I still want that book about Kedainiai. I started studying Hebrew, so I'd like the full book instead of just english part.
Thanks!

Many thanks for the information. It seems that the name you have found is my grandfather whom I am named after. If you can get me more information it will be great.
Where did you find the information?Did they have a telephone?how many people lived in Kedainiai at the 1930?Is the original house still there or everything in Kedainai new?
I am going to scan the book so I'll have a copy for you. Most of it is in hebrew but if you need some details I can try and translate these details for you to english.
Keep well and hope to hear from you soon,

Dear David,
My name is Milda Jakulyte-Vasil, I'm an historian and am currently doing research on Jewish Kedainiai. Kedainiai is my hometown, but I'm a Lithuanian. In your message, you said you were looking for information about your family. I saw two surnames in the Lithuanian who's who directory which may help. In 1923, Glešteinas (Gleshteinas) Dovydas, of the address Didžioji street No 40, employed in manufacturing and merchandizing. In 1931 Glašteinas (Glashteinas) Z., of address Gedimino street No 42, of the same occupation. This is now one and the same street, and it seems the numbering is probably the same. You mentioned you could make a copy of Keidan Memorial Book, for whoever might need one. I would find a copy tremendously useful. I would be very grateful to receive a copy, either a photocopy, or in digital format
via e-mail. Thank you in advance, Milda

Friends,
Last month Harvey Kaplan, a proud Keidaner descendent, traveled from
his home in Glasgow, Scotland, to Keidan, making his first visit to
the "alte heym". His description of what he saw, together with some
lovely photos, is now accessible to all of us.
Click over to the Jewish Keidan website -- www.keidan.net and follow
the link at the top of the home page. Or if you're impatient, click
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/acassel/keidan/kaplan
to go right to Harvey's page.
I think we have some relatively recent members, so let me take this
opportunity to welcome you all to our worldwide email list, and also
to wish all my Keidaner friends a shana tova -- a good, sweet and
healthy new year.
Best,
Andy Cassel
Hello Keidaners,
I've just started researching my family and was delighted to find your
wonderful website and this forum. I'm trying to trace the families of
my paternal grandparents, both of whom came from Keidan.
My grandfather was Harry Bluestone (originally Aron Blostein), born
ca. 1870, and his sister Mary. Their parents were Jesse / Alexander
Blostein and Frieda Leah (nee Krooker or Kruger).
My grandmother was Rahle Kanter, born c. 1870. Her father was Laza
Kanter (not sure of her mother's name), who settled in Keidan after
his marriage. Her brothers who also came to the US were Rudolph and
Philip Kanter.
Grateful for any help or suggestions!
Kind regards,
Barbara Bluestone
P.S. Your grandfather was listed as a member of the
New York Keidaner Association in 1930. (Weinsteins and
Leiberts were also members.)

Hi, my name is Josh Weinstein and I am not sure but I
may know of a connection to the Bluestone family. Both
of my paternal grandparents are from Keidan. In
particular my grandmother, Feige Eita Leibert, had a
distant relation by marriage to the Plotz family. In
turn, Issac Isreal Plotz had married Rose Bluestone of
Kalvaria. I obtained this information from Dick
Plotz, who is a grandson of Issac Isreal and Rose.(In
an amazing coincidence Dick's family is also related
by marriage to my mother's family.) Dick indicated
that he had information on his Bluestone family but I
don't know if they are related to your family. Dick
has been involved with JewishGen's study of Lithuania
and Andy may know how to contact him. Good luck in
your search.

I'm creating web pages for two towns close to Keidan:
- Zeimiai - Zheim/Zheimy in Yiddish (12 miles SE of Keidan)
- Jonava (18 miles SE of Keidan)
The mass grave site outside of Keidan was the site where the Jews of Keidan, Seta and Zeimiai were murdered on August 28, 1941.
I'm well aware of Ada Green's section about the mass grave site on her Seta web page, and she has already donated her photos for use in mine.
Does anyone have any photos of the Keidan mass grave site?
Have any of you visited Lithuania and perhaps also have branches in Jonava and have photos of that town?
Do any of you happen to have photos of the tiny village of Zeimiai (or the train station), which is along the way from Keidan to Jonava?
Below are the web pages I've done for the Polish side of my family.

Dear Ronald,

Regarding the Stung and Smit families, while I do not have any

birth records, and 13 SMIT records).
I am the Keidan coordinator for the LitvakSIG Vital Records Project.
We have already translated and distributed 31 years of Keidan birth
records. More are coming (there are 50 years in total), to be
followed by marriage, divorce and death records.

Dear Margery,
In my surname index to the Keidan birth records translated to date,
there are 5 Bernshteyn/Berinshteyn birth records and 69 Cohen/Kagan
birth records (Kagan=Cohen when transliterated from the Russian).
Clearly there was a very large Cohen family in Keidan, although I
cannot say that they were all necessarily from the same family.
Unfortunately my surname index is just that--surnames. For reasons
that are too complicated to explain here, I cannot include given
names in my index. I compiled this index so that people can ask me
if the surnames they are researching are represented. I cannot
search for given names also because there are already thousands of
translated birth records in my database and these are not in
alphabetical order. The records are in chronological order and are
grouped by year.
If you want to know more about the LitvakSIG Vital Records Project,
please go to the webpage below:
http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeol99x/
If you wish to become a member of the Keidan VRI group by making a
contribution, you can find these details on the website, or you can
write to me at ozabludoff@...
A $100 donation entitles you to receive all the translated records
to date as well as all those that will be translated in the future--
about 18,000 Keidan records in total (birth, marriage, divorce,
death). A lesser contribution is greatly appreciated since it
furthers the translation effort. All the translated records will be
posted on the LitvakSIG All Lithuania Database hosted by JewishGen
http://www.jewishgen.org
But there is a delay of about one year from the time the records are
completed until they are posted on the ALD.

their American names. They are both buried at the Keidan section of
the cemetery in New York.

Dear Professor Asherson,
As I indicated in an earlier post to this list, there are 28 Stung
and 13 Smidt/Smit birth records in the Keidan vital records
translated to date. Most of these birth records are from the mid to
late 1800s. If you wish to learn more about the LitvakSIG Vital
Records Project, please visit the website below:
http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeol99x/
We have about 18,000 vital records from Keidan (birth, marriage,
divorce and death). We have already translated well over 3,5000
birth records, among these the Stung and Smidt births.
If I can help you further, please do not hesitate to contact me
either through this list or at ozabludoff@...

The only one I can think of is Barnett (Barney) Smith. He married my
Grandmother's sister. IDA. Ida's, and my Grandmother, Breina Taube's maiden
name was ZALMANOVICH (Americanized to SELMAN). The Smith's settled many
years ago in Spring Valley, New York, running a dry goods store. Curiously,
IDA's brother also opened a similar store, and there was quite a feud.
Happily, it did not extend to the children.
This is a "shot in the dark" - - - perhaps it can lead to further paths.
GERSON LEVY.

In my surname index to the Keidan birth records translated to date, there are 5 Bernshteyn/Berinshteyn birth records and 69 Cohen/Kagan birth records (Kagan=Cohen when transliterated from the Russian). Clearly there was a very large Cohen family in Keidan, although I cannot say that they were all necessarily from the same family.
