Good evening everyone.

Wishing you all a pleasant evening (or morning, daytime etc depending on
where you are in the world).

We would like to make mention, for those of you undertaking New Zealand
research who are not already aware of this site, the pages put together by
Gavin Petrie. As early New Zealand researchers we appreciate these pages
more than we can say and Gavin has done an excellent job in compiling
information on the thousands of shipping arrivals at New Zealand ports
between c1840 and 1900 (with a little bit either way). If you have a query
about a ship we would suggest that the first place to look is "Ships to New
Zealand" which you will find at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~shipstonz/shipstonz.htm Many of
Gavin's entries have links to other sites where the passenger lists are kept
but not only has Gavin collected all this "arrival" information for his site
he has taken steps to provide some of his own passenger lists.

Thanks Gavin. You have done a great thing for New Zealand researchers.

It traces the beginnings of the migrations from Europe to Britain - The
Vikings to the West Coast, the Scotii to Scotland, and the Celtic
people moving north under the nasty treatment of the Normans, then on
to the Border families and the first of the Johnston name. Later
with the problems of Maxwells being unkind to the Johnstons, and vice
versa, James VI/I sorted them out by encouraging them to settle in
Ulster - the Plantation. Next chapters are ULSTER THE
BEGINNING, ULSTER PRIOR TO THE PLANTATION, JOHNSTONS DEPART
THE BORDER AND ARRIVE IN ULSTER, etc. I did think it would be a dry
read, but it is very readbale and enjoyable, and also fills in the
bits about WHY the Plantation came about - and why people went to
Ulster.

The price was $38.50 - email Des at valdes@...

Have just joined the group and am seeking help please. I am trying to
get intouch with a family who lived in Greenbushes, W.A. All I know
is that the sister of my grandfather met & married an Australian
soldier(?) sometime after W.W.I and settled in Greenbushes. Her
maiden name was CHALLENGER she was from South Wales, his I believe was
JOHNSTONE, there were 2 sons and 1 daughter.

As you can see we're not exactly a close family - it's only been 70
odd years since the last communication I think - but I know there was
some contact between their emigration and WWII. If anyone knows of a
family who may fit the bill could they please contact me? Very many
thanks in anticipation.

Greenbushes is near Busselton in West Australia.

If you contact busgen@... they should be able to give you
   more local help.

They do have a J.W. Johnston on their World War 1 War memorial,
though he was killed in the War. He may have been related to your
   Johnston,
   best wishes, Gillian (Adelaide SA)

Hi there
I am trying to find information on my GGrandfather Robert Johnstone
who according to his death certificate was bor in Dundee Scotland in
1830. His father's name was William and his mother's Ann Henry. He
came to Australia to Sydney at the age of 19 in 1849 but I so far have
not been able to locate the name of the ship. I do know that he had a
boot and shoe factory in Sydney. He married Sophia Bailey in 1873 at
Kiama New South Wales and they had five children four boys and one

with some information on him.

Thanks Kevin,
I have found many of the Johnstone/s around Hobart, but I cannot find a link either.
What would probably help me is to find exactly where William JOHNSTONE was born and a corosponding shipping record.
Then the Scotland Census may reveal more.
cheers mate and thanks

I also have Johnstons in Tasmania.  John Johnston b. 1810 in Scotland.  John Johnston and Jane Johnston were passengers aboard the barque Lochiel.  They arrived at the Port of Hobart 18 September 1833.  The Lochiel left Leith in Scotland 13 April 1833.  John Johnston's occupation was that of a carpenter.

Another John Johnston ...... to John Alexander Johnston b 1863 Campbelltown, Tasmania ....... but none that match your names Tony.

Lorna, could you please provide the URL to the JohnstonAustralia Web Page.

Thanks Kevin

G'day all,
I have recently decided to rectify my lacking of knowledge of my
family roots for the benifet of my children.
I have little knowledge of the JOHNSTON(E) side of the family, this
due to my mothers divorce from when I was young.
My scrounging has unearthed a bit from the LDS site, but I feel there
is more I can unearth.
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can steer me in my quest.
From what I can gather, my JOHNSTONE side come from Midlothian area
of SCOTLAND.
I have listed below the basics of my search starting from myself.
The birth & death dates shown are only applicable to the male side.

Thanks Lorna & Brian,
I have been trying all avenues to see if the JOHNSTON/S of Hobart tie in with the JOHNSTON/S I am chasing.
I would not be surprised if they are, but if this is the case I suspect that it would be in Scotland somewhere.
The most frustrating thing I find with family research on the internet is the time wasted going to sites that do all the promising of helping, but when you get there it's Pay up.
But then again, persistence prevails in the many sites that are a real assistance. It's really a matter of trying to tie it all in.
thanks again
cheers
Tony JOHNSTON

Hi Kevin
I meant the Yahoo group site through which you have just posted your message. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JohnstonAustralia/  If you are a member you can view the Files section.
I have John Johnston who was a coach builder in Hobart.  His wife was Maria Maher.  There are obviously too many of that name!

Hi all,

Have traced back my Aust ancestry to Robert Johnston and Catherine
(Dowey) Johnston of Romsey, Victoria. They arrived from Belfast in
around 1865 and had 11 surviving children, one of whom was my great
grandfather Charles Johnston in 1876. Other names available.

Just a quick check to see if anyone out there has any ties or
connections with my lot :)

Hi All

I just want to remind everyone about the 'Files' section on the Johnston Group webpage. Here you will find the Johnston Australia Database, an Excel file with 92 Johnstons who arrived in Australia and New Zealand. It hasn't been updated recently but you never know your luck.

Happy hunting!

Hi
When i first come across my Johnston's while researching my family tree
it was a wife of my 3x Great Granfather, Alfred J Carlton. Her name was
Fanny Louise Dudley Johnston. She was born in 1871 in Emerald Hill. Her
parents were Charles George Johnston and Ellen Jane Jones. Charles was
born in Cumberland, England. His father was George William Johnston who
was born about 1801, Dumfries, Scotland. Charles mother was Jane
Jobson, who was born about 1796, Cumberland. This is as far back as i
have got so far. There were alot of siblings of Fanny's, and Charles
also had a few. If anyone is linked to any of these families i would
love to hear from you, I am very keen to share my research with you!
Cheers, Cat.

Hi

I am researching my husbands family tree and history for our children
and would love to hear from anyone who can help. William Joseph
Johnston migrated from Auchinleck Scotland in 1858 and met and married
Ann Mungovan from County Clare Ireland and settled in the Wallan
area. They had 11 children David, Ellen, Elizabeth, Thomas, John,
Maryann, Louisa, Richard, Robert and Daniel. Before migrating William
had 8 children but have been unable to find out anything about them.
My husband is a direct descendant of Daniel
