PARIKSAMUKHAM (Sanskrit - English)
A Seminal Work on Jaina Nyaya
By Manikyanandi
With PRAMEYARATNAMALA (Sanskrit)
(A laghuvrtti on Pariksamukham)
By Anantavirya
1990 245 x 160 mm 346 pp
81-7019-365-6 Hardcover Rs. 500
'Pariksamukham' is a lucid perfectly organised work on Jain logic.
It is a pioneering effort, a benchmark in the post Akalanka era. 2
commentaries, 'Prameyakamalamartanda' and 'Prameyaratnamala'
were written on this work. Devasuri's
'Pramananayatattavalokalankara' and its auto commentary
'Syadvadaratnakara' are largely based on the 'Pariksamukham'.
'Pariksamukham' closely follows the lead taken by Akalanka. He
defines pramana as apurva svaparavyavasayi jñana.
Manikyanandi has a mind of his own, and unlike his predecessors,
he places Agama under paroksa pramana. Writing in an increasingly
hostile age, when Jainism was coming under attack from all sides,
Manikyanandi added vyayasaya or niscaya to the Jaina definition
of pramana, in order to differentiate Jaina Nyaya from its Buddhist
counterpart.
Manikyanandi belonged to the Nandi Sangha of the Digambara
order. 'Pariksamukham' has been described by commentator
Anantavirya as "Nyayavidyamrta". This is because Manikyanandi
brings together Jain nyaya in its entirety and single-handedly
formulates the "Jaina Nyaya Sutras".
The Introduction by Dr. S.C. Ghoshal is scholarly and absorbing.
It is has a wealth of accurate, well-researched information.

PRAMEYAKAMALAMARTANDA PARISHILANA (Sanskrit - Hindi)
A Hindi exposition of the 'Prameyakamalamartanda'
1998 210 x 135 mm 284 pp
Paperback Rs. 50
Manikyanandi's "Pariksamukham" occupies a unique place in Jaina
Nyaya. Acarya Prabhacandra is known chiefly for his penetrating
and exhaustive commentaries, Nyayakumudacandra (on Akalanka's
Laghiyastraya) and Prameyakamalamartanda, on the Pariksamukham.
The Prameyakamalamartanda covers 12000 sloka pramana prameyas
that exhaustively cover all issues related to Nyaya, and address
opposing viewpoints. Hence it occupies a unique and exceptional place
in Indian Nyayashastra. It is a commentary, but owing to its depth and
incisiveness, it enjoys the stature of an independent work.
Since Nyaya works are all composed in Sanskrit and often difficult to
grasp, there was the need of a succinct Parishilana in Hindi. Hence the
Prameyakamalamartanda Parishilana works as a key to understanding
the Prameyakamalamartanda.
This Parishilana is the work of Sarvadarshanacarya Prof. Udayachandra
Jain, who has also produced the Aptamimamsa Tattvapradipika and
the Svayambhustotra Tattvapradipika. Prof. Udayachandra Jain is
widely regarded as the successor to Mahendrakumar Nyayacarya in
the North Indian Digambara lay tradition of scholars.
