Shalom to our Keidaner Friends,
As each year, we are going to commemorate our families, murdered in Keidan on
August 28, 1941.
We'll meet on Sunday, 29.8.2010, at 17:45 at the same place - near the benches,
about 100 meters beyond the main entrance gate to the old cemetery of Holon.
From there we'll walk together to the Memorial dedicated to victims of Keidan.
Unfortunately, the majority of the first generation of survivors and founders of
our association are not with us any more and we have no addresses and/or phone
numbers of the second generation. Therefore we welcome each recipient of this
announcement to pass this information to people who may be interested to join us
and feel a part of the community.

With best regards,
Arie Shcherbakov
Secretary of the association

Shalom Arie

I am a first generation of a survivor from Keidan, my father who emigrated to South Africa prior to the Shoah. Thank you for letting me know about the memorial. Unfortunately we live in London and won’t be able to attend but will be in Shul on 28 August. My father’s whole family perished so I am so grateful to be told of the service on 29 August.

With gratitude

Kind regards

Dear Family -- A friend sent me this and I thought you might want to see it.  Love, Susanne.
The Only Surviving Album of Auschwitz

This is the story of a Hungarian Jewish woman who survived Auschwitz and found a coat belonging to a guard which she took to shield her from the cold immediately after her liberation.

In the pocket of this coat she found a photo album.  It contained pictures of what went on in this extermination camp.

Imagine her reaction when she saw a picture of herself coming off of the train as well pictures of her family who were already murdered.

This album at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem was donated by this woman in 1980 and will forever be displayed there.

When you have 5 minutes of peace and quiet in front of your computer, watch it and consider passing it around to people that you know so they can share it and know about it.

It is truly moving and important.

See link under.

I apologize for the delay in posting this. On Aug. 29, a commemoration of the mass murder in Keidan was held near Tel Aviv. The following account was sent by Aryeh Shcherbakov. Photos are uploaded separately:

Dear Andrew,

Attached you'll find photographs taken during our last commemoration meeting.

The memorial is dedicated to the victims of Keidan and of a few villages in its neighbourhood - Airiogola, Dotnuva, Kroki and Shat.

As I've written you, we're already quite a small group of those who generally come in the recent years - though I’ve expected at least 7 more Keidaners this time.

The participants this year (counting from the left to right) included:

Leon and Jenny Rubin (Jenny is of the Chesler family)
Nissan Krost
David Gladshtein
Avraham Upnitsky
Esther and Moshe Ginzburg
Arie (Lionya) Shcherbakov (of the Kagan family)
Simona Klein (of the Upnitsky family)
Tamar Dothan (of the Israelov family)

Warmest regards and Shana Tova to you and all your family,

Sorry for the late posting. There is a memorial service for Lithuanian Jews who perished in the Holocaust this Sunday October 31 at noon at the Fifth Avenue Synogogue. This is its 65th year of remembrance. I have never been, my mother had gone with my father on occasion so now that my father died several years ago (at the age of 94) I will attend with my mom. The sevice is not specific to Keidan of course but I will be carrying a small sign that says Keidan (perhaps with the family names of my relatives Shternfeld, Zilberas, Lurie among others). Just wanted to let people who might be in NYC to know about this. It is sponsored by a group called Assistance to Lithuanian Jewery (I believe that is the name, my mom has the invitation.)  Sharon Silber

Fellow Keidaners:

As some of you are aware, Aug. 29, 2011 will mark the 70th anniversary of the
mass murder that effectively put an end to the 500-year-old Jewish community of
Keidan.

As some of you also know, this date has been marked almost every year since 1941
by Keidaners and their descendents in Europe and Israel.

I recently met with Martin Kagan, one of our most distinguished landsleit and
himself a native of Keidan, whose family perished after he left in 1939. Now a
resident of Manhattan, Martin has suggested--and I heartily agree--that it would
be very appropriate to hold a similar memorial commemoration sometime next
August in New York City.

We would gather in the city to celebrate Keidan's history and remember the
hundreds who were martyred there. If there is sufficient interest and we can
raise the necessary funds, would also like to commission a stone memorial
marker, to be placed in an appropriate location such as the Keidaner burial plot
in Montefiore Cemetery in western Long Island.

While next August is 10 months away, planning for such a gathering needs to
begin soon. So I would like everyone who would be interested in attending to
raise a virtual hand; send an email to the JewishKeidan list indicating your
interest in attending and/or contributing.

It would likely be held mid-day, last no more than a couple of hours, with
perhaps some light refreshment afterward. I believe it could be a meaningful
occasion for everyone with a connection to the history community of Keidan.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Andy Cassel

I would hope to attend such a ceremony next August although I don't yet know my exact schedule.

The plot described by Josh Weinstein probably is at Old Montefiore Cemetery, the same Queens NY cemetery mentioned in Andy Cassel's note (below).  My grandparents and uncles and, probably, Mr. Cassel's ancestors helped organize the Keidaner Burial Plot there.

I hope I didn't create any confusion.  There is another Montefiore cemetery on Long Island but the Keidaner plot is at the 'old' location. Many Keidaners are not near New York, but I hope it is convenient enough for a decent turnout.

Just to clarify: Our idea is to hold a gathering somewhere convenient for those
traveling into New York, probably in Manhattan. The specific location is yet to
be determined. The first question is whether enough people would make time to
attend. If all who are interested would so indicate in the next couple of weeks,
we can decide whether to proceed with planning.

Please send an email either here or to me directly at acassel@..., and
also pass the word to anyone you know who's not on the list. Many thanks.

Dear Andy and Fellow Keidaners,

I too would be interested in attending the proposed ceremony to memorialize the
destruction of Keidan in 1941. I hope we can get enough interest to make this
happen in 2011. Martin Kagan has come up with similar good ideas in the past.
Let's act on this one!

To the Israelis among us,

Our meeting last August to commemorate the Keidan Jewish community took place in the Holon cemetary. It was a very hot day, as August always is. There was a suggestion to try to interest more people in coming next year, on the 70th anniversary of the destruction of the community, and hold the meeting somewhere inside. Let's keep the idea alive.

Hi Andy,

Much as I would hope to attend on 29 Aug. 2011 it is impossible as we live in London, UK. A further complicating factor is that my husband is suffering from severe arthritis which is debilitating. My father’s whole family was lost as were the families of all of us. Nonetheless I would be grateful if you keep me up to date on any further developments re: the memorial.

Dear Keidaners,
Some of you may already be familiar with the genealogical site Geni. I
was web browsing last week and to my complete surprise discovered the family
tree of my grandmother Feige Elle Lebetkin Weinstein at Geni. The tree was
developed a person completely unknown to me, Divon Mordichai Lan. It turns out
that Divon is a member of the Keidan Chessler family which was related to the
Lebetkins. I would definitely recommend this site for those doing family
searches. One value is that the site merges related family trees. In my case,
the Zagoviches, Chesslers and Zisles of Keidan were merged with the Lebetkins
(There were also members of the Veler and Lipshiz families in the tree.
I do have a few reservations. A fair amount of the information was not
new to me. In addition, some trees were quite incomplete compared to other
information that I had. Nevertheless I would encourage Keidaners to try Geni
out.

Re the discussion on Geni, there's also some pitfalls. Make sure your
family tree is saved somewhere safe on your computer and backed up.
By the time various people have grafted their family trees onto yours
on Geni, it will start to look unrecognisable and you don't know what
errors have crept in and how rigorous are there standards of evidence.
It's the old story of people trying to 'force in bits of the jigsaw'
- which has been happening for centuries (as people tried to prove
their 'yichus' or descent from famous people).

Also, although Geni is basically free, if it for example tells you
that it has found a match for someone in your tree in another tree, it
then wants you to upgrade to the fee version in order to see the
match.

Like everything else, pros and cons! But you still might make that
essential connection using this website.

I fully agree with Harvey. Some of the merged matches are a bit ridiculous.  I made up the following example but it is quite close to reality: I was only informed that my match was the the second cousin of the divorced wife of the great grandfather of my second cousin thrice removed.
