John,

Your J-28 could be of interest.  I have written you direct to provide a rundown on what I need to determine interest.  Hunting for the “next” boat is always process difficult process for me  separating what I want from what I need in the new boat.

Bill

All,
Anyone happen to have an extra holding tank in good shape (which would be weird
I admit), or have the dimensions of the holding tank? Thanks.

I bought a used chute but might want another. What color is the chute (my other
sails are UK) how much would you like for it and the pole? Where are you
located?

I purchased Le Soleil late last summer after a second very thorough survey.
Small areas of delamination at the port chainplate and a small area outside the
starboard genoa track. All other areas were ruled out.The boat has been one
pleasant surprise after another as everything worked on the boat the first time
it was tried. She sails beautifully. I need to fiddle with the Tacktick sending
unit is about all. She is now in fresh water on Lake George in New York.

How did  you address the delamination at the chainplates

I am about to tackle that problem with Smiths CPES, looking for other ideas

Glad you like the boat...she was my sister ship in Black Rock CT!

I have not tackled it yet. The surveyor suggested to make sure no more moisture
could get to those areas, so that is all I have done so far. I am thinking of
going in from underneath rather than cut into the deck nonskid.

Thanks, I saved the 3 pics of the boat up on stands. I have not put up the
canvas over the cockpit, so that showed me how it looks deployed. Any shots of
the boat sailing?

If any of you racers are looking to buy a Sailcomp 103 set up, shoot me an
email. I have one I don't use since I don't race. The Sailcomp has a mast
mount bracket. I also have an extra remote key pad control I would sell
separately if someone needs just a keypad control.

I had hull number 62 hauled last week to clean the bottom as we start racing
next weekend and the yard advised that we must have stray current in the area as
my prop was severely pitted and the anodes were gone. We put two on last
summer. He said it was "pink" when he hauled it out.

Any recommendations on replacement wheels? I have seen some posts where some
are too much, but what is just right?

Call Gary at Martec.

I think the original prob on the boat was a 16X14 and he recommeded a16X12 and its perfect.
My diesel spins up to 3400 rpm no problem, reverse is very good.

there is very lttle prop walk if you accelerate slowly, but if u rev the engine in reverse you get a nice amount,
My marina is pretty tight and with a combination of foreward and reverse and rudder, i can spin the boat in a little over its own length (cockwise)

I priced out the gori and the martec was much cheaper, about 400 dollars...there tons of barnacles where I am, and a geared prop was not a good idea

If you want to save a few dollars, I have 1sX14 the original prop size.  My boat came with a totally awful fixed HUGE three blade prop
I bought this one on ebay and it needs to be balanced ( I found this out after the boat was in the water, and ended up biting the bullet and buying a new one)

This one is just slighly out of balance, but I was worried about a whole season so I changed it, I would sell it for less than what I paid and you could have martec or your local yard balance it.

If money is not an issue, then go to martec. I can only say great things about them and their service

Anyone sailing in salt water found good ways to keep barnacles, etc. off the

there is something better. Thanks.

I would highly recommend the Petit products.

I am in in an "extremely fertile" harbor and the growth is unbelievable.  The fist year I had my boat, I was hiring a diver every week to week and a half to get teh crap off the bottom and the shaft, i still do later in the season.
I put on a healthy coat of Petit SR 90 ablative bottom paint last year and had almost nothing on the bottom untill September. (I am told that the bottom paint companies use my harbor to test new products...no joke, we have warm water from the incinerator and power plant, the local treatment plant recyles water into it, and there is an old land  up river...sounds romantic huh!  LOL)

Anyone sailing in salt water found good ways to keep barnacles, etc. off the prop and shaft? I'm going to try Pettit's zinc barnacle barrier paint unless there is something better. Thanks.

Thanks guys. I was tempted to try the hot lanolin, but since I had the Pettit
zinc paint on hand I decided to try it. I will let everyone know how this paint
seems to work keeping barnacles, etc. off the prop later this year.

Hello all

Anxiously awaiting spring here and in full speed mode to make some repairs and
get the boat cleaned up for launch in mid april... assuming it will stop snowing
in CT at somepoint.

First question, has anyone here done any re-core of their decks, specifically at
the chainplate.
My sureveyor thought my decks were showing moisture from the chainplates to the
cockpit.

Bad news is a lot of SOAKED rotted core, around the stb chainplate and a litte
on the port side
but the rest of the deck is bone dry. I have the hanging locker out and am
GOING IN, from underneath. Does anyone know what thickness the balsa to use?
and tips or advice for refinishing the ceiling after this is done? The repair
is going much quicker and easier than I thought...just trying to gather as much
info from anyone that has done this. David Hastings did this repair on his boat
and has a lot of good ideas i can forward if anyone else is "in the same boat"
as me :)

Second question, Any good advice re removing old 4200 from the fasteners and
deck before I re bed the the hardware?

Third question. The preovious owners used Cetol on the wood work, I have to
admit that for the past two years I have not had time to keep it up so its time
to strip off and start over. I hate the chem strippers to begin with and since
the deck is opened up and drying the use of water etc is out of the question at
the moment....any thoughts

Thinks spring....some day ill get a new genoa!

John,
Can't help with the first two questions, but on the third: you might think
about trying a heat gun and sharp scraper. I have read if you are careful with
the heat gun (not to burn the wood), this can be good way to remove the old
finish. I am going to try it on my exterior teak.

BTW - I just posted pictures of my boat (Hull #25 - rechristened "Akula"). Her
factory gelcoat color is medium grey (with red gelcoat boot and cove stripes).
The hull was heavily oxidized when I bought the boat, and I just spent days wet
sanding, compounding and polishing the gelcoat. I learned a lot in the process,
so if anyone has this type of project coming up, I might have some helpful tips.

I've always used Semco teak sealer on my top sides. It's easy to apply and maintain as it has no oil but it does require a couple of applications per season.

Google “cleaning mildew from teak”.  You will get lots of options.  One that looks good is a product sold by “Marine Store”  It’s a product called Teak Guard.  Looks like it might be an easy solution.  However the Google response give you a number of others  as well.

Use a heat gun and peel it off. It can burn the wood if you're not careful. Sanding takes wood off with it. The heat gun worked great on my Cape Dory, and she had a lot of teak!

I hate the chem strippers to begin with and since the deck is opened up and drying the use of water etc is out of the question at the moment....any thoughts

Our boat, #62 has had an aftermarket central AC installed. We are primarily a
Thursday night fun race boat, so we haven't tried it all night, but I try to
turn it on once a month. If you would like make and model info, let me know.
The previous owner pulled the oven and put it there, with ductwork down the port
side to a vent on either side of the bulkhead. I can send pics if you like. We
live at N 31,
W 88, so we don't use the boat much between 4th of July and Labor Day.
