The Gita is easily the most easily identifiable single volume scripture
of Vedanta. Regarded as the Bible of the Hindus, Gita is one of the
most important works shedding light on the philosophy of life,
ethics and religion.
The Gita is a work in Sanskrit divided into eighteen chapters. There
have been many translations and expositions on the Gita in Sanskrit
as well as modern Indian languages. Some of the most significant
being Shankara's "Shankarabhagavatapada" commentary,
Abhinavaguptapada's "Gitarthasangrahah" commentary, and the
commentaries by Madhva and Ramanuja; and modern works like
"Jñaneshvari" by Sant Jñaneshvar and "Gita Rahasya" by Tilak.
Tilak's Gita is known for its philosophical depth, clarity and breadth
of vision. Tilak was a truly modern Indian, combining astute Vedic
learning with the systematic presentation of Western scholars. His
deep knowledge of the Indian philosophical systems, his generosity
of thought and the perceptiveness of his writing give this
commentary the gravitas and dignitas of an original work.
An exceptionally incisive commentary on the Gita, bringing to life
the philosophy and value systems preached by the Vedic religion.
