SAVAYAPANNATTI (Prakrit - Sanskrit - Hindi)
With auto commentary in Sanskrit
By Haribhadra Suri
With Introduction, Hindi Translation, Index of Verses and 8 Appendices
By Pt. Balchandra Siddhanta Shastri
1999 245 x 180 mm 262 pp
Hardcover Rs. 90

This is a superb work on Shravakacara, outlining ideal conduct
for a lay follower of the Jina. This work in Prakrit by
Haribhadra, a legendary Shvetambara scholar-ascetic of the
8th century CE has a Sanskrit auto commentary. Said to have
been based upon the 7th chapter of Umasvati's Tattvarthasutra,
its authorship has been erroneously attributed in the past to
Umasvati himself. It has 401 Prakrit gathas which have mostly
been composed by Haribhadra. Some of the gathas are
citations from earlier Jain works.

This work explains the 12 types of shravaka dharma. Since the
mula of shravaka dharma, and of Sadhu dharma, is Samyaktva,
Haribhadra gives a penetrating explanation of Samyaktva and
the karma siddhanta in this work. Savayapannatti also explains
the 7 tattvas in a very incisive manner.

This is followed by a detailed explanation of the anuvratas the
highlight of which is his clarification of doubts about the ahimsa
anuvrata (Gathas 107 - 259).

Haribhadra also clarifies the differences between a layman and
a monk (Gathas 265 - 311) vis-à-vis upapata, sthiti, gati,
kashaya, bandhaka, vedaka, pratipatti and atikrama.

He also throws light on the ideal home for a shravaka, his / her
ideal lifestyle, travelling schedule, minimal ascetic practices,
recommends optimum conduct and the ideal death for a layman.

This is a brilliant work by one of the intellectual giants in the
Shvetambara tradition. Haribhadra was known as the ideal
writer who remained within orthodox teachings and yet wrote
with the genius of a independent thinker.

The first Digambara shravakacara was composed in Sanskrit
by the versatile genius Acarya Samantabhadra in the 4th
century CE. Haribhadra's work was composed 4 centuries
later, in Prakrit with an auto commentary in Sanskrit.

The scholarly Introduction and superb Hindi translation add
immense value to the work and make it accessible to those for
whom it was originally composed - the shravakas.
