PRAMEYAKAMALAMARTANDA (Sanskrit)

'Prameyakamalamartanda' is virtually an encyclopaedia of Indian
philosophy... It is a veritable treasure trove of Nyayashastra!

It elaborates Jain Nyaya placing it in contextual relationship with
Indian Nyayashastra as a whole. The Jain doctrine is presented
as Uttara Paksha while other systems of Indian philosophy are
presented as the Purva Paksha and thoroughly analysed.

Hence, a thorough study of the text 'Prameyakamalamartanda'
will enable the reader to master major systems of Indian
philosophy. This reprint is a great boon for scholars and
students alike.

Granthaparicaya

Since 'Prameyakamalamartanda' is a Sanskrit commentary on
'Parikshamukham', the mula sutras are given followed by the
commentary. Since the commentary is exhaustive, each page
bears the ref. no. of the relevant mula sutra.

Pathabhedas are clearly indicated. A shuddhipatra has been
added as part of the appendices.

All citations used in the commentary are indicated by " " and
the text from which they have been taken mentioned in [ ].
There is also an Avatarana Suci in the appendices.

The index has been arranged to present the Purva Paksha and
Uttara Paksha in each chapter.

There are seven appendices. They are as follows:
Parishishta 1. The mula sutrapatha of "Parikshamukham"
Parishishta 2. List of citations used in the 'Prameyakamalamartanda'
Parishishta 3. List of definitions used in the "Parikshamukham"
Parishishta 4. List of definitions used in the 'Prameyakamalamartanda'
Parishishta 5. Texts and authors referred to in the 'Prameyakamalamartanda'
Parishishta 6. List of key words used in the 'Prameyakamalamartanda'
Parishishta 7. Pathantaras in the 'Prameyakamalamartanda' mss from Arrah

In addition, the first chapter also has comparative notes with
other Jain and Indian texts.

Unusually for a Nirnayasagara publication, the book has a Hindi
Introduction, where the editor presents his considered opinions
regarding the time of the composition of this text, the dating of its
author and other related information.

Part of the introduction, entitled "Acarya Prabhacandra" has
been borrowed from the introduction to 'Nyayakumudacandra'
by the same editor.

Core subject matter of the 'Prameyakamalamartanda'

The author presents an incisive definition of Pramana, its nature
and attributes comparing it with the definitions of Pramana
presented by rival schools of philosophy.

Subjects that were current to the intellectual world then have
been thoroughly analysed. For instance, Bhartrhari's
Shabdabrahmavada, Akhyativada, Prasiddharthavada,
Atmakhyativada, Anirvacaniyakhyativada, Smrtipramosha,
Shunyavada, Sakarajñanavada, Bhutacaitanyavada,
Atmapratyakshatva, Pramanyavada, Abhavavicara,
Yogyatavicara and Sarvajñatavada.

The author has also entered into discussion of contested issues
such as Smrti-pramanya, Anekantavada, Anvitabhidhanavada,
etc.

He has compared notes with other Indian philosophical
traditions such as Nyaya, Mimamsaka, Buddhist, Bhartrhari,
Advaiti and Samkhya. There are plentiful references to
important philosophical literature available to Prabhacandra.

The ecumenically minded Prabhacandra has quoted 22 verses
of Dharmakirti's 'Sambandhapariksha' and enriched it with his
own commentary.

All in all, the 'Prameyakamalamartanda' is a masterpiece of
Indian Logic and truly a jewel in the crown of Jain Nyaya.

The editing by Mahendrakumar Nyayacarya does justice to his
status as the finest scholar of Jain Nyaya in the 20th century.
