Clare,
I remembered seeing something on medieval settlement in Eliogarty and
managed to dig it out. I think a deed mentioned in it gives the real
answer. It dates from between 1190 and 1195:
"Theobold Walter grants to Gilbert de Kentewell and his heirs for
homage and service of the fee of five knights in Helyohokerdi, to wit
the tuath of Kenelfenelgille [Drom] - towards the east as far as the
said tuath extends towards the tuath where the castle of Durles
[Thurles] is situated, and so extending to le Bernhely [Bernane-ely]
as far as the said tuath extends; and so from the land of
Gillissehodian towards the north...to the tuath of Kerketeni
[Templemore] ...to have and to hold...etc." Curtis, Ormond Deeds
1172-1350 no 34.
Curtis identifies Kenelfenegille with the civil parish of Drom to the
NW of Thurles and bounded by the Parishes of Barnane-ely, Inch,
Kilfithmone, Killoskehan, Loughmoe West and Templemore. The paper is
C.A. Empey's "The Anglo-Norman Settlement of Eliogarty".
Hope this makes sense to you.
