Jonathan Maberry's BAD MOON RISING Now in Stores

For the people of Pine Deep, Pennsylvania, things started going bad a month from Halloween when serial killer Karl Ruger cut a bloody swath throw town in the Bram Stoker Award-winning GHOST ROAD BLUES.

"Reminiscent of Stephen King.  This is horror on a grand scale."

Publishers Weekly

"This is haunting, complex, terrifying and deeply humane novel

is a heady feast for those who've been looking for something new

lyrical in horror."

-Gary A. Braunbeck, author of Prodigal Blues and Mr. Hands

In DEAD MAN'S SONG, the mystery deepened as Crow and his friends probed deep into Pine Deep's violent and haunted history, ending in a horrifying and deadly battle on Friday the 13th.

"This is an immensely entertaining American horror

saga in the tradition of Stephen King or Robert McCammon.

Just open the book and it's Halloween."

-Fangoria

"A fabulously written novel that grips you from its first line to its last."

-Yvonne Navarro, author of Hellboy and Aliens: Music of the Spears

Now Halloween is finally here and as a bloody moon rises above the town, an ancient evil launches a red wave of murder and destruction against Pine Deep.  BAD MOON RISING is the ultimate battle between the dwindling forces of good and an army of the dead.

"One of the best supernatural thrillers of recent years."

-John Connolly, author of The Unquiet

Multiple Stoker Award winner Jonathan Maberry pulls off the near impossible

in his latest novel, Bad Moon Rising (Pinnacle, 6 May 2008), the last

in the Pine Deep trilogy: a truly satisfying ending to a horror epic.

Rocky Wood, author of the Stephen King: The Non-Fiction

and Stephen King: Uncollected, Unpublished

BAD MOON RISING features `guest appearances' by real-world celebrities from the horror industry: Ken Foree (star of the original Dawn of the Dead), Tom Savini (makeup effects master for Night of the Living Dead), Stephen Susco (screenwriter of The Grudge and The Grudge 2), James Gunn (screenwriter for the remake of Dawn of the Dead and writer/director of Slither), scream queens Brinke Stevens and Debbie Rochon, Jim O'Rear (horror film actor and stuntman), Joe Bob Briggs (drive-in movie critic), and blues guitar legend Mem Shannon!  It's their bad luck to be in Pine Deep with the Halloween Festival turns into a bloodbath!

Hello all and welcome to the newest edition of the Big Scary Newsletter… there's lot of wild stuff to catch you up on!

MEN OF HORROR

2009 CALENDAR

Just as I turn 50 years old I get to be a calendar boy.  (Don't panic, no Speedos were involved).  This calendar features twelve horror writers and their books.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to ecological nonprofit organizations.

Also appearing are J F Gonzalez, Michael Laimo, Gareth Evans, Joe McKinney, CJ West, Roy Hollar, Anthony Marr, Michael West, Martin Treanor, Gregory Frost,  and "The Host" Robert Johnathan Skullduggery

The calendar retails for $22.45 each.  Check it out here: http://www.zazzle.com/men_of_horror_calendar-158129048981495941

ON THE SLAB

Buckle up…it's about to get weird.  ABC/Disney Stage 9 has just picked up ON THE SLAB, a brand new horror/SF entertainment news show I co-created with Emmy Award-winner Laura Schrock.  This Internet-based show will hit in October and it'll be a dark ride through strange territory.  I'll post new details as I get `em.

CRYPTOPEDIA SOLD TO TRANSYLVANIA

THE CRYPTOPEDIA: A Dictionary of the Weird, Strange and Downright Bizarre (Citadel Press, ISBN-10: 0806528192; $16.95) which won the 2007 Bram Stoker Award for Best Nonfiction Book will now be available in the homeland of the real Dracula: Transylvania.

The reprint rights have just been sold to a Romanian publisher which means that the book will be for sale in Transylvania.  How delicious is that?

BAD MOON RISING

 www.ghostroadblues.com

I've been dazzled by the overwhelmingly positive reception that BAD MOON RISING, the final book of the Pine Deep Trilogy, has been getting.  I've had tons of fan mail, 5-star Amazon reviews, and lots of blog postings from fans who are all saying that this is the best book of the trilogy.

Folks are also pretty jazzed about all of the `guest stars'.  Yeah, I know guest stars aren't a very common thing in novels, but since Pine Deep celebrates Halloween as the center of its tourism I thought it would be fun to have a number of real folks from the horror movie industry appear as themselves: celebrities visiting Pine Deep just at the wrong time. So, expect to see actor Ken Foree (star of the original Dawn of the Dead); actor/director and make-up effects wizard Tom Savini; screenwriters James Gunn (Dawn of the Dead; Slither) and Stephen Susco (The Grudge); scream queens Brinke Stevens and Debbie Rochon; drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs; and actor/stuntman and haunted attraction consultant Jim O'Rear.

Also appearing is Louisiana's 2007 Blues Guitarist of the Year Mem Shannon!

BAD MOON RISING is available everywhere books are sold.

Pinnacle Books; $6.99

Also check out the first two books of the Pine Deep Trilogy: GHOST ROAD BLUES and DEAD MAN'S SONG

Jonathan Maberry Classes PLEASE READ NOW

If you are in one of my classes, or plan to enroll in an upcoming program, please read this:

As part of the expansion of Career Doctor for Writers and the launch of Writer Corner USA - Global I will no longer be based solely in Doylestown.  Classes will now be divided between the new Borders Bookstore in Warrington (Route 611 and Street Road in Valley Square), the Bucks County Coffeehouse, and several other venues.  We will also be starting a new series of online classes and chats.  None of my classes will meet at the Writers Corner location at Oakland and Main Streets.

This is an exciting new direction for Career Doctor and Writers Corner USA – Global programs.  We'll be interacting with a variety of bookstores, libraries, coffeeshops and other places where writers meet.  In short, we'll be spreading out into the community, but it will be a much larger community.

The Writers Corner USA – Doylestown location will be home base for the Wild River Review and Creative Kids programs run by Brian O'Connell and Joy Stocke.

The Writers Corner USA website (www.writerscornerusa.com) is undergoing a complete overhaul and soon visitors will be able to get updates on both the Global and Doylestown divisions.

For now, any questions about Career Doctor for Writers or Writers Corner USA – Global should be sent to me at careerdoc4writers@... or jonathan_maberry@...

We will be having more classes, including brand new programs on marketing, computers for writers, craft of writing, and specialty events!

So…this week is ThrillerFest 2008, a great big mutha of a convention for the thriller genre that will be a who's who of the genre.  Here's the website link: http://www.thrillerwriters.org/

Expect to see James Rollins, Clive Cussler, James Patterson, David Morrell, MJ Rose, F. Paul Wilson, Steve Berry, Lee Child, Heather Graham, Joseph Finder, Barry Eisler, Gayle Lynds, Brad Thor, Jason Pinter, C. J. Lyons, Michael Palmer, and everybody else.  It's going to be insane.

I'll be there to do a couple of panels and generally network and hobnob.  Should be a blast.

My first panel will be THE THRILL OF THE FIGHT on Friday at 10 a.m.  Mark T. Sullivan and I will be giving a talk & demonstration on the realities of unarmed combat and how that can be worked realistically into thriller novels.  I'll be able to tap into my 40-plus years in jujutsu and the work I did as a bouncer and a bodyguard in the entertainment industry.

Here's Mark's website… check him out.  http://www.marktsullivan.com/

I'm scheduled to do a signing for BAD MOON RISING (Pinnacle Books) from 12 – 12:30 on Friday.

And I'll be chatting up PATIENT ZERO (due from St. Martins Press in March 2009).

Saturday I've just been added to the panel DOWN THESE MEAN STREETS: Noir Thrillers, along with Tim Maleeny, Con Lehane, Pat Mullen, Mark Schorr, Cody McFadye and Joe Kolman.  That's rolls out at 4pm on Saturday and should be a terrific discussion.

If you're at the event, look me up.  If not, I'll give you the skinny when I get back.

Keep it fun, kids.

The Writers Coffeehouse is BACK!

Come and join us on Sunday, August 10, from noon to 3pm at the Bucks
County Coffeehouse in Doylestown PA for a free networking session.
It's a bunch of writers sitting around talking about writing…with
coffee.

No agenda…just chat about the latest trends in the industry, about
markets, about pitching and selling, about frustration, about
keeping the inner fires alight, about dealing with our families,
about how damn tough it is to make it as a writer at the best of
times and what writers can do to stay afloat in these troubled
economic waters.

This is stuff that writers can't really talk about with someone who
isn't a writer. Writers get other writers: they're of a species.

We used to hold these coffeehouses at the Writers Corner USA, but
with that closing we moved to a nice comfy new home at Bucks County
Coffee.

Now we're back and everyone is pretty jazzed that there's at least
one place each month where they can go and be themselves around
other people who understand them: WRITERS.

No previous publishing experience necessary…the Writers Coffeehouse
attracts everyone from absolute beginner to award-winners and
bestsellers. We're all writers.

So come on out and join us. This will be a monthly event. Grab a
cup of coffee and head on downstairs to the Conference Room.

See you Sunday.

-Jonathan

KIRKUS REVIEW OF PATIENT ZERO

PATIENT ZERO by Jonathan Maberry

This item scheduled for Kirkus Review January 15 2009

A dark, chilling and funny thriller about zombies from Maberry (Zombie CSU: The Forensics of the Living Dead, 2008, etc.).

Joe Ledger, a Baltimore cop on leave after killing a suspected terrorist during a raid on a warehouse, just wanted to spend a day girl-watching at the beach. So when four FBI agents corner him as he's getting into his car and take him on a mandatory ride in their black SUV, he's a little miffed, especially since he's about to leave the department and join their ranks at Quantico. But any negative emotion he feels about being snatched up is soon dwarfed by what goes through his head when Mr. Church, head of the top secret Department of Military Sciences, locks him in a room a short time later and forces him to kill the very same terrorist he shot to death less than a week before. The whole thing is a recruiting test, and after Joe, an Army veteran and martial-arts expert, dispatches the terrorist—again—without hesitation, Church invites him to join the DMS, a government organization created to battle threats that fall outside the purview of other government organizations. Threats from zombie terrorists, for instance. Soon, Joe is leading a tactical team, as he and the rest of the DMS try to stop terrorist El Mujahid, his mad-scientist bride Amirah and Sebastian Gault, their wealthy Western backer, from unleashing a plague that turns regular people, soldiers and terrorists alike into bloodthirsty, infectious zombies. The book is as fun and funny as it is chilling and thrill-packed. Joe is a fantastic character, full of compassion, real vulnerabilities and a deliciously dark sense of humor.

An immensely entertaining package.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY REVIEW OF PATIENT ZERO

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY – Deceember 1 2008

Patient Zero Jonathan Maberry. St. Martin's Griffin, $14.95 paper (432p) ISBN 978-0-312-38285-8

While raiding a terrorist cell at the start of this exciting thriller from Stoker-winner Maberry (Dead Man's Song), Baltimore PD Det. Joe Ledger shoots two .45 slugs into Javad Mustapha, killing him very dead. Four days later, while trying out for a secret government antiterrorist unit, Joe has to kill Javad all over again. It appears the terrorists have figured out a way to make zombies, and they're about to turn the legions of the undead loose on the world. Terrorist El Mujahid and his brilliant scientist wife, Amirah, who created the zombies, are working with villainous international businessman Sebastian Gault. That Sebastian and Amirah are having wild sex in the lab shows that loyalties within the group of conspirators aren't all they should be. Joe leads a team of elite fighters against the zombies, a job he performs with spectacular skill. Plenty of man-to-zombie combat, a team traitor and a doomsday scenario add up to a fast and furious read. (Mar.)

AUTHORS TO WATCH IN 2009

AM NY, a free daily paper provided to commuters in New York ran a feature story on Authors to Watch in 2009.  The story, by reviewer Ted Geoghegan, named five "Potential Stars of 2009", a list that included Catherine Banner (author of THE EYES OF THE KING), Bethany Griffen (HANDCUFFS), Jonathan Maberry (PATIENT ZERO), Max Brooks (THE ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE: RECORDED ATTACKS), and Stacey Jay (YOU ARE SO UNDEAD TO ME).

FACEBOOK

Come join me on Facebook, the Net's most useful social networking site.  That's where I post most of my updates and chat with my friends, colleagues, and fans.

I have two Facebook pages.  The first is my main page:  http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonathan-Maberry/803028269

PUNISHER: NAKED KILL

I've started doing some freelance comic writing for Marvel Comics and my first book, PUNISHER: NAKED KILL will be published by their adults-only MARVEL MAX line in April.  This is not a story for kids.  Frank Castle, the Punisher is a man who lost his entire family during a gangland shootout and who has declared war on the mob.  In NAKED KILL, the Punisher learns of a group making murder porn videos.  Problem is that the videos are being shot in a building with sophisticated security and failsafe devices –which means he can't bring any weapons in with him.  This won't stop the Punisher –he can get quite inventive when he needs to.  PUNISHER: NAKED KILL is a 32 action-packed story beautifully illustrated by noted comic artist Laurence Campbell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurence_Campbell

*************************************************************

WOLVERINE: GHOSTS

For an upcoming Wolverine Anniversary Special (scheduled for April), I did an 8-page short tale called GHOSTS.  It ties in to Wolverine's yearly pilgrimage to Japan to honor the memory of his dead wife, Mariko.  It's a spooky, action-filled tale being illustrated by artist Tomm Coker. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomm_Coker

*************************************************************

ZOMBIE CSU UPDATE

Zombie CSU: The Forensics of the Living Dead has become an international bestseller.  Apparently there are a whole lotta folks out there as obsessed with zombies as I am.  Kinda cool, kinda weird.

The book is (strangely) to be found in the New Age/Occult section of most bookstores.  Yeah, I know it's pop culture, but we writers have no say in this sort of thing.  It's also available online through the publishers (Citadel Press), Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and a slew of others.

*************************************************************

NEW YORK COMIC CON – BOOK SIGNING

I'll be doing a signing of PATIENT ZERO at the New York Comic Con on Saturday February 7 from noon to 1 pm.  Come out and snag a copy of the first book in this new series of techno-thrillers a whole month before it lands in stores.  For more info on the NY Comic Con visit their website at www.nycomiccon.com/

*************************************************************

BAD MOON RISING –BACK IN PRINT

BAD MOON RISING, the middle book of the Pine Deep Trilogy (following GHOST ROAD BLUES and leading into BAD MOON RISING) will be BACK IN PRINT this month.  It sold out faster than anyone expected and Pinnacle Books is rushing a new printing to stores soon.  Place your order now with your local bookseller.

THE LIARS CLUB

The Liars Club (Philly) is now in its second year of existence (allegedly).  This group of professional writers and storytellers was formed for networking, workshops, group book signings, and general inappropriate behavior.  The current lineup of the Liars Club (Philly) includes WILLIAM LASHNER (NY Times bestselling author of legal thrillers); L. A. BANKS (New York Times best-selling author of the Vampire Huntress series); JONATHAN MABERRY (multiple Bram Stoker award winning author and co-creator/consulting producer for ON THE SLAB for ABC/Disney); GREGORY FROST (currently writing fantasy for Random House);  LAURA SCHROCK (Emmy Award-winning TV producer and scriptwriter and co-creator/consulting producer for ON THE SLAB for ABC/Disney); JON McGORAN (who writes forensics mysteries for Penguin as D H Dublin); KELLY SIMMONS (her debut novel from Atria nailed a starred review from PW); ED PETTIT (book reviewer for the Philadelphia Inquirer and renowned expert on Edgar Allen Poe); DON LAFFERTY (magazine feature writer and consultant on Social Networking); and DENNIS TAFOYA (author of crime novels to St. Martins Minotaur); MERRY JONES (mystery author); KEITH STRUNK (actor, director, and author); and MARIE LAMBA (author of Young Adult novels for Random House).

WRITERS COFFEEHOUSE THIS SUNDAY

Come and join us on Sunday, January 25, from noon to 3pm at the SAXBY COFFEE (formerly Bucks County Coffeehouse in Doylestown PA for a free writers networking session.

It's a bunch of writers sitting around talking about writing…with coffee.  No agenda…just chat about the latest trends in the industry, about markets, about pitching and selling, about frustration, about keeping the inner fires alight, about dealing with our families, about how damn tough it is to make it as a writer at the best of times and what writers can do to stay afloat in these troubled economic waters.

No previous publishing experience necessary…the Writers Coffeehouse attracts everyone from absolute beginner to award-winners and bestsellers.  We're all writers.

So come on out and join us.  This is a regular event that meets on the last Sunday of every month).

Grab a cup of coffee and head on downstairs to the Conference Room.    See you Sunday.

Hey guys, my new novel comes out on Tuesday. Here's the skinny…

PATIENT ZERO by Jonathan Maberry (St. Martins Griffin; trade
paperback)

DESCRIPTION:

When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week there's
either something wrong with your world or something wrong with your
skills... and there's nothing wrong with Joe Ledger's skills. And
that's both a good, and a bad thing. It's good because he's a
Baltimore detective that has just been secretly recruited by the
government to lead a new taskforce created to deal with the problems
that Homeland Security can't handle. This rapid response group is
called the Department of Military Sciences or the DMS for short. It's
bad because his first mission is to help stop a group of terrorists
from releasing a dreadful bio-weapon that can turn ordinary people
into zombies. The fate of the world hangs in the balance....

REVIEWS:

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY: "Plenty of man-to-zombie combat, a team traitor
and a doomsday scenario add up to a fast and furious read.

KIRKUS: "The book is as fun and funny as it is chilling and thrill-
packed. Joe is a fantastic character, full of compassion, real
vulnerabilities and a deliciously dark sense of humor."

COVER QUOTES:

"I had a fine old time reading PATIENT ZERO. Jonathan Maberry has
found a delightful voice for this adventure of Joe Ledger and his
crew: while the action is heated, violent, and furious, the writing
remains cool, steady, and low-key, framing all the wildness and
exuberance in a calm rationality (given an almost comic edge) that
renders it as palatable as your favorite flavor of ice cream. This is
a lovely feat, and Maberry has written a memorable book." - PETER
STRAUB

"A fast-paced, creepy thriller that as prickly as a hospital needle
and sounds a little too convincing. This guy is good." –JOE R.
LANSDALE

"Brilliant, shocking, horrifying, it puts the terror back in
terrorist." – JAMES ROLLINS, New York Times bestselling author of The
Judas Strain

"PATIENT ZERO is a first-rate thriller with a bioterror angle that is
as horrific as it is plausible. Maberry's prose sears, his dialog
cuts like a knife, and his characters crackle with life. Joe Ledger
rules."–DOUGLAS PRESTON, co-author of The Wheel of Darkness and The
Book of the Dead A dark, chilling and funny thriller about zombies

"Patient Zero is high-octane excitement from beginning to end, and
the start of a fabulous new series. Joe Ledger and the DMS have my
vote as the team to beat when combating terrorist threats on a grand
scale." - DAVID MORRELL, New York Times bestselling author of FIRST
BLOOD and CREEPERS

"Scary, creepy, and gripping--PATIENT ZERO is 'Night of the Living
Dead' meets Michael Crichton."--JOSEPH FINDER, New York Times
bestselling author of Power Play

"Brutal action, insanely intelligent, and so real that the hair on
the back of your neck stands up!" -- L.A. BANKS, The Vampire Huntress
Legends Series, New York Times Best-selling Author

My first comic for Marvel hits stores today:  WOLVERINE: THE ANNIVERSARY features two stories --a kick-ass lead story by William Harms, and my 8-page backup.

My piece is a surreal tale called GHOSTS, with mind-blowing art by Tomm Coker.

Here's a link to an interview with Harms and Me: http://tinyurl.com/d4pw6h

Next up: Punisher: Naked Kill (June 3).  And lots more after that!

I'm looking forward to hearing what you guys think of my first outing.  It's a whole new ballgame for me.
