Dear Barbara,

LINDE is one of the most abundant names in my Keidan surname index.
There are 39 LINDE birth records among the 36 years of births that
have been translated to date. It was obviously a very large family
in Keidan.

I won't have any information about the fate of those members of the
LINDE family who were lost or trapped in the Holocaust because the
Keidan vital records we have go only through 1914 (starting in
1822).

Give me just a little time to work on this and I will get back to
you. I cannot make any guarantees, but I hope I can help.

Best wishes,

Olga Zabludoff

Ronald:

I have a record of an Annie (possibly born Hana or Henke) Smit, born
between 1875 and 1881 in Keidan to Yosef Smit and Goldie Krost.
According to my records, Annie had two sisters, one named Etka; the
other's name is unknown. Their father Yosef emigrated to South
Africa. Annie married Shaul Shmuel ("Samuel") Betten, who was born
about 1877 in nearby Seta (Shat). Samuel and his parents and
siblings emigrated to the USA in 1900 (via Liverpool and Quebec) and
settled in Worcester, Massachusetts (Annie may have arrived later; I
don't have an immigration record for her). One of my sources claims
that Annie and Samuel were married in Keidan and Samuel moved there
before emigrating; however, I have their October 1904 marriage record
in Worcester, so they may have met there.

Annie and Samuel moved to the Bronx around 1910, apparently because
Annie had asthma and was told that the air quality was better
there (!). I'm told that Samuel later became the secretary of the
Keidaner Association in New York. They had four children, one of
whom was alive in NYC as of a couple years ago. Annie died in the
Bronx around 1948.

Hope this helps. (By the way, I understand the Krost family has been
extensively researched; I have no records myself, but maybe someone
else can help you with that side of the family.)

Samuel Betten's mother, Leah Dina Pimshteyn (1857-1902), was my great-
grandfather's sister. If anyone has information on the Pimshteyn
family of Keidan, Jonava and the area, I'd appreciate it.

You asked whether anyone had information on the PIMSHTEYN family of

records.

Please go to the LitvakSIG Vital Records Indexing Project at

if you are not familiar with this project. We are nearing completion
of all the translated Keidan birth records and shall be starting on
the marriage records soon. These will be followed by divorce and
death records.

Many thanks..this is the family of Joanne Betten -Kaplan whom I met sedveral
months ago in San Diego....they will be most intrested.. I shall forward
your email to her. Our Smit famioly must come from an earlier time...my
ggrandmother was Enta or Yetta and HER father was Joseph too. What we think
is that the Joseph you mention may have been the grandson of Yetta's
father...as we are often nnamed after our deceased grandparents.....my
ggrandmother would have been born circa 1840 as she died in london in the
1920's.She had one sister. She should appear on the earlier Keidan
records.Yetta /Enta married Isher Stung/Shtung who was the only sibling in
his family... he died young... hence the name phonetically Asherson (=
isherstung)...Many thanks.. Dr Ronald Asherson, South Africa

whom I met in October in San Diego..I nhave forwaqrded the email to her. My
ggrandmother whose father was ALSO Joseph was born circa 1840.... we think
that the Joseph mentioned here may well have been his grandson......so these
are the records we are waiting for. Yetta.or Enta would have been married
anywhere between 1860 -1864... to Isher Stung. Her first child was born in

Sam BETTEN was originally from Seta (Shat), Lithuania.  He married Annie KROST from Kedainiai.  They are buried in the Kedainer Association plot at Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, NY.  Samuel's parents, Solomon BETTEN and Ethel Leah [maiden name unknown] are buried in the Shater Prog. Benevolent Assocation plot in the same cemetery.

Another former president of the Kedainer Association was Samuel GREENBLATT (1876 c.-1938), who was born in Vandziogala, Lithuania.  He was married to Beckie SAGOWITZ (ZAGOVICH from Kedainiai).  Samuel and Beckie are buried in the older plot for the Kedainer Association at Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn.  The point I'm making though is that a president or other officer of the Kedainer Association wasn't necessarily a Kedainer himself, but rather he married one.

Samuel GREENBLATT's Hebrew name was Yehoshua ben Asher Shlomo.  Co-incidental or not, my late father, also named Samuel GREENBLATT (1911-2000), was Shmuel ben Asher.  My father's paternal roots were in Seta and Vandziogala, but I don't know if my father and the president of the Kedainer Association shared a same common ancestor (my father was a generation younger than his Kedainer Association namesake).

My grandfather, William S. Dubins (formerly Dubinsky), was a member of the NY Keidaner Assn in the 1930s. He died in 1937. I think he might be the man in the upper right corner because that man looks an awful lot like my father.

I have released my Zeimiai web page:

http://www.gutstein.net/zeimiai/zeimiai-home.htm

Zeimiai is 12 miles SE of Keidan. The Jews of Zeimiai, along with those of Seta and Keidan, were killed in the Keidan mass-grave site.

http://www.gutstein.net/zeimiai/zeimiai-kedainiai-grave.htm

Two members of this list, Ada Green and Ben-Tsion Klibansky, gave me photos for use.

Zeimiai was a tiny town. There is very little material out there right now. But the hope is that by having the web page, it will attact hits, and therefore, photos and material.

Also released my web page for Zasliai, which is a large town about half-way between Kaunas and Vilnius.

A few corrections regarding my grandfather, Samuel BETTEN:

His parents were Solomon (Schlomo Chatzkel) Betten and Leah Dinah PEMSTEIN.
Etel Leah was Solomon's second wife. Also, Sam married Annie (Hene) SMIT,
not Krost. Her mother was Golda KROST.

When the Keidan Vital Records Indexing Project went into action less
than a year ago, I received an avalanche of inquiries I was unable
to answer. Everyone wanted to know whether I had records for their
grandparents, great-grandparents and g-g-gs. No one seemed to
realize that I didn't know what I had. There was no index and
translations had not yet begun.

But the questions continued. After 25 years of Keidan birth records
had been translated, I compiled a rudimentary surname index based on
those translated records. Now I was able to give the basics: how
many birth records I had for a given surname. But the questions
continued, searching for more specific information that I could not
provide.

Keidaners, now you can ask again if I have your great-great-
grandfather's birth record, and I will find the answer in about
three seconds. Jose Gutstein has applied his imaginative hi-tech
skills in designing the perfect instrument for us. Forty-one years
of translated birth records have just been distributed to qualified
donors in a new format which has been greeted with "WOWs" from
recipients. By April all the birth records will be completed--some
4,500--and translation of the marriage records will commence.

Hi Emily,

I have 11 ZANG birth records. In nine of them the father is a ZANG, and
in two, the mother is a ZANG married to a ROZMAN. The records are for
the following years: 1854, 1859, 1862, 1863, 1880, 1881, 1883, 1886,
1901, 1903, 1906. If you know any specific given names, I can tell you
if they're there. We are not yet finished all the birth records, so
more could show up.

KOTZEN as such I don't see any. But there are KATSENBERGS and KHAZHANS.
--could possibly be another form of the name. Of course, KATS is there
in abundance.

Thanks for asking and let me know if you have further questions.

Olga

Hi Olga,

Thanks so much for your response. Jacob Zang and his children George, Tessie, Lena, Julius and I think there might be a couple of others (unfortunately whose names escape me), would be the ones I'm looking for...George Zang (changed later to Sang) is my great great grandfather. I think he was born around 1880. He and his wife (Sara Sang nee Kotzen) are buried at New Montifiore in Queens.

About the Kotzens, I have some information that they may have lived originally in Ariogala (sp?) and Rasenai (sp?). I've found some hastily written notes that are hard to make sense of! Was there much intermingling between families in these towns and Keidan? What was their relationship to one another?

Thanks again for all your help! I have a distant cousin in Israel who I managed to find (she's also descended from the Zangs) and both of us are eager to learn more.

Regards,
Emily

Hi Emily,

Ariogala was/is 18 miles from Keidan. Yes, the Keidan records
indicate definite connections between the two towns. Many Keidaners
were either registered in Ariogala, had lived there, or moved back
and forth. A website that has lots of information on Ariogala is
David and Sonia Hoffman's Grand Duchy of Lithuania Project:

http://www.jewishfamilyhistory.org/

Some Keidaners also originated in Raseiniai, but those are much
fewer in number. Raseiniai is considerably further from Keidan than
is Ariogala.

I am having trouble identifying Jacob Zang and his children you
name. Yokhel, son of Faitel and Keile Mariasha Zang, was born in
1863, but I don't think he is Jacob. Khiene (1854), Leah (1859),
Nekhama (1852) and Zise were also children of Faitel.

Mendel (1881) and Pinkhes (1886) were Yokhel's children, but they
don't sound like George or Julius, and anyway, Yokhel doesn't sound
like he's Jacob.

There is a Getsel who could possibly be George, and he would have
been born around 1880, but his father was named Faitel. Three of his
children were born between 1901 and 1906. So there you are, lots of
Zangs (I haven't named them all), but they don't seem to fit,
although they are probably a part of your family.

Best,

Olga

grandfather. I think he was born around 1880. He and his wife (Sara
Sang nee Kotzen) are buried at New Montifiore in Queens.

> About the Kotzens, I have some information that they may have
lived originally in Ariogala (sp?) and Rasenai (sp?). I've found
some hastily written notes that are hard to make sense of! Was there
much intermingling between families in these towns and Keidan? What
was their relationship to one another?

Israel who I managed to find (she's also descended from the Zangs)
and both of us are eager to learn more.

Re Kedainiai/Ariogala connections - my Kaplan family appear in Ariogala records c1840s-1880s, then the family appears to have lived for a short time in Kedainiai, before coming to Scotland. (My Fayn family were from nearby Josvainiai).

I visited these 3 towns last year - they are all quite near each other, and families would have moved about/intermarried with each other.

Subject: [JewishKeidan] Keidaners! Now you can ask all...
