows how long. It had to have been a very strong personality- Aiken had difficulty integrating hers as much as Nodonn's. Only Elisabeth's redaction powers was able to render him sane.

Hi! I think Marc as Atoning Unifex may have know. I believe AU helped save
Dorothea from the Hydra attack and as stated by an earlier response, after 6
million years, I'm quite sure he was vast in his mind powers and could have
figured out who they all were. PLUS, after his sister Madeleine sabotaged Marc's
Mental Man project, which I think he figured out, wouldn't he as AU be watching
for it at the very least, to see how she accomplished it all and then see she
was also in cahoots with grandfather Denis and her cousins? But if she had not
sabotaged it, Marc would have been sucessful and maybe never had his finale
encouter with Jon, negating any reason to flee to the Plicone which in turn may
have altered the entire course of the Unity within the Galaxy and none of it
would ever have happened. SO in the end AU could only stand by and watch and let
it play it as it always was supposed to then, now and to come! WHEW!!!

Hi folks,

It's nice to see that we have some new members, I hope that you will enjoy
yourselves here. :)

I was recently looking at the Amazon website and was pleasantly surprised to see
that an audio version of 'The Many Coloured Land' was released last November.
:)) I am quite tempted to order it myself - the price is US $22. I like the
cover art too.

Hopefully there are plans to make audio versions of the rest of the series, as
it would be a shame to stop at the first volume...

It's been tooo longgggg Mod Mom.

What an exciting post to see, I'm a huge audio book fan and was only thinking
about J May recently and how an audio book would be cool.

I already subscribe to audible.co.uk and I've gone out and got it straight away.
I had a quick listen to the sample and not sure about the narrator, but dont let
that put you off, if the story is strong enough it usually transcends the
narrator (fingers crossed).

so everyone just go and get it and hopefully this will be the start of the whole
series

Hi Niall,

Thanks for that. :)

It's nice to have something new to post about in the JM Universe(TM). I will be
interested to see what you think of the audio book after you've listened to it.
:)

I'm sure a spike in sales would increase the chances of future projects...

The audio books are certainly a breath of fresh air. :)

I know I have fond dreams of some sort of TV / movie adaption of the books.
After all, I live in NZ where the Lord of the Rings books were filmed. If they
could be filmed, surely other stories can be. Or a decent effort at filming them
made, anway...

Hi Daithi,

I'm glad to hear that, it sounds like you came to the right place at the
(eventually) right time. :)

all! ;-) ]

Hi folks,

Well, I've ordered the audio version of 'The Many Coloured Land' from Amazon and
I'm looking forward to it arriving. :)

On the lighter side, here is a link to something I saw today - a 'Chart of
Superpowers' that puts various powers into categories and mentions the heroes /
villains who have specific powers.

I know it's not connected to JM's worlds but it was something the geek side of
me appreciated and thought I would share. ;)

Nearly finished the audio book, and despite my initial reservations and my
reaction to the first 20 mins or so, it has been really good.

Some pronunciations took a bit to get used to, particularly exotic names. The
reader may be getting them right, but for years the way I say them in my head is
the way they should be lol. French words are a bit of a struggle for the reader,
but the pronunciation of epoch is my main bug bear, please stop saying epic.

All in all it's being great, and not looking forward to it ending as I want to
hear the reaming books ASAP. I'm going to contact Blackstone Audio and see
if/when the others will be complete.

Happy listening Mod Mom 2

Just finished a full re-read of the whole f&wk!n decology:

  * Though I am no hoite-de-toite, and my opine is only worth the digital dross
it's written on, I have not found, and I'm sad to think I may never find, a
Sci-Fi/Fantasy series that is so damn good, I seem to enjoy re-reading it every
three years or so, since... 1986? Wow...

  * I'm always amazed at how I'm pulled back in and thrilled, and how new bits
and details will resonate each time.

  * I found Magnificat to be particularly good this go-around, and I have to
admit I think it was only my second time reading it. The first time I recall
being rather disappointed with it, but maybe I wasn't mature enough, or just
plain bummed at the series ending.

  * The characters are grand, and the only one I find myself (guiltily!)
occasionally fast-forwarding through is... Elisabeth :-( I hate to admit it,
but she feels just a little too damn sorry for herself--though I did enjoy her
re-birth with Marc.

  * I "liked" Marc before, but I really enjoyed the Marc/Rogi/Jack triumvirate
this time around.

  * Like so many others here, I would love to see May's grand vision move on... I
would love to see a high-end, HBO-quality, live-action mini-series. Does anyone
know if any of this work has ever been pitched? Does anyone other than Madame
May own any "video" options or rights?

  * As a little bit of a "gamer-geek," I'd personally love to see a good
role-playing game adaptation (pen & paper; not the video variety). But it's
always transferring all the "world-knowledge" to others that's so challenging.

  * Does anyone else buy mail-order copies of Many Colored Land, and just have it
mailed directly to friends? I've done this twice recently, but I need to do more
of it. This series is just too f&wk!n good to fade into obscurity, dammit!

Thanks to all of you who have made a good group site. It's nice to know I'm not
the only one who thinks this series is one of the most insanely great
sci-fi/fantasy series ever written!

I couldn't agree with you more Anthony. I've re-read series at least once a year
since I first picked up "Many Coloured Land" at a second hand book store in the
late '80's. I remember waiting years for Jack the Bodiless-I've never
anticipated a book more happily.

I always assumed that this series would attain the stature of Dune, Foundation
and Lord of the Rings and I really don't understand why it hasn't (apart from
LOTR I think its possibly better than any of them).

In terms of depth of vision, depth of TIME, writing style and research-its
peerless.

A well-made mini-series would be brilliant! lets keep hoping

how this group goes through long dead intervals with no activity whatsoever and
then suddenly develops an explosion of commentary, debate and (IMHO) absolutely
marvelous brainstorming.

To wit: the notion of a direct-to-DVD movie or even, perhaps, a mini-series on
the SciFi Channel.

To dispense with the caveats immediately: y'all do realize that such an
undertaking would require an investment of close to 75 million dollars in
today's economy, even with CGI? Good, because such an undertaking would also
require the services of a production staff that must necessarily pitch this
project tirelessly for well over a year, possibly two or three. Consider also
that JM has probably ALREADY been approached by Hollyweird on numerous occasions
about translating this into a movie or mini-series. A pity Our Lady does not
communicate with the outside world much due to her advanced years, but a comment
or two from her would be most instructive.

Having said that, there is absolutely no harm in speculating, brainstorming,
fantasizing and playing Hollywood producer with these marvelous and absolutely
incomparable books. I've been doing this since 1988 when I first stumbled across
a copy of "The Many-Colored Land" at a sci-fi bookstore here in Puddletown. It's
irresistible, isn't it? It makes "Dune", "LOTR" and any other SF epic look
rather unfinished by comparison.

So I propose a game, my friends. (Or contest, if you prefer, but no prizes to be
awarded save that of emotional satisfaction) Once a week, let us select a
character from The Pliocene Exile series (we'll tackle the Galactic Milieu
series later. THIS should occupy us for quite a while) and then play casting
director with that character; i.e., who would YOU cast in the role? I propose
the following limits: no actor or actress who passed away before the year that
"The Many-Colored Land" was released can be suggested (example: Laurence Olivier
as Bryan Grenfell) and no actor or actress UNDER the age of 25 years old today.
(The point being that, although there are many talented young actors and
actresses working in the entertainment industry today, their visibility and
familiarity with many of us may be somewhat limited.) Further limiting the pool:
any actor or actress suggested must have a minimum of TWO movies or TWO TV
appearances to his or her credit, thereby ensuring their familiarity to us all.
We may go to whatever lengths we see fit in justifying/explaining our choices
and therein lies the fun of the game: how we interpret May's characters and how
any given actor or actress could be expected to interpret that character.

What say you, my friends? Does this sound like a fun game? I hereby propose the
first character to be cast:

FELICE LANDRY. My choice: Mary Stuart Masterson. Physically, she's perfect:
slight of stature, blond, rather pretty in a gamine sort of fashion, intense and
quite capable of portraying madness. ("Benny and Joon")

Debate! And Slonshal and Slitsal!

I just looked up Masterson (loved Benny and Joon) and she's too old to
play 16-18 year old Felice. Sorry, I know you wanted actresses 25+. but
it's at least got to be someone that can look like a teen. Shouldn't be
too hard, but I'm not familiar enough with actresses to do so. :-)

I don't think masterson can play Felice's role. Se needs to be more... like
Goddess Diana the Huntress and quite more young.

Maybe Emma Watson... a little more blonde ;)

I agree. The Saga of Pliocene Exile is the greatest series of books ever. I too
have been re-reading the entire series every year or so. They are old friends,
designed to make any day brighter. I buy the out of print copies most every
time I see them since I wear them out so fast. I would put them at #1 and Dune
series at 2.
My choice for Marc wold be Nicholas Hoult. He is a young British actor about
21/22 slowly gaining prominence. He is a really good actor but what makes him
ideal for Marc is his eyebrows. I had never seen winged eyebrows before, only
read about them in the JM book about Marc. But look at this guy. His trademark
is his eyebrows. Plus he is an awesome actor. He was the little boy in "about a
boy". Google him and see what you think.

A great idea :D <--- dontcha just luv these eee-mote-i-cons?

I understand the "constraint" of the "young" Felice, but I also feel that in this case, I might well be willing to sacrifice some youth for an actress who could capture the (hell)fire of Felice...

Now this may sound like a bit of a long-shot, but bear with me a minute:

The "right" actress would not only have to capture the "fiery arrival" Felice, but the "pitiful, mad, raven/destroyer" Felice.

Also cast aside any preconceived notions you have of actresses' "hair," as this I think is one of the easiest elements to modify.

My choice for the actress with not only the "non"-human beauty, but the fiery acting chops -- and the eyes to pull your very soul from your body is...

Christina Ricci

I really can't think of an actress on the planet who has the "eyes" of Felice like Ms. Ricci...

And watch a couple of minutes of her in "Black Snake Moan" to see how "mad n' bad" Felice could be ;-)

Ah, yes... I would give a little of my soul to see Ricci as Felice.

Who's got an Aiken Drum?

Cheers!
