J.C. Philpot was born in 1802. He was elected a fellow at Worcester College, Oxford. He left the Church of England and resigned his fellowship in 1835, and from then until his death in 1869 he remained with the Strict Baptists. He was the pastor at Stamford and Oakham from 1838 until 1864, when ill-health made it necessary for him to move to Croydon for the last five years of his life. For over twenty years he was the editor of "The Gospel Standard" magazine, which is still published each month. Twelve volumes of his sermons are in print. You can read about the life of J.C. Through Baca's Vale (first published in 1893) and its companion book, Ears from Harvested Sheaves (first published in 1884), are two volumes of selected daily readings taken from the sermons and writings of J.C. Philpot. Although the readings are very spiritual, they are also practical and include vital aspects of the Christian's pathway and have been made encouraging and helpful to many. Both of these books can be purchased from Gospel Mission, Box 318 Choteau, MT 59422, and elsewhere.
