In the Jain tradition, there is no agreement over the Moksha
of women in that birth. There is a manyata bheda in the two
traditions, Digambara and Shvetambara. Dr. Jaini is a hugely
respected modern scholar of Jainism, and Professor of
Buddhist studies at University of California, Berkeley. He
"brings to light heretofore untranslated texts evidencing a
centuries old debate between the two principal Jain sects,
the Digambaras and the Shvetambaras on the critical issue
of whether or not women can attain spiritual liberation."
Age-old Digambara attitudes towards stri mukti were
questioned for the first time from within the community by
Prof. Hiralal Jain in the early decades of the 20th century,
based on his findings in the Shatkhandagama (Scripture in
Six Parts). Great controversy erupted over his article and
the issue of stri mukti remains a sensitive one.
Jaini traces age-old views on stri mukti of the Digambaras
and Shvetambaras. He explores the Prakrit and Sanskrit
texts of both sects that deal with the issue. He quotes them
and systematically discusses the arguments offered by both
sides. As an impartial scholar, he leaves the reader to form
his own opinion.
It is a sign of Jaini's vast scholarship that despite dealing
with a sensitive issue that has been the subject of intense
sectarian debate, he exemplifies scholarly objectivity and
does not tread on sectarian corns.
The book is highly erudite and informative, written by an
authority on Jainism and Buddhism. A must read for every
Indologist and student of Jainism.
