This is a uniquely insightful work on Jain Shravakacaras. The
Shravakacaras have been thoroughly examined by the author.
Additional information is also given on the authors of each
book.
The author has attempted to describe the contents of Jain
Shravakacaras, and has studied the earliest and most
authentic Shravakacaras found in both Digambara as well as
Shvetambara traditions.
A vast amount of Jain literature is found in old Kannada and
Tamil and has concentrated instead only on the works
written in Sanskrit and Prakrit. He has not referred to
modern texts written in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.
Almost all shravakacaras have been composed by monks,
Digambara Pandit Ashadhara being the only exception.
Prof. R. Williams starts the book with a deeply researched
and accurate Introduction where he explains the concept,
history and describes the most significant modern
interpretative works on Shravakacaras.
An excellent work. Balanced, rational and well-researched.
A benchmark for Jain scholarship.
