Some people involved with planning California state square dance
conventions are doing an online survey:

Dear California Square Dancers:
We Need Your Help!
The California State Square Dance Convention has been an institution for
nearly 50 years. But as we all know, times and opinions change. In our
ongoing effort to make the California State Square Dance Convention the
best it can be, we need your input. We are asking each and every dancer
in the state, including our youth dancers, to complete our survey
relative to your past convention attendance, your likes and dislikes
about the current convention format, and input for future conventions.
Even if you’ve never attended the California State Square Dance
Convention, your opinion is important to us – we’d like to know what
would make it an event you WANT to attend. If you reside outside of
California, but regularly or occasionally attend the California State
Square Dance Convention, we also invite you to participate in the survey.
This is an Internet-only survey that should take you less than 5 minutes
to complete, and will offer us an invaluable amount of input. To
participate in the survey, click on the link below and follow the
instructions. We invite each dancer in the household to complete their
own survey, but ask each dancer to complete the survey only ONCE.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=xc65IsLEV4vqayxdCh_2fOIA_3d_3d
Please forward this survey link to every dancer you know and ask them to
pass it along to their dancing friends. The more input we get, the more
focused our efforts can be to make the California State Convention the
event you want it to be. Survey responses will be accepted until
midnight on Saturday, July 11, 2009.
Respectfully,
Bonnie Abramson & Bob Kamuf
Co-Chairmen
On behalf of the California Square Dance Council, Convention Advisory
Committee

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ed Zeigler<sfsqdancer@...> Date: Mon, Jun 8, 2009 at 5:17 PM Subject: Midnight Squares Class Survey To: Bay Area Square Dancers!
Interested in moving up to the next level or retaking a level you are rusty at? Midnight Squares is planning on starting classes in late October. To determine the interest there is in the bay area for the Advanced and Challenge program classes, we are conducting a survey. So if you are interested in taking or re-taking a class with Midnight Squares in San Francisco, please give us your feed back in the survey on the link below. Angels are also always welcome, so let us know. Please feel welcome to forward this e-mail to anyone else whom may be interested.
It is with deep sadness and shock that I must forward to you the news
that our caller, John Sybalsky, passed away this Monday evening. I just
spoke with Betsy. She anticipates that there will be a celebration of
life event in our area as well as one on the East Coast, but the dates
for these have not yet been determined.
The announced Square Dance Celebration for the Life of Bill Davis Hoedown to be held at John Muir Middle School on March 29, 2009 is a NO CHARGE get together of dancers and non-dancers to celebrate the life of our wonderful square dance caller, Bill Davis. I drafted the Hoedown flyer and I guess the square dancers are tuned into paying unless a flyer specifically states "FREE". Please impress upon all square dancers that this is a FREE square dance hoedown. Thank you!
As most of you know by now that our distinguished square dance caller and teacher has died on January 28, 2009. It is his wish to have "A Dance Celebrating the Life of Bill Davis." We have finally secured a venue, John Muir Middle School. All the details are explained on the attachments to this email. They have been distilled to PDF so that anyone with Adobe Reader can open these attachments. I am also including the Bio of Bill Davis which Bobbie Davis has provided. I am using the email but I certainly do not have all the addresses so I am requesting that Callers and Dancers to talk it up at your dances so that the coverage of this dance will be enormous. I thank you in advance for your help.

Please note the following info about Jubilee dancing, sent from Mary...
There are many other sessions being offered throughout the weekend - a total of over 100 hours of dancing, including lots of C1 for our friends in the newly trained Interlocked class. For full schedule details and online registration, go to
Discounts are available for the full package as well as for individual session prices if you buy before Sept 30.
Fannie and I are helping our daughter welcome her second baby, so cannot attend, this year. What a great lineup of callers they have managed to schedule!
I am writing this to you all because, with the press of Jubilee coming up in less than 3 weeks, I may not see you again at Top Cats during that time, and I wanted to make sure you had the following information. If you've already received the information, I apologize for the duplication.
We have expanded our C3A and C3B offerings, and added a C4 session to this year's program. I'd love to see as many of you at these sessions as possible.
The Jubilee will be held October 12-14, 2007 at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. The high-level sessions this year are:
Friday Night: C3A 8-9 pm Rob French and John Sybalsky C3B 9-10 pm John Sybalsky and Barry Clasper
Sunday afternoon: C3A 1-2:30 pm Barry Clasper C3B 3-4:30 pm Barry Clasper and John Sybalsky C4 6-8 pm Barry Clasper and John Sybalsky
Please let me know if you plan to attend any of these sessions so I can arrange for the correct size room, or cancel a session if there is not enough planned attendance. (At this point in time I do not expect to cancel any of these sessions but knowing about more dancers is always important and helpful with a dance population as small as ours, as you all know.)

Hi Don and Fannie,
We heard a rumor that the Mesa dance was canceled, and sent
Steckman's a message this morning to confirm. This is their reply:
Hi, just a real quick answer as we have to leave here. Yes, it has
been cancelled as there wasn't sufficient registrations. Will try
again for next year about the same time of the year BUT will need to
have a deadline as most dancers thought they could just come in and
register and it won't work that way for the hotel, etc.
See you soon in Mesa. Thanks for inquiring. Joan/John

Since we don't have the e-mails for interlock squares/class, and
several were thinking of coming down can you get this message out? I
sure don't want anyone to get stuck with plane tickets that they
can't exchange. I think the hotels reservations will be less of a
problem.
Thanks,
Lois & Jack

REMINDER...
We are dancing at the Santa Clara County Fair this Thursday, Aug 2...
EARLY START --- 5:00pm

Joe Dehn has forwarded the following FAQ's, many folks will want to know...
(Thanks, Joe!)
=================================
DANCING AT THE FAIR
1-5 August 2007
Information for Club Dancers
What is this event?
It is the Santa Clara County Fair. Yes, an actual county fair, with
animals and carnival rides and all that. The Fair has changed its
emphasis over the years with the shift in the county's economy, but
there are still cows and rabbits, rides, and other amusements.
What are we doing there?
Square dancers have been part of the Santa Clara County Fair for
decades. The format of the Fair has varied, but we've been there one
way or another every year. We have fun dancing while at the same time
being part of the "show" for other Fair visitors.
Is our club going dark this week? NO, just changing venue...
Pretty much every club in the county that normally dances on one of the
Fair nights will be dancing at the Fair this week (see list on the web
page). Don't think of it as "going dark" -- we're just dancing in a
different place, sort of like a "Fifth Wednesday" (Thursday, Friday,
whatever).
How do we get into the Fair to dance?
Dancers participating in our program can enter the Fair without charge.
You will need to enter through the Administration building -- see the
map on the web page. If you have a badge from one of the participating
clubs, that will be enough. (Interlocked Squares is on the list.)
What about people who don't belong to one of these clubs or don't have a
badge?
Square dancers are welcome to be part of this activity regardless of
club affiliation. We are providing the Fair with a list of names of
additional participants, so they can get in without charge as well. To
be included on this list, see the instructions on the web page. (If you
want to be included, please let us know right away -- the list will be
turned in to the Fair on Tuesday.)
How about parking?
Parking, unfortunately, is not free. You can park in the Fair lots for
$8. You may want to consider carpooling. Park in the lot across Tully
Road to make it easy to get to the Administration building.
Where, exactly, do we dance?
We dance outdoors, on a slab in front of "Exposition Hall" (being used
this year for the commercial exhibits). For those who have done this
before, it's the same place as always. This slab was actually built by
square dancers many years ago specifically for this purpose! If you
haven't been there before, see the map on the web page.
So is this a demo, club dancing, or what?
It's really three things combined:
1) It's our regular weekly dancing.
2) It's part of the "show" for the Fair.
3) It's a chance to let the public know about square dancing.
How can we promote square dancing at the Fair?
Just by being there you will be helping promote square dancing -- many
people don't even realize our activity exists! But we'll be doing more
than that. We will have introductory tips where people who have never
done any square dancing can try it out. We will have flyers for the
fall classes. Another thing you can do is simply talk to the people who
come over to see what we are doing -- let them know what you like about
square dancing and encourage them to sign up for information about classes.
What's the schedule?
Each night we'll have a mix of activities in a continuous "no break"
format. That means as soon as one "tip" ends something else will start
-- we want something going on for Fair visitors to see at all times.
(That doesn't mean any dancer is expected to dance continuously! You
can take a break whenever you like.) The mix will depend on the clubs
that are participating on a particular night. Every night there will be
Plus tips, intro tips, and rounds. Some nights there will tips at other
levels. On Friday and Saturday there will be some tips called by youth
callers.
When does it start?
We plan to start the "no break" format for square dancing at 6:30pm each
night (running until 9:30pm). On Friday and Saturday, we'll be starting
around 6:00pm, and on Wednesday and Thursday we'll be starting at
5:00pm. This earlier portion may not be "no break" -- it will depend on
how many people are there. But if you can come early, please do!
What should we wear?
You can wear whatever you would normally wear on club night. If you
want to wear "square dance clothes", that's fine. If you want to wear
regular clothes, that's fine too. A mix of clothing will let people
know that there are clubs that will welcome them either way.
Where is that web page mentioned several times above?
