Lots of exciting things are happening in the world of publishing…let's talk about it!
Hello all and welcome to the newest edition of the Big Scary Newsletter… there's lot of wild stuff to catch you up on!
MEN OFHORROR
2009 CALENDAR
Just as I turn 50 years old I get to be a calendar boy.(Don't panic, no Speedos were involved). This calendar features twelve horror writers and their books.A portion of the proceeds will be donated to ecological nonprofit organizations.
Also appearing are J F Gonzalez, Michael Laimo, Gareth Evans, Joe McKinney, CJ West, Roy Hollar, Anthony Marr, Michael West, Martin Treanor, Gregory Frost, and "The Host" Robert Johnathan Skullduggery
Buckle up…it's about to get weird.ABC/Disney Stage 9 has just picked up ON THE SLAB, a brand new horror/SF entertainment news show I co-created with Emmy Award-winner Laura Schrock. This Internet-based show will hit in October and it'll be a dark ride through strange territory. I'll post new details as I get `em.
CRYPTOPEDIA SOLD TO TRANSYLVANIA
THE CRYPTOPEDIA: A Dictionary of the Weird, Strange and Downright Bizarre (Citadel Press, ISBN-10: 0806528192; $16.95) which won the 2007 Bram Stoker Award for Best Nonfiction Book will now be available in the homeland of the real Dracula: Transylvania.
The reprint rights have just been sold to a Romanian publisher which means that the book will be for sale in Transylvania. How delicious is that?
I've been dazzled by the overwhelmingly positive reception that BAD MOON RISING, the final book of the Pine Deep Trilogy, has been getting. I've had tons of fan mail, 5-star Amazon reviews, and lots of blog postings from fans who are all saying that this is the best book of the trilogy.
Folks are also pretty jazzed about all of the `guest stars'.Yeah, I know guest stars aren't a very common thing in novels, but since Pine Deep celebrates Halloween as the center of its tourism I thought it would be fun to have a number of real folks from the horror movie industry appear as themselves: celebrities visiting Pine Deep just at the wrong time. So, expect to see actor Ken Foree (star of the original Dawn of the Dead); actor/director and make-up effects wizard Tom Savini; screenwriters James Gunn (Dawn of the Dead; Slither) and Stephen Susco (The Grudge); scream queens Brinke Stevens and Debbie Rochon; drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs; and actor/stuntman and haunted attraction consultant Jim O'Rear.
Also appearing is Louisiana's 2007 Blues Guitarist of the Year Mem Shannon!
BAD MOON RISING is available everywhere books are sold.

If you are in one of my classes, or plan to enroll in an upcoming program, please read this:
As part of the expansion of Career Doctor for Writers and the launch of Writer Corner USA - Global I will no longer be based solely in Doylestown.Classes will now be divided between the new Borders Bookstore in Warrington (Route 611 and Street Road in Valley Square), the BucksCounty Coffeehouse, and several other venues. We will also be starting a new series of online classes and chats.None of my classes will meet at the Writers Corner location at Oakland and Main Streets.
This is an exciting new direction for Career Doctor and Writers Corner USA – Global programs. We'll be interacting with a variety of bookstores, libraries, coffeeshops and other places where writers meet.In short, we'll be spreading out into the community, but it will be a much larger community.
The Writers Corner USA – Doylestown location will be home base for the WildRiver Review and Creative Kids programs run by Brian O'Connell and Joy Stocke.
The Writers Corner USA website (www.writerscornerusa.com) is undergoing a complete overhaul and soon visitors will be able to get updates on both the Global and Doylestown divisions.

The Writers Coffeehouse is BACK!
Come and join us on Sunday, August 10, from noon to 3pm at the Bucks
County Coffeehouse in Doylestown PA for a free networking session.
It's a bunch of writers sitting around talking about writing…with
coffee.
No agenda…just chat about the latest trends in the industry, about
markets, about pitching and selling, about frustration, about
keeping the inner fires alight, about dealing with our families,
about how damn tough it is to make it as a writer at the best of
times and what writers can do to stay afloat in these troubled
economic waters.
This is stuff that writers can't really talk about with someone who
isn't a writer. Writers get other writers: they're of a species.
We used to hold these coffeehouses at the Writers Corner USA, but
with that closing we moved to a nice comfy new home at Bucks County
Coffee.
Now we're back and everyone is pretty jazzed that there's at least
one place each month where they can go and be themselves around
other people who understand them: WRITERS.
No previous publishing experience necessary…the Writers Coffeehouse
attracts everyone from absolute beginner to award-winners and
bestsellers. We're all writers.
So come on out and join us. This will be a monthly event. Grab a
cup of coffee and head on downstairs to the Conference Room.
See you Sunday.

Hey guys, my new novel comes out on Tuesday. Here's the skinny…
PATIENT ZERO by Jonathan Maberry (St. Martins Griffin; trade
paperback)
DESCRIPTION:
When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week there's
either something wrong with your world or something wrong with your
skills... and there's nothing wrong with Joe Ledger's skills. And
that's both a good, and a bad thing. It's good because he's a
Baltimore detective that has just been secretly recruited by the
government to lead a new taskforce created to deal with the problems
that Homeland Security can't handle. This rapid response group is
called the Department of Military Sciences or the DMS for short. It's
bad because his first mission is to help stop a group of terrorists
from releasing a dreadful bio-weapon that can turn ordinary people
into zombies. The fate of the world hangs in the balance....
REVIEWS:
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY: "Plenty of man-to-zombie combat, a team traitor
and a doomsday scenario add up to a fast and furious read.
KIRKUS: "The book is as fun and funny as it is chilling and thrill-
packed. Joe is a fantastic character, full of compassion, real
vulnerabilities and a deliciously dark sense of humor."
COVER QUOTES:
"I had a fine old time reading PATIENT ZERO. Jonathan Maberry has
found a delightful voice for this adventure of Joe Ledger and his
crew: while the action is heated, violent, and furious, the writing
remains cool, steady, and low-key, framing all the wildness and
exuberance in a calm rationality (given an almost comic edge) that
renders it as palatable as your favorite flavor of ice cream. This is
a lovely feat, and Maberry has written a memorable book." - PETER
STRAUB
"A fast-paced, creepy thriller that as prickly as a hospital needle
and sounds a little too convincing. This guy is good." –JOE R.
LANSDALE
"Brilliant, shocking, horrifying, it puts the terror back in
terrorist." – JAMES ROLLINS, New York Times bestselling author of The
Judas Strain
"PATIENT ZERO is a first-rate thriller with a bioterror angle that is
as horrific as it is plausible. Maberry's prose sears, his dialog
cuts like a knife, and his characters crackle with life. Joe Ledger
rules."–DOUGLAS PRESTON, co-author of The Wheel of Darkness and The
Book of the Dead A dark, chilling and funny thriller about zombies
"Patient Zero is high-octane excitement from beginning to end, and
the start of a fabulous new series. Joe Ledger and the DMS have my
vote as the team to beat when combating terrorist threats on a grand
scale." - DAVID MORRELL, New York Times bestselling author of FIRST
BLOOD and CREEPERS
"Scary, creepy, and gripping--PATIENT ZERO is 'Night of the Living
Dead' meets Michael Crichton."--JOSEPH FINDER, New York Times
bestselling author of Power Play
"Brutal action, insanely intelligent, and so real that the hair on
the back of your neck stands up!" -- L.A. BANKS, The Vampire Huntress
Legends Series, New York Times Best-selling Author
