Introducing Pack-it-Back®, a National EPS & Media Recycle-By-Mail Program

Elmwood Park, NJ.  Pack-It-Back, a new program formed in Elmwood Park, NJ, was created to help address items that are traditionally “hard to recycle” such as expanded polystyrene or EPS (commonly known as Styrofoam©) and various types of media including VHS tapes, CDs/DVDs, and books, through an innovative mail back program that ensures this material gets recycled.

EPS is a lightweight packaging material that is widely used as a protection medium for boxed consumer products.  As a result of its popularity, EPS is a material that most people cannot recycle in their local programs.  This is primarily due to the fact that material is lightweight and it is very expensive to transport it to recycling facilities.  Pack-it-Back is a voluntary program allowing everyone interested in recycling EPS material to do so.

“Pack-It-Back is designed to be an easy to use program that anyone wanting to recycle traditionally ‘hard to recycle’ items can utilize to make sure the material gets to a recycling facility,” stated Bobby Kim, coordinator of Pack-It-Back’s New Jersey facility. “It provides a new, low-cost, solution that environmentally conscious people can use to recycle these items, especially where no local recycling option exists.”

Pack-It-Back breaks the recycling process down to 3 easy steps:

·         Make sure your EPS is able to be recycled.  White & Crumbly is a GO!  Anything else is a NO!  All media is acceptable.

·         Remove any paper or non-EPS plastic materials from the box, add your media in with the EPS and “Pack-It-Back” in the box your product came in.

·         Seal your box and affix the printable label from the Pack-It-Back website and bring your box to your local post office to ship.

By following these three easy steps, the EPS delivered through this program, as well as the corrugated cardboard packaging will be recycled at Pack-It-Back’s facility.  If you include the media materials in your box, please utilize the USPS Media Mail rates to send your box to Pack-It-Back.  Otherwise, for EPS only, you’ll need to use Parcel Post to ship your box.  Any boxes that are sent with insufficient postage will be refused and sent back to the Sender.

Pack-It-Back is a program of RecycleTech, based in Elmwood Park NJ with their southeast US facility located in Lakeland FL.  RecycleTech was formed in 2005 to address the issue of polystyrene recycling through technology.  The company has produced a line of equipment which shreds and processes via heat, polystyrene and other plastics into a solid ingot. RecycleTech will purchase the condensed ingot from the customer to close the loop and keep EPS out of the waste stream. With customers and plants in the US, Korea, New Zealand, Ecuador and China, RecycleTech has become the leader in polystyrene processing equipment. www.recycletechno.com
