There will be a free jazz/pops concert this Sunday June 9th at 8 PM at
Kennesaw State University outdoors at the Gazebo. This week the program
is The League of Decency "A-Train to Night Train". Sometimes there's
dancing on the brick area in front of the band when the music suggests
it.
http://www.kennesaw.edu/arts/STARLIGHT_CONCERTS/Starlight_2002_schedule.
html

We're planning to take a picnic dinner and juggle on the lawn starting
about 6:45 PM. Come enjoy the music and fun.

Hope to see you there!

Joyce

P.S. For those of you who haven't been to the concerts before, here are
two maps (gazebo is #28) http://www.kennesaw.edu/maps/ To get there
from Atlanta, take I-75 north to the Chastain Rd. exit 271. (It's the
next exit after Towne Center Mall exit at Barratt Pkwy.) Turn left on
Chastain Road and take the second right. Wind through the university to
the north end of campus and you'll see the gazebo (and probably hear the
band warming up). There's plenty of nearby free parking. They are
doing some construction near the gazebo so you have to go around that.

I'm out again this week with back trouble. I've been leading an
anhedonic existence, but hope to be healthy next week. Getting a lot of
recreational coding done 'cause I can't do much else.

Meanwhile, I've posted Judy's excellent "What to do in Woods Hole"
essay, as well as specific directions to the house.

Oops. Let us try that again, this time with feeling:

  Charles,

My name is J.P. Buck and I am the Coordinating Producer with the new Fox
Competitive Talent Show, 30 Seconds To Fame. I am going to be holding
an audition in Atlanta at the Embassy Suites Centennial Olympic Park on
Tuesday, June 11th and would like to spread the word throughout the arts
community. Our show is searching for singers, dancers, jugglers,
comedians, extreme athletes and variety/specialty acts of all types. Do
you have any suggestions on groups to contact in Atlanta and could you
spread the word amongst your group?

Here is a description of the show:

30 Seconds To Fame is a new Fox primetime competitive talent show which
will air this summer on Wednesdays at 8 PM beginning July 17. Each
episode will pit approximately 24 acts of diverse talents in 2 rounds of
competition. Each round will allow the acts only 30 seconds in which to
display their talent(s) for the audience. After the first round, the
AUDIENCE will decide which acts advance and which one will win up to
$25,000. The goal of each performer should be to showcase the most
impressive parts of their acts into the time allotted and to leave the
audience wanting more.

Thanks,
J.P. Buck

We had a nice evening at the concert. A few were delayed by the
accident but no one in our group was involved. Laura, David, Jay, Andy
and I (plus non-juggling friends Gordon and Marvin) enjoyed the music,
danced a bit and juggled too. Then we hot tubbed afterwards at our
house for several hours (with wonderful foot and shoulder massages!)
Plan to come join us at the next concert on June 30th.

Subject: How about a Juggling Rueda?
bobbbler
Send Email Send Email

It just dawned on me, after months of dancing rueda, that we could do
the same thing juggling.

Dan, do you have any ideas on this? Has this been done before?

This juggling-rueda would be different from typical four and five
people juggling patterns, in that calls would be made to do different
tricks synchronously.

My inital ideas are that the caller could throw a double and use the
free hand to make the calls (why not get in the habit of signals,
since then juggling this to loud music would be optional).

I've never been the trick master, and I have trouble knowing whats a
hard move or not. But I think we can come up with a list of
trick-calls (and eventually get them in the right difficulty level).

If you have ideas to add to the list, please add them in with these
below (so we can have all the moves in one place as we develop a
list). I know I will not be able to go back and pick out individual
emails (just too busy).

Anyone have any opinions on sissy beats? I've always hated them
(even when I was a beginner). My opinion is to cut them out entirely
to aviod confusion (unless a specific trick, like drop backs, requires
it). Sissy beats can still be used during initial learning of a new
move (but I think we should get away from it in regular juggling..
because its confusing... and habit formimg).

So, ofter the caller throws the double, everyine throws the trick (if
there are no... objections, LOL).

------------------------
J1_RUEDA CALLS_4cnt
------------------------

SIMPLE TRIPPLE:
HAND SIGNAL: 1 & 3rd finger pointing up...
Everyone throws a self tripple, and spreads out clubs in a
kaliedoscope-like pattern (my spell check cant spell it either
randy).

DOUBLE TRIPPLE:
2nd & 3rd finger up...
Everyone throws a crossing double, then a tripple (in the normal
way).

BIG CIRCLE
HAND SIGNAL: big circle...
Left double followed by large circle with club in free hand.

---------------------------
J2_RUEDA CALLS_4cnt
---------------------------

CHOP
SIGNAL = CHOP...
Everyone throws a chop.

SIMPLE FLOURISH
SIGNAL = Flourish wave...
Everyone throws left double, then flourished the other club.

TRIPPLE TRIPPLES
SIGNAL = shaking 3 fingers
Everyone throws three tripples in a row in a 2-count rhythm.

DOUBLE DOUBLE
SIGNAL = Shaking two fingers...
Everyone throws a left self double (as a club is coming to you from
the other person), then after a pause, pass a straight double from the
right.

***
I'm wondering if we can throw the 2-club sync throw out of a 2-count,
and have it even out (I think it will work if everyone does it at the
same time).

Hey, this is a really interesting idea. I'm about healed, but will be
out this Thurs for a prior commitment. I hope to try it next week
though!

Of course, without the sissy beat I'd be completely confused and have to
stop juggling to count on my fingers for a while (heh).

What a great party!!! Bruce had really worked hard to turn his back yard into a
idyllic lake-side park with the cobblestone style patio he made, complete with a
"porch" swing and hammock. There was boating on his lake, and tiki torches lit
the woods.

The skydiving planned for the afternoon was cancelled due to weather (not
whether Bruce would actually jump!) so the keg of really decent beer was tapped
early! Hot dogs and chicken were grilled, and the refreshments were not the
ordinary chips and cheezie dips but extraordinary home-made spinich, artichoke,
& salsa dips. Andy Ford's wife couldn't come but she sent home-made pecan pie
and quiche even the real men ate! Matte flowed as it should.

Jugglers, Care Clowns, Mimes and Friends came from all over town. Childhood
friends of Bruce's earlier days in Jacksonville drove up for the party! We all
agreed even at 50 Bruce is still the same kid!

There were gag "over the hill" gifts, and serious garden gifts, and several of
the AJA pooled their resources and gave Bruce a roller coaster model that will
be 6' big and really work when he constructs it.

As the evening progressed there were children swimming in the hot tub, adult
children juggling in the living room, and lots of people enjoying the cool night
air on the patio by the lake.

Nice guy, nice friends, nice party!

According to Greek mythos, July is the Goddess of cooking (the Greeks had a
God or Goddess for everything). Every year, during Her month, the ancient
Greeks would sacrifice different types of meat (pork, beef, fowl, fish) to
the great Goddess by throwing it into a fire pit and letting it burn.

One year, according to the myth, July spoke to her high priestess and told
her that the meat, instead of being thrown directly into the fire, should
instead be turned on a giant spit (or phourk, in ancient Greek), and that
everyone should partake of the meat. This was done at the next sacrifice,
and everyone partook of the grilled meet, and the Goddess July smiled from
Mt. Olympus.

So as you are making your own sacrifices to the Goddess of Grilling this
year, I would like to wish you a...

   Happy Phourk of July!

An Alexander County Deputy pulled a car over on I-57
about 2 miles north of the Missouri state line. When
the Deputy asked the driver why he was speeding, the
driver answered that he was a magician and a juggler
and he was on his way to Branson to do a show that
night and didn't want to be late.
The deputy told the driver he was fascinated by
juggling, and if the driver would do a little juggling
for him that he wouldn't give him a ticket.
The driver told the deputy that he had sent all of his
equipment on ahead and didn't have anything to juggle.
The deputy told him that he had some flares in the
trunk of his squad car and asked if he could juggle
them. The juggler stated that he could, so the deputy
got three flares, lit them and handed them to the
juggler.
While the man was doing his juggling act, a car pulled
in behind the squad car, a drunk got out and watched
the performance briefly, he then went over to the
squad car, opened the rear door and got in. The deputy
observed him doing this and went over to his squad
car,
opened the door and asked the drunk what he thought he
was doing. The drunk replied,"Might as well take me on
to jail, theres no way in hell I can pass that test."

Anyone have a handle of the cost of plane tickets, and how much the hotel is?
Somebody shoot me some URL's please (I'm not organized for travel stuff)...

I'm interested in staying -about- three days.

Subject: hotel space in Reading?

I think I've decided to go to the festival in Reading. Anyone got any
unclaimed hotel space? I'm perfectly happy on the floor. I also don't
necessarily need space for the whole week. My sister lives in Philadelphia,
so
I'll be commuting from there if I can't make other arrangements.

Greetings, all...

I assume that Horizon Theatre will be using our roofed space this evening...
Where might we be juggling, further assuming that precipitation is imminent?

> Our friends at Horizon Theatre (remember the FREE use of the theatre every
Groundhog Cabaret time?) have requested to RENT the space on three Thursdays
in July...one of which is during the IJA convention...if this is a major
problem for anyone please let me know ASAP so I can deal with the fallout.
Otherwise please let them use the space on Thursdays July 11, 18 ,& 25.

If there is going to be juggling, we start at 6:30'ish (musis starts at 8 PM).
The IJA fest starts monday, so ... is anyone still here?
