"The Position of Women in Hindu Civilization : From Prehistoric Times
to the Present Day" sheds light on the status of and attitudes towards
Hindu women in society. Ironically, the author has used the word Hindu
when referring to women of the Vedic era, whereas the word is of
non-Indian origin and had not even been coined by then!

Written way back in 1938, this book examines impartially all evidence
available to the author then, and successfully attempts to understand the
subject in an analytical manner. The author has critically examined the
position of women right from the Vedic age to the early decades of the
20th century. He has not attempted to gloss over flaws of the Indian
society and has not tried to exaggerate the virtues thereof.

In addition, the book also attempts to pave the way for future equitable
relations between men and women in modern India.

A great read for the general reader, the social anthropologist and the
Indologist.
