We shouldn't deprive Dino of his fun. He'll just pay for all the taxis
instead.
Now it's a party.

actually I'm afraid I may be the youngest one on the list (17), and I've

Good luck, Will!
What, no plans for Boston anymore?
Russ
Hey Guys-
I'm leaving for Austin today (Sunday) and won't be back in town until the
evening this Tuesday. I'm going to be there auditioning for a scholarship to
Berklee College of Music. Anyhow, I thought this wouldn't be a problem, since
I have a laptop, but I remember that we only have a DSL line for this
machine. Hence, I will most likely not be able to check e-mail at all or do
any sort of online activities until that time. That doesn't mean stop
talking, or don't send issues, but it does mean that I won't be able to
interact until then. So, have fun, be good, wish me luck, and talk to you
Tuesday.

Yow! Big review, thanks Mike.
>> The Story: GL tries to stop WarWorld from falling into the sun with help
from unexpected allies who got him into the mess in the first place.
The 411: This issue starts off pretty much how I thought it would. Kyle
decides he's going to stop the planet from falling apart, no matter that he's
been beaten up and manipulated for about the entire arc.
It was nice to see some more character from Von-Lo. I don't really like the
Controllers and the fact that he was following them seemed a little strange
to me in the first place. You've got to respect that he swore fealty to them
and all, but they were just a little bit too demanding of him. <<
I characterized Von-Lo much like I did Gladiator in my Silver Surfer run at
MV1. He's incredibly loyal to those he's sworn service to, often to a fault.
>> Fatality, on the other hand just isn't that interesting to me as a
villain. She's really angry and she likes to eat people which is always
interesting, but she just gets tiring after a while. Later on in the issue
when she assaults the Khund fleet and has her encounter with the Commander
you can see her potential, but Fatality was the one dissapointing aspect of
this story to me. <<
I really wish I'd remembered the whole cannibalism aspect earlier in the arc,
because I wanted to play with it more once I did remember it. Ah well, I'd
hoped to make Fatality somewhat likeable by the end of this arc, but 'twas
not to be...
>> Everything else was very well done. I say this because Russ strings things
together perfectly. The team-up between Von-Lo and Kyle was expected, but
Russ does a good job within it of describing Von-Lo's fruitless efforts to
stop the planet and his necessity for Kyle.
Kyle being assaulted by the Khund fleet and getting hurt a bit more and the
Von-Lo having to deal with the fleet as Rayner is taken out was a good touch.
The conversation between Kyle and Fatality was nice too and I like how Russ
gave Kyle even more respectability as a hero by dealing with Fatality very
formidably even with his injuries. <<
Thanks. I was a bit worried about this scene, cause I thought Kyle's speech
sounded a little forced and cheesy. Glad it worked for you.
>> The X-Wing rebel forces were a great touch. Russ thought of a lot of
little things in this issue that really impressed me. I liked the turning of
the focus that occured when Russ went to the planet to seek the reaction of
the peoples there and the Khund fleet as well when they were being attacked
by Fatality. This was really the only time that I appreciated Fatality as a
character. When she had her fun with the Admiral. <<
Probably the most fun I had with her, too...
>> The big thing that I appreciated that Russ set up was the battle between
Von-Lo and Kyle. Russ confused me a bit when Kyle sought out whatever he was
seeking as the two made their final push on the planet. But Russ does a great
job revealing it and making Kyle out as a true hero in this arc. Challenging
Von-Lo and beating him with his brain was a fantastic touch to this story. As
beaten and battered as Kyle was, he still made the effort to take Von-Lo in.
Then he even looked for Fatality before heading back to Earth. Good show,
Russ.
Fatality sneaking aboard the Controllers' ship was interesting enough, but
I'm just glad Russ let us in on exactly what the Controllers' secret for the
challenge between Fatality and Kyle was. Interesting idea to make a "guardian
of the universe". Looks like the Controllers are going to pay for all their
annoying meddling though. <<
This last one felt like my biggest failure for the arc, frankly. Exposition
is so damn hard to weave into a story without it feeling like exposition,
even under the best of circumstances. This wasn't the best of circumstances,
and after I finished it, it felt like I should have named that scene
"Explanation Time".
>> The epilogues were contrasting, just because the first was not so strong
and the second definitely was. The Donna Troy/Kyle thing just seemed a little
tacked on. The second epilogue was fascinating. I did not expect it at all
and you can tell Russ put some major thought into it before he did it. Don't
really want to mention it here. Everybody should go read this issue. The
final part alone is worth it. <<
I knew that last epilogue would raise eyebrows, but I was pretty happy with
the Kyle/Donna reunion too. Probably because I'm such a softy... :-)
>> My Final Answer: As I said, the final part of the story makes reading it
very much worth it. Russ focuses strongly on action and the character of
Kyle, and what makes a better superhero story than that? Go read this now. <<
Thanks for the kind review, Mike.
Russ
when I tried to look at this story, it wasn't there. What is the proper
address?

Thanks Mike. I'm glad you voice your opinions, and I'm pleased with a lot of what I read. And trust me, when I write from the Batman's perspective next issue, some of your concerns will be dealt with.
But on one of them, I did explicitly state that the Batman implied would give Catwoman back her stuff. Heck, he might have just given her a list of all the places he'd returned them too. And, of course, he would have already informed those places to expect robberis:)
....Is up on the JLU board. Don't squirm, Steve, it's not as bad as you think. I posted it there rather than here because there are spoilers, so if you haven't read Batman #5 yet...don't look.
....Is up on the JLU board. Don't squirm, Steve, it's not as bad as you think. I posted it there rather than here because there are spoilers, so if you haven't read Batman #5 yet...don't look.
<< On a related note to the updates, are we still doing this? I know that a
couple of the guys had mentioned what they would do for the issue, and before
I do or do don't write anything, I was wondering if it was still happening.
Since Steve and James both seem insistent that I write "Hellblazer" -- not
for this, but, like, in general -- I have a vague idea of what I would do for
this, if we're still doing it. Anybody? >>
Sorry (again) that it took a while to respond to this...I read it once
whenever it was first sent, saved it with the intention of writing back
quickly, and then just left it in my mailbox.
As to the subject at hand: Yes, we are still doing the Christmas Special --
Assuming that I know I'll have enough stories for it. I'm looking at a
December 20th deadline for the stories to be turned in (although that may be
pushed around a bit, depending on what happens). I'm very much open to
letting people use characters I have in "JLA" that aren't in their own series
right now, and would encourage all of you to be willing to maybe swamp
characters with someone (that is, of course, unless you have a good idea for
your title character already). I plan on writing a JLA Christmas story, and
if for some reason I have time, maybe another one with less characters.
Oh, and Mike? Please, for the love of all that's (un)holy, write Constantine.
I don't care if it's for this or just in general or just.....Please. Really.
Please.

Here you are, everyone -- These issues have been posted, and will be

and SHOWCASE, I'll hold off on announcing these to the Heroes list for the
time being. Also, I'm just winging the blurb stuff right now to save it for
the site and Heroes. If you want to add blurbs to your own stuff, though,
that's fine with me!

okay, guys I was just kidding, this was part of an ellaborate joke on Mike McGee. But I figured the list were sort of unlively anyway, so I didn't think any harm. Sorry for any inconvience. And yes well that means you still have to post #2 & #3.
I'm writting this e-mail to make official my retirement from the world of fanfiction. I have recently discovered that fanfic hasn't done anything for me I couldn't have done by myself. The only reason I enjoyed writting Plastic Man for JLU, and Voice and Suds for MV1 is because I made the characters my own (and in V&S's case they were). So I have decided to go out on my own, with my own characters. I would like to thank Mike McGee for helping me come to this relization. Mike you are a true friend. So, Goodbye everybody, it was wonderful knowing all of you, I will continue to read your stuff and give feedback. Expect to hear big things of me soon.
>>I have recently discovered that fanfic hasn't done anything for me I couldn't have done by myself.<<
I'm not really sure what you expected it to do for you, other than provide you with some always-useful practice and a fun time. If you didn't receive either of these, I'm sorry to hear that.
Regardless, good luck in your future endeavors, James.

Everyone-
Seems like I start off all of my messages here with apologies...The
Thanksgiving holiday's been pretty busy for me, as have been the past few
months, and I haven't been keeping with my commitments here at JLU very well.
However, there WILL be an update, of sorts, tonight.
I've recently purchased a new scanner and am also transferring files from my
old computer to my new one. In the process, I've decided to revamp the JLU
site again -- Not a full re-do like last time, but a makeover to make it
generally more attractive and actually WORKING correctly. I've already
started this, and while most of it won't take too long, it won't be done for
a bit. What I'm going to do is upload the new issues I have and post the
addresses in messages here and on Heroes so all can read them. Then, when the
new site is up (and it really shouldn't be TOO long), we'll have them (and
any other new issues, if there are any) announced on there. So, consider the
current JLU site just a stagnant window to yesterday.
Concerning new issues, I have most of them and HTMLing them as I write this.
However, it's been so long since I recieved most of them, some have
dissapeared from my mail box. If the authors of the following issues could
resend them to me, I would be much obliged, and I apologize for having you do
that over again:
-BATMAN #5 by Steve Crosby
-SHOWCASE 2001 #4 (JSA) by Gary Dreslinski
I'll have the other issues HTMLed and up tonight, waiting a little bit to
announce them to give time for the others to be sent in. If I don't get them
soon tonight, I'll just announce the ones I do still have, and announce these
other two as I get them (which might be posted with JLA #5, once it's done).
So, get ready for activity again, for God's sake!
Your Public Defender,
-Will Short
WeekapaugB@...
