My great-great grandmother was Janet Johnstone. All records I can find of her have an "e" on her surname. This includes a "permission slip" from her mother to get married. I have this in my possession and I believe it to be an original.
Janet was born in Auchterderran, Fife, Scotland, on 28th April, 1856.
She had at least one sibling, a sister, Mary, who was born the
same place on 23rd June, 1854.

Their father was Robert Johnstone. I have found records with his name both with an "e" and without it.
I do not know when Robert was born but he was married to Cecilia Methven on 13th (or 19th) Nov, 1852 in Scoonie, Fife, Scotland.

At some stage before 1874, Janet came to Australia because she married William Henry Ogle in Newcastle in 1874. This makes her 18. The permission slip from her mother said she was over 21, so either her mother lied for her or something is wrong??

I hope that someone can use this information or help me to find some more information!

Hi Everyone

I have now updated the spreadsheet for messages received up to 9th June
2005. Sorry for the delay in updating.

Look in the 'Files' section on the Group page.

If you are new to the list please read the file information below.

Lorna.

____________________________________________________________________
ABOUT THE DATABASE.

The file contains information taken from emails to date. The
database is an Excel file.

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE CHANGES TO THE FILE ON THE WEBPAGE. Instead of
opening the file, save it to your computer when prompted, and then
open from there and use as you wish . Send all changes in written
form to the group or to Lorna at snag@....

In order to allow you to sort the file I was unable to add a header
row. Therefore notes are in the form of a footer. Read the footer
by either printing the file or clicking on 'print preview'.

I have only included information on persons arrived or born in
Australasia. Any other relevant information is in the Relationship'
column. (e.g.Son 4 indicates he was the son of the person at number
4 )

For those unfamiliar with Excel, instructions to sort the file are:
1. Firstly click on the column you wish to sort by.
2. Click on the DATA menu. This will bring up a box.
3. Choose your sorting criteria.
4. Click 'Header Row'
5. Click 'OK'.

I have sorted by 'firstname' but you might find it useful to sort
by 'ship' or 'birthplace'. To place in families do a sort
by 'no.', they will then be displayed in the order in which I have
entered them. Remember, any sorting should be done after you have
saved the file to your computer.

If I have made any errors, or you would like any changes, please let
me know.

Please contact me if you have any problems.

Lorna.

Hello again everyone

I apologise to all the faithful who read the Johnston Australasia
Spreadsheet. My updates over the last few months have been rare and I have
decided that I can no longer continue as custodian of the file.

Since I have gone back to working fulltime I have had little spare time
available and my genealogy has become a rare hobby for me.

The task is worthy of more than I can give and I hope you are able to find a
volunteer who can put more time to it than I can.

Keep hunting!
Regards
Lorna

G’day all thought it an appropriate time to update the Group on some great Networking news.

Des Johnstone the Commissioner of the Clan Johnston/e in Australia called me recently [Whilst I was slipping into a latte on the Gold Coast on an 8 day break and where I’d caught the flu on arrival at Coolangatta – Truly ! – LOL!].  Anyway Des spoke for a little while and as the previous Editor for the Clan [Ruth I know you’re out there and I hope the healing is going ahead in leaps and bounds] offered me the vacant position as Editor, my lovely bride Dianne [My Bride of many years !] was with me, overheard the conversation- as any wife would, looked me in the eyes and raised her eyebrows in a gesture of “NO” but being a bloke with a Johnston surname, well, I mean….

Yep, so this bloke is a chuffed Editor of the Clan Johnston/e in Australia, now I can see that as only confirmation that Genealogy Networking really works, this Group was created freely for anyone to join and share [I mean if your surname is Smith you’d have to ask a question eh] and both Gillian and my philosophy has always been to be transparent and to share freely, I mean, why not eh, the more you share the more chances of not only a “Hit” but of learning more, genealogically, culturally, or whatever.

But there’s more and here’s the Spiel, the “Word” if you like.

I do understand that many in this wondrous Group are already members of the Clan Johnston/e in Australia, so just ignore my waffle.

Listen to this ! – For $20.00, Twenty Australian Dollars, you become a Member of Clan Johnston/e in Australia, ironically probably the most active of any Johnston/e Internet based Clan, worldwide.  Now that @AU20.00 is as cheap as the 12 [2 six packs of the wondrous Coopers Stout Stubbies I slipped into this week]

But there’s more, for that you get posted to your home mailbox [only caus Australia Post won’t deliver it into your hand] 4 [four] time a year a Clan Johnston/e Newsletter, up to 30 pages of reading of Johnston/e stuff].  Then you also will be exposed to the ability of, if you want, buying some special Johnston/e memorabila too.  [I’ve just bought 3 Caps to give to my 29+ year old kiddies – LOL!!]

I can hear you saying “Gee He’s on a sell mission” – You bet cause I’m writing up the Newsletter, Gillian [She’s offered and I’ll take her up on that] is inputting too, the next issue can be delivered to your home in September, and I know what’s in it!

In all seriousness though, and for the amount, and it does include news items from our kindred people in New Zealand too, it is a token payment, a really small investment for a special belonging feeling.

Now, here’s the catch, if you get a feel of “Belonging” I’d more than welcome your written input to the Magazine”, Lorna has done such a sensational job of keeping our Database up to date and I’m lamenting that work is a priority [Don’t we all….]

By the way the Clan also has a Database too, Des has developed it over many years and it’s no cost to input too, take advantage of it!  Lastly there is no other cost, no hidden costs, nothing at all but I must be honest I am trying to convince the Clan tat costs must increase, I’d like to see a cheap, a real cheap cost of say $30.00 per year, per 52 weeks, and colour can be put into the Clan Magazine.

That’s the Spiel, I’ve uploaded the Clan Johnston/e Application Form into our File area, or, if it’s easier just email me “Off-List” and I can end it as an attachment.

Lastly I do encourage anyone to consider joining, I personally can’t believe how chap it is!

Best Wishes

Don in Melbourne AU

Hello

An email arrived the other morning advising me (and others)
about this Group. I immediately applied to join as I have a
Great Grandmother with the Surname Johnston. One John Madill
arrived in Victoria sometime between his birth in Parish Drum,
Monaghan Ireland in 1835 and June 11 1863 when he married Eleanor
Johnston in the Registry Office, Geelong, Victoria.

I have other details but presently all my belongings are packed
in cartons as tomorrow I am shifting to a new residence.

I hope that there is someone out there who has information to
share.

Regards

Warren Harding

IRISH LOCAL NAMES EXPLAINED - Vocabulary of Irish Root Words

By P. W. JOYCE, LL.D., M.R.I.A.

This volume is a key that will help to open many locks. It contains a vocabulary of the root words from which Irish place names are most generally formed. It also contains a considerable selection of those names that are best known through the country, and which best exemplify the use of the root words. By the aid of the roots and examples it will be easy to discover the proper forms and meanings of hundreds of place names not mentioned in the following pages. Now that an active interest is being taken in the native and correct forms of our place names, this little book cannot fail to be of practical use. Should more exhaustive information on the subject be desired, it will be found in The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places by the same author.

G’day Pam, I like the new email address, “Nationality Assertiveness” ?  LOL !

There’s nothing like home, hopefully you’re changing weather patterns and not locating to Far Nth Qld, after 2 years with Georgia weather a break would be good.

We hope the sad events with Katrina have had no affect.

Good morning listers....i is just sooooo good to be back in oz:
amazing - a prolonged stay away, enables us to see everything
fresh...

Now, getting back to much more serious matters

On the marriage certificate 1856 Castlemaine, Victorian Registration
#652 of Jesse HOLMES and Agnes JOHNSTON born abt 1831, London, her
father Andrew JOHNSTON is listed as a gardener, her mother Mary Ann
ONGLEY [previously thought to be LONGLEY

On the 1861 UK Census, we have an Andrew JOHNSTON aged 65, born abt
1796 in Scotland - gardener; married to Mary Ann, aged 53, born
about 1808 in Blenchey, Kent, England, with two children: John born
about 1836, and Elizabeth born about 1839 - in Marylebone, England.
Hunting in the 1871 UK Census, I think that both Andrew and Mary Ann
may de deceased.

every little bit helps methinks !
Best wishes...
Pamela

Welcome Home Pam, having just arrived back home after a week of
working in Tasmania. I didn't [and it was a hard thing to do :)]
access my emails whilst there and came back to a few hundred emails.
Good to have you back on Aussie soil given the unfolding tragedies and
disasters in the US
Best Wishes

FYI----:

Exciting news: the NSW BDM site at http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ has
extended their searches to include Marriages to 1954 and deaths to 1974.
Unfortunately the births remain to 1905. Hopefully they will give thought
to extending this by a few extra years too.

Congratulations to Don in Melbourne for a very mighty effort on his
first issue as Editor of the Clan Johnston's newsletter - through it
should be called 'book'.

I really enjoyed reading right though it, lots of information clearly
set out and all of it informative and of interest. It is the sort
of 'newsletter' that can be kept as a resource for future use as well.

My only suggestion - perhaps an index to find relevent articles -
especially if you are going to keep up this standard!

well done, Don

Gillian

The Border Men . . .

A poem from WW1 days from Berwick

Sons of the Border. Where are they ?

The South of Scotland’s men.

That bore the weight of Scotland’s wars –

Stand they now as then ?

Mosstrooper, Border reiver race,

That plied the axe and spear.

How often did their foeman learn

The war-note, “Jethart’s here !”

Not once, nor twice, by Coldstream’s ford

No mean marauding band,

But England’s hosts have plashed through Tweed

To gain the Northern strand.

Tonight on Berwick’s ancient walls

The fiery beacons glow,

The borderers are up and armed

Against as fierce a foe.

From castle, cot and farm they come

From silver Solway’s side,

The yeoman from the farthest rhynns

Of Galloway sae wide.

As Gala, Ettrick, Teviot rush

In spate to swell the Tweed,

So each old town sends out its sons

In this country’s need.

The Johnstone’s, Maxwells, Scotts and Kerrs,

And every border Clan;

The Douglas’. Armstrongs, Elliots, Humes,

Are out to their last man.

Mid Britain’s battled host they stand,

In all the rut of war;

The Borderers are at the front,

The men to do and daur.
