Hello everyone,
Thank you for including me in this group. I have
Johnstons on both sides of my family - there is no
connection between the two !
So I am Irish, married to a Frenchman and living in
France although I go to Ireland regularly to see the
family.
My father's mother's maiden name was Johnston and it
was these ancestors who emigrated to NZ in the 1850s.
William Johnston, a solicitor (my great x 2
grandfather's brother) in Temuka, Otago. To cut a
long story short, I am looking for his son, another
William ;

William JOHNSTON born on 16th August 1860 in Kuri
Bush, Otago. He probably married Ellen Sophia MATHER.
The 1893 Taieri electoral roll has an entry for Ellen
Mather of Mosgiel, domestic duties. They had one son.

Graydon Mather JOHNSTON, born 5th November 1898. He
was enrolled in St Helier’s School in Auckland between
October 1905 and February 1907 when the family went to
Australia. Graydon married Mollie WILLANS in 1933, in
Chatswood, NSW. He died in 1967 and Mollie in 1969.
They are both buried in Bathurst, NSW.

I lose track of William & family as from 1907 when
they went to Australia - I don't know where they went
... until 1933 when son Graydon married in Chatswood
etc etc (see above)
I have looked in NSW, Victoria and can't find death of
William & his wife.
The NSW birth records on line are not up to date
enough to give me names of Graydon & Mollie's children
- I would really love to find a descendant still
living !!!!

If I can be of any help to anyone at this end, it
would be with pleasure. BMD records in England and I
can also do some research on my trips to Ireland.

All the best, Liz

Thank you so much.... you have found out so much more information than I could have hoped for.

I never knew Isabella's last name or anything about her. We had her studio portrait at home. Her husband - my great grandfather - according to family folk lore was a philanderer!

There's a mystery about the whole family because on the shipping records the name was changed from  Church register name Munro to Johnston.

You may be able to solve this mystery - all we know about my great grandfather  is his date of birth - and there are 2 different months but the year is the same- and his date of death... but I don't know where he died.

David Johnston born Scotland - either 14/ 7/1854 OR 14/4/1854.... died 9/10/1906....

That's interesting about Isabella's place of death because my grandparents David [ her eldest child] and Elizabeth Johnston were living at Plant Street Northcote at the time. I do not know where her other children Frank and Helen were living at the time.

Of course, discovering that I have Irish blood is  ironic because I have always been quite definite in my protestations that there wasn't a drop of Irish blood in my veins. I was proudly English, Scots and German.

Thank you so much for the time you have spent filling in the gaps  for me.

Jeannie Johnston.

Hello Jeannie,
sorry but not much luck this time.

Checking my death index list between 1902 - 1913 for David JOHNSON/JOHNSTON/JOHNSTONE. I see thirteen recorded deaths.

When I check the same list with those with the fathers given name as David it then narrows down to just three.

None of these in died in 1906.

Jeannie,
I just simply cannot find a match for this one and admit defeat.
He has slipped under the radar.

  • Possibly never recorded.
  • Translated incorrectly.
  • Died interstate or overseas.
  • Recorded under a different name.

sorry I could not help but persistence will eventually get a result.

By any chance do you have the name of the mother of the David in question?

Feel free to make other enquiries

cheers
Tony Johnston

Tony

Jeannie,
I just simply cannot find a match for this one and admit defeat.
He has slipped under the radar.

  • Possibly never recorded.
  • Translated incorrectly.
  • Died interstate or overseas.
  • Recorded under a different name.

sorry I could not help but persistence will eventually get a result.

Hi again all,
I ordered Graydon Mather Johnston's death cert dated
1967 in Bathurst. It says that Graydon was born in
Stirling West, South Australia (1898). As I said in
my first message, he was then in a school in Auckland
before the family returned to Australia in 1907.
Perhaps they came back to Stirling West ...
Graydon & his wife Mollie nee Willans had one son,
William W. Johnston, born about 1936.
Perhaps he is still in Bathurst ... at the time the
family were living at 18 Blandford St.
Has anyone got access to records in South Australia to
see if Graydon's parents, William and Ellen are buried
there...
Or indeed to marriage records in NSW after 1960, to
see perhaps if William W. Johnston married ...

Many thanks for any help at all !!!

Hello Elizabeth,
I know you are asking specific questions about William JOHNSTON, but I did a quick search on RootsWeb.com and I did find a researcher that mentions Graydon JOHNSTON. This researcher is really researching the Mollie WILLANS side of the family.
If you have not seen it before, the information may be handy for future research.
www.worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi

Have you also visited the following link on the MATURIN and JOHNSTON families? Once again Graydon JOHNSTON and Mollie WILLANS is mentioned.
www.maturin..org.uk/index.html

Just for your future use this following link to Australian Cemeteries may be of assistance.
www.ozgenonline.com/aust_cemeteries/

I am visiting the library this week in Darwin so I will see if they have a disc on the information that you ask for. Lets keep our fingers crossed as most information of this type for public access  does not normally go beyond 1920.

good luck
cheers
Tony Johnston.

Hi there Tony,
thank you very much for your help. The
Maturin/Johnston connection is Me !!!!! With a few
distant cousins in England Ireland and Wales and one
in Australia !
I'll look at the Rootswebb too.
Someone called Joan gave me William's wife's death in
Chatswood NSW and then her birth in Karcultaby South
Wales. I think the Mathers must definitely have been
from South Wales.
I just have to find Williams death - probably in South
Wales somewhere as his wife probably went to NSW to be
close to son Graydon after that ...

We were in Darwin a couple of years ago, when visiting
one of our sons who was working in Sydney for six
months. We really enjoyed our trip "down under"

Many thanks for everything
Liz

G’day All:

As 2007 is coming to an end I’d like to wish all of you and those who are close the very best of wishes for 2008, whatever your ancestral search may be I wish for you that 2008 is the year for surprises and answers. I’d like especially to thank Les, the New Zealand Commissioner for Clan Johnston/e for his stalwart support and work from the other side of the ditch – Thanks Les !!

As an aside, and an example of networking and common interest one of our Group from Canada will be visiting Tasmania, Melbourne, Sydney and Nth Qld in February, Brenda’s brother’s DNA illustrates a close match to mine, and by default to our wonderful Gillian’s in South AU. The match is reasonably definite however the timeline is pretty big, we need to work on that. Brenda and her husband David are in Melbourne for only one day in Feb 08 and we will be making sure they’ll be made temporary Australian’s during their visit.

Just as a matter of interest has any or many of our Group gone down the DNA road? I took the upper limits of the test [in markers] and although the results are quite obviously compared to others, and it needs to be understood that the comparison is only to those who choose to have their results compared, and, to only those who have chosen to have their DNA tested, it can be enlightening. At this moment in time I have found absolutely at least three matches, no question, BUT and simply, they are related to me and Gillian in the last 1600 years or so, the DNA testing is proof but we need to ascertain collaborative documentation to complete the DNA testing.

Best Wishes

Don in Melbourne AU

Hi Kim -
it is good to hear from you and that you have such an
illustrious ancestor. My brother Donald Johnston always liked to
impress people by saying it was a Johnston who was the first person to
land in Australia (from the First Fleet) - actuallyYOUR ancestor!

If they were in NSW, try

I have had great success there finding NSW relatives.

If in Victoria

Both sites allow you to get them online (if you pay, of course!)

Thanks Gillian :)

Unfortunately the one I can't find anywhere (Albert George Johnston), I think was born in New Zealand - hes my grand father on my dads side - but he seems non-existent! I have added a lot of people to my tree from the Australian side in the past couple of days - but alas NONE of them migrated to New Zealand - its so frustrating LOL!

I know we definitely came from George Johnston - the first to step foot on Australian soil **grin** because the prisoners made an ebony and ivory walking stick for him in thanks for his kind treatment of them, and its been passed down from son to son since then - its ended up with my brother - but WHICH son in each family it was passed to who knows! LOL!

My uncle in New Zealand did our complete family tree right back to Princess Diannas Grandfather who got the spencer title when his older brother abdicated - she's my 42nd cousin LOL! Alas my uncle died though and we have no idea where all that information has been passed to **sigh**

Can I state again that I'm really frustrated? LOL!

How are you doing with your tree? Perhaps it connects into mine somewhere :)

Kim :)

Oh you're a darling :) Any help would really be appreciated :)

I have discovered many more Johnstons that are tied to George, but alas on each and every branch I've hit a dead end. It seems the one that left Australia for New Zealand is completely non-existent :)

I have been placing all of the information in a family tree maker that I "found". I'm going to see if any of it can be exported in any reasonable fashion and upload it if I can :) Perhaps it will help someone else also :)

Looking forward to hearing from you :)

Cheers!

Kim :)

Hi my maiden name is Kim Johnston.

I've joined this group hoping that someone can help me connect the
dots of my ancestry - or at least point me in the right direction? :)
Any help would really be appreciated.

I know that my Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather was George
Johnston who came over on the First Fleet, and I've discovered the
next generation down - but then I've lost 2 generations from them down
to my grandparents :(

This is what I have so far....

Hi All. Its been a while since I was on as I hit the brick wall and
went onto another branch, but now I'm still looking for my
grandfather's brothers. Lewis Jack Johnston 1862 - 1903, James Jack
Johnston 1866 - ? and Alexander Jack Johnston 1871 - ?. All were
born at Cockatoo Reef, near Rushworth, Victoria. Any info will be
gratfully received Thanks Val
