Jai Jinendra,

JainNet unites the Jain community distributed throughout the world and
facilitates positive interaction amongst them. The list is non-sectarian and
will publicize messages without regard to any particular sects like Derawasi,
Sthanakwasi, Digamber, Swetamber, Kanji Swami, Srimad Rajchandra etc.

All of you are able to post to the list! Nobody is big or small here. Nor is
there any Ghee boli:) As long as your message is worthy of appealing to the
Jain Community, you may post it here for a worldwide coverage.

You are humbly requested to post a clean message. Please properly format your
contribution and use a subject line. Please do not send FORWARDS as some of
them are not going through yahoogroups properly. Virus warnings, chain letters,
commercial messages etc. should not be posted either. The better you stay
within this framework, the higher are the chances of your message getting
posted!

If you wish to help out the list, please add a subscribe box for it on your
site. You may pick up its HTML code from
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JainNet/promote. Let us try to unite as many
Jains as possible!!

The most important festival of Jainism i.e. "PARYUSHAN " . One custom to be followed after the last day of Paryushan (Samvatsari) is that of saying "Michhami Dukkadam". On Samvatsari day the ritual of "Pratikraman" is performed. Since "Samvatsari" is an annual event so is the Samvatsari Pratikraman. Under Samvatsari Pratikraman there comes the retrospection of all bad deeds and mistakes committed in the past year. We are critical of the bad deeds and resolve not to let them happen in the future. We also request forgiveness from all the living beings in the world if we might have knowingly or unknowingly caused harm to them. Thus, after the Pratikraman it is customary to request forgiveness from everyone we know and meet by saying "Michhami Dukkadam". The idea behind it being that - "After requesting forgiveness from all living beings in general as part of Pratikraman, I do so one-to-one with you." We become more specific and personal by doing so. In addition to requesting forgiveness, one has to grant forgiveness too. Thus by forgiving everyone and requesting forgiveness from all we ligthen ourselves and our mind from past year's misdeeds."Michchhami (Mithya) means fruitless / forgiven and Dukkadam (Dushkrit) means bad deeds. Therefore the meaning of Michchhami Dukkadam is'My bad deeds be fruitless'. So the idea behind conveying Michchhami Dukkadam is that if I have caused any harm to you then may those bad deeds be forgiven, become fruitless
" KHAMEMI SAVVE JIVA:- I forgive all the living beings

SAVVE JIVA KHAMANTU :- ME I seek pardon from all the living beings

MITTI ME SAVVA BHUTESU :- I am friendly towards all the living beings

VERAM MAJJHAM NA KENVI :- And seek enmity with none.

MICHHAMI DUKKADAM! Forgive me for my ignorance! Self-Realization: I am pure soul. I am not body. Concentrate on three spiritual jewels: Right Knowledge, Right Vision and Right Conduct. While meditating, exhale and inhale through the process, drawing our energy from the naval to head. Concentrate on endless virtues and attributes of our soul. The practice of meditation helps us to purify our mental state, to control our emotions of hatred, greed, etc., and feel eternal happiness and serenity.
Pls correct me if I am wrong in any of the explanations. I have tried to present it to the best of my knowledge and understanding.

So many people who have been abused, neglected, and or
hurt in many other ways have great difficulty getting to true
forgiveness. The way to get stuck and block yourself from
forgiveness is to mistakenly believe that by holding on to
your anger, rage, and hate that you are getting revenge
upon the person you choose not to forgive. Nothing could
be further from the truth.

Forgiveness is NOT about justifying anyone's wrong
behaviour, ever. Forgiveness is not about forgetting.
Forgiveness does not mean that you have to reconnect
or have the person you want forgive involved in your life.

Forgiveness is remembering and making a choice to let
go. The letting go is for you. Forgiveness is a gift that you
can give to yourself. If you continue to hold the hurt, anger,
and hate, you only hurt yourself. You are not hurting the
person or persons that hurt you.

In order for forgiveness to be possible it is necessary to
stop blaming. No matter how much we may have suffered
as children we will stay stuck in our pain as long as we
continue to blame our abusers for all that has gone asunder
in our lives.

When we own our own issues, and when we realize that most
of the things we are not pleased about in our lives are a
direct result of our own choices, only this kind of ownership
of our issues will enable us to move forward and to forgive.

Forgiveness is Freedom.

Jain canon consists of 12 Angas said to be promulgated by Mahavira
himself. Of these, the "Viahapannatti" (Sanskrit - Vyakhyaprajñapti)
is the fifth.

The "Viahapannatti" is said to have been composed by ganadhara
Sudharma Svami. It may be described as the "Exposition of
Explanations". It is the largest canonical text of the Jain canon and
said to contain 60000 questions answered by Mahavira.

The subject matter of the answers ranges from the Jain Doctrine
to rules of ascetic behaviour.

Briefly, the answers may be categorised under the following
categories:
1. related to ascetic conduct
2. related to the six substances
3. related to the Jain Ontology
4. related to Reincarnation
5. related to Jain Geography
6. related to Jain Cosmology
7. related to Jain Mathematics
8. related to Obstetrics
9. brief biographies of famous contemporaries of Mahavira
10. miscellaneous subjects

The Bhagavati Sutra is divided into 41 sections known as Shatakas.
The three volumes cover the first nine Shatakas.

It is estimated that a further three volumes, expected be ready by
2010, shall complete the entire Bhagavati Sutra.

The Shatakas do not follow any order, and the text gets repetitive
at times, as it is following the question-answer pattern. The
questions are raised by Gautama, Makandiputra, Roha, Agnibhuti,
Vayubhuti, Skandaka, Jayanti, etc.

The Prakrit gathas are followed by Hindi and English expositions.
Key concepts of Jain Doctrine are explained in a simple and lucid
manner.

A 142 page glossary translates Prakrit terms into modern English.

The typeset is brand new, a pleasure to read. The print quality is
excellent. Gorgeous illustrations add to the beauty and value of
this set of 3 volumes.

A welcome addition to the growing list of English works on the
Agamas!

Note, we always sell the books as a set. But those who have already
bought Bhagavati Sutra Vols. I and ll, may buy Volume lll separately.

2007      215 x 140 mm     258 pages
Paperback      Rs. 250

"Jainism is one of the forgotten jewels of the world's faiths. Aidan
Rankin introduces us to the essence of this spirituality in a book
that is full of wisdom and intelligence".
- William Bloom

Jainism is one of the world's oldest religions. It is rigorous,
rational and unequivocal in its teachings on non-violence and
insistence on nobility in thoughts, words and deeds.

Self-reliance is the cornerstone of Jain philosophy. Jain cosmology is
very advanced and Jain theory of karma is highly rational. It revolves
around a profoundly spiritual personal journey where each soul is
enjoined to be of assistance to one another but remain detached
throughout.

The Chapter Scheme is as under:

Preface
Introduction
1. Why Jainism?
2. The Faith of the Pathfinders
3. The Gentle Conquerors
4. A Matter of Karma
5. Learning to Live Lightly: Jainism's Ecological Vision
6. Non-Violence of the Mind: The Doctrine of Many - Sidedness
7. Ahimsa: The Way of Humility

Subject: Encourage Young Jains to Join Armed Forces

Now it is time to encourage young Jains to join armed forces. Young Jains should
consider armed forces as career opportunity. When we are expecting I.A.S. and
I.P.S. officers from Jain community, it will be better to add Army officers to
this list.

Already there are many Jain officers in Indian Armed Forces, but the number must
be increased.

Joining Armed Forces is not a new thing for Jains. Our community has given many
great Warriors, Generals and brave soldiers to the nation for thousands of
years. We have seen Jains on the highest post at Indian Navy and Indian Air
force. We should keep up and accelerate this tradition.

Joining Armed Forces will be beneficial to both the community and the nation. It
will give adventurous career opportunity to our guys and gals.

We should ignore a tiny minority section of Jains who oppose joining Armed
Forces in the name of Ahimsa. Their knowledge about Jain contribution to
Military History of India is zero. Moreover, they know nothing about true
meaning of Ahimsa.

Armed Forces are not for attacking other nations. They are just for saving the
nation from invaders. Wars are not fought for killing people, but to save
national interests and citizens. Without Armed Forces, no nation can survive.
Without Armed Forces, no nation can keep peace within its territory. Just
imagine what would happen if there are no Armed forces in your country.

People do not join Armed Forces to get a chance to kill people. There are many
things that attract them towards the forces. One of it is to live an adventurous
life. For many others, it is a national duty to join the forces. For many, it is
an attractive career opportunity.

Armed Forces are not for those who want a safer and monochrome life. The forces
are not for money-oriented people. I know that the money-oriented people will
never wish to join Armed Forces. But all Jain are not money oriented. The new
generations of moneymaker Jains also are looking for different things and
colorful life. They want to escape themselves from traditional professions.
Armed Forces are inviting them.

Jain organizations like Jain International Trade Organization (JITO) should
encourage young Jain guys and girls to join Armed Forces. JITO is trying a lot
to see I.A.S. (Indian Administrative Services) and I.P.S. (Indian Police
Services) officers from Jain community. It has got an overwhelming response from
young Jains from every part of India. Now JITO should think about Armed Forces.
JITO should encourage and help young Jains to Join National Defense Academy,
Dehradun Military Academy and other defense training institutes in India. Like
the JITO training and help centers for competitive exams for I.A.S. and I.P.S.,
there should be JITO centers for defense Services also. Further, JITO should
consider about establishing Jain Military Schools at major cities of India.

Here is one more suggestion. What JITO is doing in India, JAINA (Federation of
Jain Associations in North America) should do in North America. When American
Jains are citizens of U.S. and Canada, it is their duty and right to join the
Administration, Police and Armed Forces there. JAINA should take initiative for
it.

JAINA UDDHARANA KOSA - Volume One
A Collection of the Citations in Prakrit and Sanskrit
Languages as found in Jaina texts, commentaries and the like
Compiled and Edited with an Introduction, Bibliographies,
Variants, Indices, etc. by Dr. Kamalesh Kumar Jain
Foreword by Professor S.R. Banerjee
Jainism
Indology
Sanskrit
Prakrit
2003     250 x 190 mm     621 pages
Hardcover     Rs. 2100

"The value of this Kosa is indeed, incomparable. It has manifold
purposes. First of all, these quotations inform us (about) the type
of non-Jain texts that were utilised by the Jains. In order to build
an edifice of Jain thought and ideas, these quotations will help
record the development of Jain philosophical ideas and concepts."

It is from the citations used by Jain commentators that we can
glean the history and scope of the role that Jains played in the
development of Indian epistemological thought.

Jainism is one of the three major Indian religions. It has made
manifold contributions to Indian culture, ethics and spirituality.
Jains have played an active role in shaping India's astrology,
astronomy, mathematics, linguistics, literature and languages.
Jain philosohphical treatises come to the forefront with
Kundakunda's pioneering and unmatched Prabhrta works in
Prakrit, and Umasvami's magnum opus 'Tattvarthasutra' in
Sanskrit.

Jain literature is vast. Thousands  of works on every topic under
the sun are covered. Many of these works have been lost with the
passage of time. Only their essence remains preserved in the
from of citations or Uddharanas.

These Uddharanas, all in Sanskrit or Prakrit, have been
categorised on the basis of their antiquity.

Vol. 1 covers all those from 4th century CE to 9th century CE

Vol. 2 shall cover all those from 10th century CE to 13th century CE

Vol. 3 shall cover all those from 14th century CE to 19th century CE

The present Volume {Vol.1} covers all the Prakrit and Sanskrit
Uddharanas from the 4th century and earlier to 9th century CE.

The volume has been painstakingly edited by the diligent Prakritist
Dr. Kamalesh Kumar Jain in nine years.

It's dedication page reads as under:

                                       To
                        "The Sacred Memory of
                  PANDIT NATHURAM PREMI
A renowned scholar of Jain Literature and History"

THE JAIN PATH
Ancient Wisdom for an Age of Anxiety
By Aidan Rankin
Jainism
New Age
English
2007 215 x 140 mm 258 pages
Paperback Rs. 250

"Jainism is one of the forgotten jewels of the world's faiths. Aidan
Rankin introduces us to the essence of this spirituality in a book
that is full of wisdom and intelligence".
- William Bloom

Jainism is one of the world's oldest religions. It is rigorous,
rational and unequivocal in its teachings on non-violence and
insistence on nobility in thoughts, words and deeds.

Self-reliance is the cornerstone of Jain philosophy.

Jain cosmology is very advanced and reflects a profound and
informed curiosity towards the cosmos.

The Jain theory of karma is highly rational. It revolves around
a profoundly spiritual personal quest where each soul is
enjoined to be of assistance to one another while remaining
detached throughout.

The Chapter Scheme is as under:

Preface
Introduction

1. Why Jainism?

2. The Faith of the Pathfinders

3. The Gentle Conquerors

4. A Matter of Karma

5. Learning to Live Lightly: Jainism's Ecological Vision

6. Non-Violence of the Mind: The Doctrine of Many-Sidedness

7. Ahimsa: The Way of Humility

8. Ancient Wisdom for an Age of Anxiety

Illustrated STHANANGA SUTRA

2004 250 x 190 mm 1174 pp + 31 colour plates on art paper
Deluxe Hardcover edition Rs. 1200 per set

It is the Svetambara belief that the first eleven Angas
of the Jain Canon have survived despite the bad
effects of this era, known to Jains as the
Hundavasarpini kala.

This is why, under the leadership of Devardhigani Ksamasramana, the
first eleven Angas of the
Svetambara canon were formalised and reduced to
writing. This took place at Valabhi (Gujarat) in 446 CE,
993 years after Mahavira's nirvana.

In the recension held at Valabhi, in Gujarat, the
Sthananga Sutra was finalised and redacted. The
language used was Ardhamagadhi Prakrit.

The mula sutras of the Sthananga Sutra are difficult
to understand without the help of a tika. Hence, in the
11th century CE, Abhayadevasuri wrote a
comprehensive Sanskrit gloss on the Sthananga.

The Sthananga Sutra is known in Prakrit as the
Thanam. The word thanam denotes quantum.
Hence, the style of the Sthananga Sutra is unique.
It is divided into ten chapters, and each chapter
enumerates certain topics according to their
numbers. Each chapter is titled as a Thana.
(Sanskrit: Sthana)

Diverse topics such as the Dharmakathanuyoga, Carananuyoga,
Karananuyoga and Dravyanuyoga
are covered.

While the focus is on Karananuyoga, this unique
Agama serves as a huge anthology to all branches
of Jain knowledge.

This edition of the Sthananga Sutra has the original
Prakrit text, as well as a simple translation in both
Hindi and English. In addition, there is an elaboration
in both Hindi and English of each Prakrit sutra.

The editors have referred to the editions by Muni
Jambuvijaya, Acarya Atmarama, Pt. Hiralal Sastri and
Acarya Mahaprajña.

Thus, the book is easy to read, well edited and
competently translated into English by Surendra Bothra.

The book comes in two volumes, and has 31 beautiful
paintings in full colour, printed on art paper. The cover
itself is a work of art. All in all, an excellent addition to
the library of the scholar as well as the lay reader.

This and other books in Sanskrit and Prakrit are
available with us.

We sell books all over the world and accept payment
by card.

best wishes,
Yashodhar Modi
