A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF JAINISM & BUDDHISM (English)
By Sital Prasad
First pub. in Chennai : 1932
Bibliotheca Indo-Buddhica Series No. 7

This work by legendary Jain scholar Brahmacari Sital Prasadji
emphasises the points of agreement within the Jaina and the
Buddhist doctrines. The author studied Jain scriptures in
Prakrit and Sanskrit; and Buddhist scriptures in Pali and
English. He discerned large areas of convergence in the two
religions. Each of the two has borrowed material from each
other, or derived material from a common source.

The author also states the Jain and Buddhist concepts of
Ahimsa and the karma theory. He points out their similarities.
Since there are no records of the actual teachings of Mahavira
and Buddha present before us, and whatever is available to us
is what they have reportedly said, the author has tried to
corroborate his statements with the oldest available works
found in other traditions.

He also attempts to trace the influence of Jainism and Buddhism
on the Judeo-Christian religions.

The Introduction is a mini-book by itself and gives a glimpse
of the book's contents and establishes the framework of the
author's perspective.

The book is extremely well written, and though some of the
author's findings may seem dated today, the overall scholarly
brilliance of the author cannot be denied.

The Chapters are as under :

Introduction
Chapter 1 : Nirvana, Moksha or Liberation
Chapter 2 : Existence of the Soul
Chapter 3 : The Path of Nirvana or Liberation
Chapter 4 : Karmas and their fruits
Chapter 5 : Ahimsa
Chapter 6 : Why Jainism and Buddhism are the same

Sital Prasad is considered to be one of Jainism's great scholars
and this book is clear evidence of this.
