Tirthankara Mahavira placed great emphasis on knowledge,
especially discriminatory knowledge or bheda jñana. He
held that correct knowledge is important to ensure correct
conduct.
Jain Doctrine is vast. Jain scriptures written in Prakrit
and Sanskrit are immensely voluminous. Hence, for the
layperson, studying the scriptures is next to impossible.
Hence, in order to help the lay person learn the essence of
the Jain doctrine in brief, certain succinct text were composed
by Jain ascetics. They were meant to be studied thoroughly
and put into practise.
The "Paccis Bol" is one such text. It attempts to present the
entire Jain doctrine in 25 sutras. The 6 dravyas, 9 tattvas, etc.
are all covered in the 25 Bol. The language is simple and
the information accurate.
The English translation by Dr Priyadarshana Jain is quite apt.
The book is richly illustrated, printed on glossy art paper and
beautifully designed with plenty of charts, diagrams and
paintings. A pleasure to read and share.

Dear friends,
Pranam
Jainism is the religion of the self-reliant. Jain monks are masters of their own
destiny, living only to purify themselves in thought, word and deed by their
ascetic conduct and detached benevolence towards all living beings.
For a Jain, the great purpose of life is the achievement of liberation. Ascetic
vows are the path to liberation. Hence, Jains celebrate with great joy whenever
a Jain layperson decides to take up the ascetic vows. We Mumbaikars are indeed
blessed that two such fortunate individuals shall take up the ascetic vows in
our presence.
I am delighted to inform you that Acarya Pushpadantasagara shall bestow
Jaineshvari diksha, giving full ascetic vows to two fortunate individuals -
Kshullaka Prameyasagara and Kshullaka Pratijnasagara. Under his headship, they
shall take the vows of Jinalingi monks.
Another fortunate one, Brahmacari Vishal Jain shall take the vows of a
Kshullaka, or an advanced layman.
This auspicious program shall take place on Sunday, 06/12/2009 in Mumbai. All
our cordially invited to attend.

SANSKRIT VANGMAYA MEIN PURUSH
Ek Paricayatmak Kosha
An Encyclopedia of Males in Sanskrit Literature
With Special Reference to the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas
Compiled by Dr Sipra Banerjee
Sanskrit
South Asian Studies
Encyclopedia
Set of 5 books
Hindi
2009 24 cm x 19 cm 4550 pages
Deluxe Hardcover Edition US $ 135
This
is a magnificent Encyclopedia in Hindi, just prepared and printed this
year. It is the result of a 20 year research project undertaken by Dr
Banerjee, who painstakingly consulted a large number of ancient and
medieval Sanskrit texts, including the Ramayana and Mahabharata and all
their numerous recensions.
Even for the serious student of Sanskrit, and indeed for all those
who are keen on Sanskrit literature and Epics, it is nearly impossible
to read all of the masterpieces available in the Sanskrit language. The
language itself is difficult and the literature it has given birth to
is vast. It is well nigh impossible for even Sanskritists to have read
all of Sanskrit literature.
Hence, in this meticulous encyclopedia, Sipra Banerjee has collated
the information available on each person in each of the epics and the
puranas and pieced it all together.
Nearly 40000 male
characters have been culled from all these texts, and introduced with
contextual references. All those male characters who occur in the two
Epics as well as in the Puranas are covered in this Encyclopedia. Be
they gods, demigods, demons or humans, animals or birds, mountains,
oceans, rivers, kings, ministers, scholars or laymen. In addition,
there is excellent information given on the various yajnas and other
religous rituals, royal lineages of that time, descriptions of ancient
Indian kingdoms with their boundaries, and the mountains, hills,
rivers, etc. that lay within their territory.
This work also sheds light on the weltenschaung of that time, the
society, the science known to man back then and the social and
political situation of that era.
As a bonus, the author has
given a large number of hymns and eulogies for most of the gods
mentioned in this Encyclopedia. Hence, the entry on Ganesha will have
various Sanskrit hymns and eulogies dedicated to him also included in
the entry, as well as tales about Ganesha's life, etc.
All in all, a brilliant scholarly source of information on Ancient
India for the reader. An encyclopedic work to treasure for years to
come.
The publishers are to be credited for publishing it so beautifully at such a low
price.
We are proud to distribute this collector's item. We ship books all over the
world by courier and accept payment by card.

Bahushruta Jain monk Muni Jambuvijayaji was killed in a road accident. His
tragic death is deeply mourned.
In the morning of 12 November, 2009 Jambuvijayaji was traveling on foot in the
company of other monks from Balotra in Rajasthan to Jaisalmer when they were hit
by a speeding truck. Two monks, Jambuvijayaji and Namaskarvijayaji died on the
spot and others are seriously injured. Jambuvijayaji was 87 years old.
I am deeply saddened to hear of this grave loss. Muni Jambuvijaya was a scholar
in the tradition of Upadhyaya Yashovijaya. He was only interested in the Agamas
and his work. He had no interest in sectarian politics, in building temples,
etc. The focus of his life was to produce high class critical editions of the
Agamas for the Mahavira Jain Vidyalaya series.
I have been fortunate enough to meet him in 2004. One of his students, Prof Dr
Sin Fujinaga had taken me to meet him. We were in Ahmedabad as we were both
presenting papers at the World Peace Conference there.
Dr Fujinaga took me to Koba and there we spent about 7 - 8 hours with pujya
maharaj Shri Jambuvijayaji.
Jambuvijayaji was kind enough to spare a lot of time for us. He knew my
great-grandfather, Pandit Nathuram Premi, very well and reminisced about his
meetings with him.
Fortunately for me, Shri Chitrabhanuji also arrived at about the same time to
meet Jambuvijayaji. And since I am close to Chitrabhanuji, it was wonderful to
spend the day in the august presence of such learned scholars.
We discussed several issues. Jambuvijayaji spoke of his tremendous reverence for
Acarya Kundakunda, Acarya Pujyapada, Acarya Akalanka and Acarya Joindu and both
Chitrabhanuji and Jambuvijayaji expressed their immense admiration for the
Samayasara.
Jambuvijayaji spoke of the many occasions when he has visited Digambara Jain
temples and said in a light vein. - 'Pitaji to pitaji hote hain, aankh lagaao
to, nahiin lagaao to.' (My father is my father, whether he is fitted with
external eyes or not). He was referring to the Jinas, and saying that whether
the Jina image was a Shvetambara image (with external eyes affixed to it) or a
Digambara image (without external eyes affixed to it), made no difference to its
sanctity.
Both Jambuvijayaji and Chitrabhanuji, also, the Bandhu Triputi (Titthal) were
all antevasi (direct) students of Acarya Premi Suri (of Pindwada). Acarya Prem
Suri was one of the most important Jain monks of the 20th century. His students
were all masterpieces. Of them, Acarya Bhuvanabhanu Suri, Acarya Ram Suri,
Acarya Jayaghosha Suri were all Gacchadhipatis. Jambuvijayaji, Chitrabhanuji,
Acarya Jayasundara Suri, the Bandhu Triputi are all widely respected and learned
scholars.
Jambuvijayaji was a student of Prem Suri and then became a student of
Bhuvanabhanu Suri. I still retain with pride, my copy of JAIN DARSHAN by Dr
Mahendrakumar Nyayacarya, autographed by Jambuvijayaji. I will treasure my
meeting with him in Koba and am thankful to my friend Dr Sin Fujinaga for having
taken me there to meet him.
Jambuvijayaji was a credit to Jainism. He worked all his life to create
critically edited volumes of the Agamas. After his death, I can only think of
Shilacandra Suri who is doing this kind of work in Shvetambara murtipujaka
parampara. There is no monk in the Digambara parampara who is doing this kind of
critical editing work. I have hopes from the Shvetambara Terapanthi parampara.
Hopefully, they will carry on this noble task of producing critically edited
texts of all Agamic literature. It is a very crucial task and Jambuvijayaji,
like Jinavijayaji and Punyavijayaji before him, stuck to this low profile task
manfully all his life.
His death is a blow to all of Indological studies, not just Jain studies.
Eminent Western scholars of Jainism such as Prof Dr Padmanabh S Jaini, Prof Dr
Nalini Balbir, Dr Paul Dundas, Prof Dr Phyllis Granoff, Prof Dr Willem Bollee,
Prof Dr Adelheid Mette, Prof Dr John Cort, Prof Dr Sin Fujinaga, Prof Dr Olle
Qvarnstroem, Dr Peter Fluegel, Dr Kornelius Kruempelmann, Dr Eva DeClercq and Dr
Piotr Balcerowicz will all be deeply saddened by this loss. As indeed is all of
India.
I bow in reverence to his profound scholarship and remember with gratitude his
kindness to me.
