Jaya Jinendra

A superlative work on Jaina Nyaya, in the Navyanyaya style..
by super scholar Mahopadhyaya Yashovijaya Gani

ASHTASAHASRITATPARYAVIVARANAM (Sanskrit)
In 2 volumes
By Upadhyaya Yashovijaya
Ed. by Muni Vairagyarativijaya with 11 Appendices
Vijayamahodayasuri Granthamala 15
Distributed by Hindi Granth Karyalay
2004 250 x 188 mm 903 pp in 2 volumes
Hardback Rs. 400 for the set

Digambara Acarya Samantabhadra, 2nd century CE, composed
the 'Aptamimamsa' in 114 karikas laying the foundation for Jaina
philosophical works and sowing the seeds of Jaina Nyaya.

Acarya Akalanka Deva, 5th century CE, the master of Jaina
Nyaya, wrote the 'Ashtashati' an 800 karika commentary on this
seminal work. In the 9th century, Acarya Vidyanandi, the great
polemician wrote a comprehensive 8000 shloka commentary on
Akalanka's 'Ashtashati' known as the 'Ashtasahasri'.

With its piercing appraisals of rival darshanas and a penetrating
critique of opponent naiyayikas, this was the authoritative work
on Jaina Nyaya.

With the advent of the Navyanyaya, it was felt that the school
known as Akalanka Nyaya and its three great commentaries, the
'Prameyakamalamartanda', the 'Nyayakumudacandra' and the
'Ashtasahasri' would have to be rewritten or represented in a
fresh way.

Shvetambara ascetic Yashovijaya, a super scholar and master of
Navyanyaya, undertook this daunting task and composed an
8000 shloka vivarana on the 'Ashtasahasri' in the Navyanyaya style
known as the 'Ashtasahasritatparyavivaranam', the present work.

Hence this work carries the central ideas of Jaina philosophy as
mooted by four great scholar-monks :
Acarya Samantabhadra
Acarya Akalanka Deva
Acarya Vidyanandi
Upadhyaya Yashovijaya

Since the first three were Digambaras and the fourth Shvetambara,
this great work underlines two things:
1. The basic unity of the Jaina Doctrine
2. When the two sects come together, great things happen

Navyanyaya works are typically composed in the vada style. This
work includes 35 vadas, which is an incredible intellectual feat.

It features rebuttals to the great logicians Raghunatha Tarkashiromani;
Raghudeva Bhattacarya; Madhusudana Sarasvati; Brahmendra;
Gangesha Upadhyaya; Bhavadeva Tarkalankara; Bhattoji Dikshita;
Gopala Sarasvati; Shantarakshita; Dharmakirti

Credit goes to Muni Vairagyarativijaya, who edited this great work
with the help of the handwritten MSS. believed to be written by
Yashovijaya, preserved at BORI in Pune. This edition is made
especially useful by scholarly indexing and 11 appendices.

In the appendices, under the heading Tippani, the editor has referrred
to more than 600 works to elucidate the words of Yashovijaya.

The final press copy of this work has been proof read and
cross-checked three times against the original MSS, to minimise errors.
The composing and layout ensure that both 'Ashtasahasri' and
'Ashtasahasritatparyavivaranam' may be read on the same page.

To this end, different fonts have been used to distinguish the mula patha
of both works. Relevant purva paksha, uttara paksha, vivarana grantha,
citations and pramanas are located on the same page to facilitate study.

Many MSS used to edit this work have been sourced from
Shri Kailashasagarasuri Jñanamandir, Koba.
