Hello everyone,

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to consult bmd
records on line for South Australia.  I am looking for
marriage of William JOHNSTON and Ellen or Helen MATHER
which took place sometime in 1897/98.
I'm also looking for death of William Johnston but I
have no idea of the date.

date !!!!
Many thanks Aileen, that is wonderful.  You just don't
know how long I have been looking for this info.

William & Helen married in South Australia - I think
probably they lived there too, as her parents were
also there.  Their son was born in Stirling.
However Helen's death cert in 1958 says she was living
with her son in NSW then - so perhaps she moved there
once she was a widow to be closer to her son who was
in Bathurst.  William Johnston was born in 1860 and
was 13 years older than his wife - so I don't know if
it is easy to find his death - his father was another
William Johnston, and his mother Mary Falconer ....
but I suppose it is wishful thinking to expect to find
his death .......

  I can't believe how kind everyone is with help.  If I
can be of any assistance to anyone researching in
Europe, ie. Ireland England France ....

Hi Everyone

Does anyone have any information on the family and/or descendants of
Douglas Hope Johnston?

He is the son of Percival Johnston (grandson of Lt Col George Johnston
via Robert Johnston). He was born in Wellington NZ in 1874.

I'm pretty sure this is the connection to my family - but can't find
any information on him or his family other than what I already know :)

Any help would be appreciated :)

I have a Granduncle by that name b.1893, Collingwood/Northcote, VIC.
He was the 6th of 9 siblings, parents John Murray Johnston and Rosina
Matilda Creak.

What area are we looking at for Leslie? (state, country)
Roughly what year was Leslie born? Do you have any other information
that may help such as siblings or parents?

I can look up BDM's in Victoria up to 1920.
Also online BDM information is available for NSW, WA, and Queensland,
if
you now where to look.
Some military records are online.

Names include: The “Moolgewanke” was one vessel with a Johnston commander. Other names: Tom Johnstone and his brother Adam, from Port Seton, near Cockenzie, Scotland. Tom came to Australia as a Cadell volunteer on the “Lioness”; he returned to Scotland but came back with brig “Harry.” A George Johnston, Tom’s cousin, died in NZ in 1882, and his body was bought back and buried in Currency Creek cemetery near Goolwa. Tom Johnston died seven years later at Kallara, 184 miles above Willcannia, aboard the “Jolly Miller” which had been his vessel since 1868. A George Johnstone commanded the vessel “Albury.” A George Johnston also had the “Cadell” built as a barge in 1876, and two years later was fitted out as a steamer. Another known for his swimming ability was George Bain Johnston. By 1856 Johnston had saved many people from drowning that he was referred to by reporters as “The Murray River Spaniel” and received The Royal Humane Society. These extracts from “Riverboats” by Ian Mudie. This information sought by a descendant of Barclay families of Port Broughton, who also had early Murray River associations. I have just seen "Australian River Murray Boats History Genealogy"
listed on Ebay today - would that be of interest to you?  it is a book
called REDGUM AND PADDLE WHEELS by Peter J. Phillips,
Melbourne. 1980. Greenhouse., 1980. 1st Ed., with a foreword by Bill
Peach. 167 PP with b/w illustrations (sketch-plans, engravings,
photos). Eps: Map of the Murray-Darling River System. Cloth cover, dj.
Spine of dust jacket sunned. o/wise near fine. 28 x 22.

The thriving transport industry between 1850 & 1890 on the Murray,
Darling & Murrumbidgee Rivers when over 300 paddle-steamers plied them.

Thomas Johnston born 1854 at Lochinvar NSW parents John Johnston and
Margaret McArdil.  Are Thomas & John somehow related to Major George
Johnston of Dumfrieshire Scotland who was a marine on First Fleet?
Family story suggests this, but no proof.  Family say Johnston Street
Annandale NSW is named after a soldier relative. (It was named after
George Johnston.)  Any leads??

second name, and if only ours had too, it'd make it a little easire to
research eh? The Annandlae mention might be easiery to research,
backwards, that is. Have you tried the Johnston Clan of Australia for

Welcome Melanie.   I hope you find some connection
   with your Johnstons through the Group.   Mine came from Antrim,
   Northern Ireland, and before that we haven't managed to trace yet.

   Not an easy name to track because it is fairly common, especially
   when bunched together with the Johnsons and Johnstones.

   Have you read the book THE GENTLE JOHNSTON/ES by Russell Honey?  I
   found it a very good read, lots of background information.
