The John Neilson Institution was opened on 5th April 1852. The school, affectionally known as "the dome" or "the porridge bowl" is a well known Paisley identity and is readily recognisable from all parts of the town. In the middle part of the 20th century it was one of the three non catholic senior secondary schools in Paisley, the others are the late lamented Camphill and the still existing Paisley Grammar. After a review of school education in Scotland, the John Neilson Institution (JNI) became a High School in 1967 (JN HS) . The JN HS remained at the "old dome" until 1968 when the school moved to Ferguslie. The JN HS remained open until 1989 when it merged with the Castlehead High School, built on the former Camphill site, and the John Neilson name was lost as far as education in Paisley was concerned. The name, however, remains as "the dome" became flats. This chat site is to link FPs, former teachers, and friends of the school to perhaps remind them of the times they attended and refresh well worn memories and perhaps regain lost, or make new friendships.
