I am interested to know if anyone recognizes the following names or has
information about this family:

My mother's name was Anna Levitan (born c. 1904) in Keidan. Her mother's name
was Feige Antupitski and Feige married Hirsh Tevye Levitan. He was a widower and
she was a widow. Feige had a son from her first marriage, Chone, born c. 1885.

Anna worked in a bakery for a son from Hirsh Tevye's first marriage. Chone
married Rochel Tsurishadai (from Vilna) in 1923 and went to South Africa. They
had two daughhers, Zelda and Rivka (Becky).

Anna married Joseph (Joselis) Kaganas who was originally from Pilvishok. They
married in February 1930 in Keidan and left shortly thereafter for South Africa
and lived in Johannesburg.

Anna also had a full sister, Rivka, who married Moishe Pakroiske (later changed
to Pokroy) and their children were Yankel, Rachmiel, (who went to South Africa)
Munke, Yitchak, Rachel and Hirshke (died in WW2) and Abe and Sore Shainke (also
came to the USA).

Hi!

I have Antupitskis in my ancestry as well, though most directly, pretty far back (early 1800's, I think). The names Feige and Chone sound familiar, actually. I don't have my papers in front of me right now, but I'll take a look as soon as I get home tonight and get back to you. What I have learned about the Antupitskis is that they mainly lived in Ariogala, a town neighboring Keidan. And offhand, I believe that some of the Antupitskis were tavern owners or innkeepers. You can contact the Ariogala genealogy researchers at:
They have lots of records and info.

Hope that helps!
Emily

Hi Emily
Thank you for your e mail - all I really know is  my mother worked in a bakery that was owned by her step brother and his wife (their name could have been Antupitski)
Chone was my mother's brother and his father's name was zundelis .  I don't remember anything about Ariogala.  Did you find any further information on Feiga (her second name was Leba) and Chone?
Are you  in the USA?

Please  let me know.   Micki

Check the memoir by Bernard Gershon Richards on the Keidan.net site.

http://home.comcast.net/~acassel/keidan/bgrichards/bgr1.html

Particularly this passage:

My maternal grandfather, Yakov Herz Sirk -- everybody called him Herz Yankel --
usually rose with the first signs of dawn. Often he got ahead of the dawn. "I
work fast, I eat fast, I sleep fast," he would say. He loved company and
conversation so much that whichever grandson was staying with him at the time
was roused from his' sleep soon after the fire was lighted and the morning
activities begun. His method of waking the household was to walk through all the
rooms and call out, "Get up, kinder - it's six, seven, eight, nine o'clock! Get
up, kinder." Or he would announce to my grandmother that it was high time to get
up and start household affairs going because "der bettler is schein in zibetn
dorf! (the itinerant beggar has already reached his seventh village!)."

I think we can assume "Sirk" and "Shirk" are alternate spellings of the same
name.

All best,

Andy

Hello, Alan,

I have been the coordinator of the Keidan Vital Records Project for LitvakSIG
for many years. We have completed the translation of all the Keidan birth
records, marriage, divorce and death records. The period covered is 1854-1914.
In addition, we have also translated the 20th century Keidan Rabbinate Vital
Records (1922-1939). There are a good number of SIRK records in the various
files. The earliest SIRK birth recorded was in 1854. The latest SIRK death
recorded was in 1899. All of these records are online in the All Lithuania
Database [http://www.litvaksig.org/all.htm]

But if you prefer to have the records on your own computer, you can join the
Keidan Vital Records Project with a $100 contribution to LitvakSIG. The files
will be sent to you as Excel spreadsheets. Let me know if you are interested and
I will forward instructions on how to make the contribution to LitvakSIG.

Hi Alan,
I have a very limited amount of information about the Sirks. My paternal grandmother Feige Elle Leibert (Lebetky, various spellings) was related to the Sirks but I don't know the specifics. I have a 20 year old family mailing list which includes Paul Sirk of Randolph, Mass. The Keidan vital records contains listings for Sirks, but a quick review did not indicate any Shirks. On the other hand, the membership list for the 1930 NY Keidaner Society includes a listing for Barney Shirk. That is about all I know.

traced my family back to Keidan recently, all started with archive of meeting of Keidan Society in NYC in the 1930s or 40s and literate essay about Keidan as the "hole in the
heart" town> Always thought my roots were German, but Germany controled Lithuania
at the time my Great Grandfather immigrated around 1900. I am a new resident of Florida,
having had my family first settle in Brooklyn and the the Bronx, where i grew up. Family name is Shirk sometimes Sirk in research thru ancestry.com Its free and can get you back to the 1800s in Keidan, before may need help.

Hello Sharon and Group,

While normally I don't like to solicit on this site, I just want to tell Sharon
and remind the group of the existence of the Keidan Vital Records Translation
project. It is a LitvakSIG (Special Interest Group) project, and I am the
coordinator. We have translated more than 22,000 vital records--births,
marriages & divorces, and deaths--from Keidan, Dotnuva, Josvainiai and many
other shtetlach in the Keidan area. These are both 19th and 20th century
records. Indeed LIPNIK and ZELL are well represented in my database, as well as
SIRK (for Alan Shirk).

When one joins the Keidan Vital Records Translation project, he/she is sent all
of the records in beautifully organized Excel spreadsheets from which it is easy
to create family trees. IMPORTANT: all of the data is on your own computer; no
searches are necessary to extract records piecemeal. Membership in the Keidan
VRT project requires a $100 donation to LitvakSIG. The wealth of information
received is worth far more than the cost of membership.

If you are interested in learning more or in joining the group, please contact
me: ozabludoff at verizon.net

Maybe I'm late discovering this, but it's a lovely discovery nonetheless. The
New York Public Library has put the full text of the Keidan yizkor book on line.
It can be found here:

http://yizkor.nypl.org/index.php?id=1302

Scroll through the alphabetical listing of towns at the top of the page. Keidan
actually appears twice -- as "Keydan" and as Kedainiai.

Incidentally, I found this via Dovid Katz' interesting website
http://www.holocaustinthebaltics.com. Well worth checking out.

best to all

I was in Keidan wutrh my family two years ago. We went with Simon, the curator of Sugihara House in Kaunas. Simon is a native Lithuanian and very knowledgeable with pretty good English. He also escorted us around Kaunas, the Baltic and into Latvia.
He's thoughtful about expenses--even saved us some money in Riga when he realized we had been cited an "in-season" rate in a beautiful hotel but were entitled to the off-season rate.

Hi Harriet,

A friend of mine went to Vilna and Keidan some years ago and had a great guide. I have left a message for her to contact me with the name of the woman should she remember. If she does I will email you.

Regards

Barbara Levin London UK.

Maybe your guide's name was Regina Kopilovich, who knows Vilna (and Keidan as well).

Hi,
I've been there three times and it's really not necessary to take a guide.  It's right next to the main highway and you can easily fly Ryanair to Kaunas and rent a car and you are there.  There is an English language guidebook, Kedainiai in Your Pocket:
http://www.inyourpocket.com/lithuania/ke
where you can find out where to stay and where to eat and where the places of Jewish life and martyrdom are located as well as other more general places of interest.  There is a tourist office with a big "I" on it in the main square and English-language speaking people inside.  The last time I was there, I met tourists from Sweden and Finland and they were part of a large wave of tourists using Kedainiai as a rest stop.  It's not like the old days!

LIthuania isn't Belarus and so it isn't necessary to take a guide. On the other hand, if anybody can recommend a guide for individual travel to Belarus, I would be very interested in that recommendation.  I'm going to Mir, Nesvizh, Navahrudak, Dyatlova, Slonim, Lida and Hrodna this summer and I must get a guide.  Thanks!
Lynn Lubamersky
