traced my family back to Keidan recently, all started with archive of meeting of Keidan Society in NYC in the 1930s or 40s and literate essay about Keidan as the "hole in the
heart" town> Always thought my roots were German, but Germany controled Lithuania
at the time my Great Grandfather immigrated around 1900. I am a new resident of Florida,
having had my family first settle in Brooklyn and the the Bronx, where i grew up. Family name is Shirk sometimes Sirk in research thru ancestry.com Its free and can get you back to the 1800s in Keidan, before may need help.

Hello Sharon and Group,

While normally I don't like to solicit on this site, I just want to tell Sharon
and remind the group of the existence of the Keidan Vital Records Translation
project. It is a LitvakSIG (Special Interest Group) project, and I am the
coordinator. We have translated more than 22,000 vital records--births,
marriages & divorces, and deaths--from Keidan, Dotnuva, Josvainiai and many
other shtetlach in the Keidan area. These are both 19th and 20th century
records. Indeed LIPNIK and ZELL are well represented in my database, as well as
SIRK (for Alan Shirk).

When one joins the Keidan Vital Records Translation project, he/she is sent all
of the records in beautifully organized Excel spreadsheets from which it is easy
to create family trees. IMPORTANT: all of the data is on your own computer; no
searches are necessary to extract records piecemeal. Membership in the Keidan
VRT project requires a $100 donation to LitvakSIG. The wealth of information
received is worth far more than the cost of membership.

If you are interested in learning more or in joining the group, please contact
me: ozabludoff at verizon.net

Maybe I'm late discovering this, but it's a lovely discovery nonetheless. The
New York Public Library has put the full text of the Keidan yizkor book on line.
It can be found here:

http://yizkor.nypl.org/index.php?id=1302

Scroll through the alphabetical listing of towns at the top of the page. Keidan
actually appears twice -- as "Keydan" and as Kedainiai.

Incidentally, I found this via Dovid Katz' interesting website
http://www.holocaustinthebaltics.com. Well worth checking out.

best to all

I was in Keidan wutrh my family two years ago. We went with Simon, the curator of Sugihara House in Kaunas. Simon is a native Lithuanian and very knowledgeable with pretty good English. He also escorted us around Kaunas, the Baltic and into Latvia.
He's thoughtful about expenses--even saved us some money in Riga when he realized we had been cited an "in-season" rate in a beautiful hotel but were entitled to the off-season rate.
Please write to howard.wolinsky@... if you have any questions or want to see my photos online taken in Lithuania.

Hi,
I've been there three times and it's really not necessary to take a guide.  It's right next to the main highway and you can easily fly Ryanair to Kaunas and rent a car and you are there.  There is an English language guidebook, Kedainiai in Your Pocket:
http://www.inyourpocket.com/lithuania/ke
where you can find out where to stay and where to eat and where the places of Jewish life and martyrdom are located as well as other more general places of interest.  There is a tourist office with a big "I" on it in the main square and English-language speaking people inside.  The last time I was there, I met tourists from Sweden and Finland and they were part of a large wave of tourists using Kedainiai as a rest stop.  It's not like the old days!

LIthuania isn't Belarus and so it isn't necessary to take a guide. On the other hand, if anybody can recommend a guide for individual travel to Belarus, I would be very interested in that recommendation.  I'm going to Mir, Nesvizh, Navahrudak, Dyatlova, Slonim, Lida and Hrodna this summer and I must get a guide.  Thanks!

No. It's a Russified (no 'h') spelling of "Kahan" or "Cohen"

No.  Kagan is actually a variant of Cohen.  In the Russian language, there is no "h" sound.  The name was probably written down in the Ukrainian or Belarusian spellings (which do have an "h" sound), and the letter representing the "h" sound in those languages instead represents the "g" sound in Russian.  Hence, Cohen --> Kahan --> Kagan.

You will note that my last name is Kadin. This name was established at the turn of the
last century, in New York City by my great Uncle Samuel W. Kadin.

The name evolved from Kedainiai, became Kaidan, from  where my family must have originated.
My father was born in the Mir, Russia a border village with a good Yeshivah on the Polish border
just a few Km from the Lithuanian line.

One of my dad's brothers attended the Mir Yeshivah and the other attended the Vilna Yeshivah.
As you may know, the entire area was once the domain of the Prussian Empire. Thus I speak
a yiddish similar to middle German, even though I was born in Canada.

If you already have not read THE JEWS of LITHUANIA, by Masha Greenbaum, published by
Gefen Publishing House Ltd. Jerusalem, Israel....I think you would find this of interest.

I hope this is of interest to you.

Dear Mr. Kagan

You wrote about Avraham-Eliahu Kaplan "His introduction to his planned commentary in Berliner "Jeshurun" is a deep, broad-reaching inquiry all by itself.
I have been searching a long time for a copy of that article in "jeshurun" . Can you help me in anyway?
My father, Rabbi Elie Munk, of Paris was a disciple of Rabbi Kaplan.
I was told that Rabbi Kaplan passed away on the week when that Jeshurun weekly issue came out, and that the 10 students who Rabbi Kaplan selected and agreed to help Rabbi Kaplan on his commentary (to replace Rashi) passed away that year. My father was selected but decided not to join.
Have you heard this story? and, how can it be verified?
Thank you
Max Munk

Max,

Berl Kagan is long gone, alas. I found a reference to his passing on a 1993
edition of the Mendele email listserv. If you're searching his works I would
suggest you query YIVO, where he worked as a researcher in the 1960s. Best of
luck.

Shalom to our Keidaner Friends,
As each year, we are going to commemorate our families, murdered in Keidan on
August 28, 1941.
We'll meet on Sunday, 29.8.2010, at 17:45 at the same place - near the benches,
about 100 meters beyond the main entrance gate to the old cemetery of Holon.
From there we'll walk together to the Memorial dedicated to victims of Keidan.
Unfortunately, the majority of the first generation of survivors and founders of
our association are not with us any more and we have no addresses and/or phone
numbers of the second generation. Therefore we welcome each recipient of this
announcement to pass this information to people who may be interested to join us
and feel a part of the community.

Shalom to our Keidaner Friends,
As each year, we are going to commemorate our families, murdered in Keidan on August 28, 1941.
We'll meet on Sunday, 29.8.2010, at 17:45 at the same place - near the benches, about 100 meters beyond the main entrance gate to the old cemetery of Holon. From there we'll walk together to the Memorial dedicated to victims of Keidan.
Unfortunately, the majority of the first generation of survivors and founders of our association are not with us any more and we have no addresses and/or phone numbers of the second generation. Therefore we welcome each recipient of this announcement to pass this information to people who may be interested to join us and feel a part of the community.

With best regards,
Arie Shcherbakov
Secretary of the association

Shalom Arie

I am a first generation of a survivor from Keidan, my father who emigrated to South Africa prior to the Shoah. Thank you for letting me know about the memorial. Unfortunately we live in London and won’t be able to attend but will be in Shul on 28 August. My father’s whole family perished so I am so grateful to be told of the service on 29 August.

With gratitude

Kind regards

Barbara Levin

My mother's maiden name was Leven. Her mother came from Keidan but her father came from Vilna. That would be where the names Leven, Levin &Levin would originate. Alice

Dear Family -- A friend sent me this and I thought you might want to see it.  Love, Susanne.
The Only Surviving Album of Auschwitz

This is the story of a Hungarian Jewish woman who survived Auschwitz and found a coat belonging to a guard which she took to shield her from the cold immediately after her liberation.

In the pocket of this coat she found a photo album.  It contained pictures of what went on in this extermination camp.

Imagine her reaction when she saw a picture of herself coming off of the train as well pictures of her family who were already murdered.

This album at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem was donated by this woman in 1980 and will forever be displayed there.

When you have 5 minutes of peace and quiet in front of your computer, watch it and consider passing it around to people that you know so they can share it and know about it.

It is truly moving and important.

See link under.

Thank you for sharing this.
It is with great pride and triumph that my son Jacob will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah Nov 13 2010
Mindful , loving, respectful , principled and a devoted Jewish child he is ...and an honor to what has been taken.

My hope is he can return to us the humanity we lost generations ago and forge a new age committed to tolerance and peace.

Best,
Doug Kadan
