You are aware that our next meeting will be on December 10 at the Arlington Fairfax Jewish Congregation.
In order to bring to this meeting some specific ideas for the interfaith service on Martin Luther King Day in January 2003, there will be a preliminary meeting on December 9 for those who wish to work on the planning and organizing of the MLK service. The meeting will be held at 7:30 pm at the home of Carolyn Gretzinger, 2330 14th Street, North, Apt 204, Arlington; tel (703) 243-5653. Carolyn's home is behind the Arlington Courthouse Plaza near the Courthouse Metro station.
There is little time remaining to plan for a MLK service. That is why this special meeting has been called. Only those who wish to be involved in the service need attend. Alternatively, you could send me any comments or suggestions you have for the event.
To hold a successful service, we need individuals to take charge of several key tasks. These include:
1. Identification of a church or faith congregation to host the service.
2. Planning of the liturgy for the service.
3. Organization of the physical arrangements at the service.
I believe that the larger Interfaith Committee will be able to organize the participation of faith groups and the planning of publicity. However, the above three tasks are crucial and must be taken on immediately.
Please let me (and Carolyn) know if you plan to attend the meeting on December 9.
And remember to keep December 10 open for the regular meeting of the Interfaith Committee.
Peace,
Dennis Warner

Dear folks,
I've gotten an email from SALSA - The "Social Action and Leadership School

Two Native American (aka Indian) teachers of the Native Youth Alliance are
in town and available to people in schools, congregations, community
groups, etc. The Native Youth Alliance has been actively preserving and
sharing native history, traditions, spirit and culture - especially among
young people - since 1990.
A more detailed announcement will follow over the weekend. We look forward
to helping share their knowledge with the community.

Dear folks,
There's an interesting and valuable intercultural activity in town: The DC
International Connection, organized by host Tony Young-Prencipe. The basic
activity is twice-monthly social networking nights, each with an
international theme and one or more international speakers - along with
introductions, schmoozing and networking, and free food. Those on the
mailing list create and share events of their own. Tony says:
"The DC International Connection is a unique social & cultural exchange
email and webpage bulletin board to encourage hospitality by allowing all
who are signed up to send out socials to the entire group. This service is
free on the agreement that those sharing events reach out to be welcoming
to all people who attend. This is particularly good for folks who are new
to the Washington DC metro area and want to get connected to safe people.
All events must be generally moral in nature and first be approved by the
DC International Connection administrator. There is no charge for this
service except a genuine heart to reach out to others in a warm manner. We
are in the trial stage and will most likely impose safeguards of
accountabilty to those holding events."
Recent evenings (which last from 7:30 to 11 PM, first and third Saturdays)
have had Islam and Iran as their themes. Participants range in age from
college students - many from overseas - into the sixties, and perhaps
beyond. Recently there have been people from Turkey, Russia, Sweden,
India, Pakistan, China, Germany, Taiwan, Iran, Ecuador, Japan, El Salvador,
Ethiopia, Palestine, Mexico - and probably more!
These events take place upstairs at The Common Grounds Cafe, right next to
St. Charles Borromeo in Clarendon. The main emphasis is in-person, but
Tony has also furnished us with web page and email group to support that
contact. Visit the DCIC web page at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DC_International_Connection/
Tony has provided us with a wonderful resource, and I recommend it. It's
one more reason to be thankful for living in an area where you can
practically roam the world within a few miles' radius. Enjoy!
Warmly,
Charlie Stevenson

I'm with Imam Johari. Sounds like a plan! One qualm: do we really need another acronym? I think the point gets across just fine with Faith In Action, unless the name's already taken.

While I'm new to the group; have only attended one meeting and am
completely unfamiliar with the group's history, I would like to add to this
discussion!
Would it be a good idea to keep the group's identification as simple,
direct, and specific to our mission and purpose as it is now? There should
be something concrete in the name that reflects and describes our central,
distinguishing work - and "interfaith" does it for me. We know who we are,
but let's not assume that the public does - and should they not have
something specific to easily search for and recognize us by? How else will
they pick us out, in the vast forest of faith organizations?
There might be some reason to change the name, logo, motto, etc. - but
would it not help to include the term "interfaith" at any point where
others would look for, and see it?

Charlie Stevenson

Hello,
As follow-up to our discussion at last Thursday's
meeting regarding a (permanent) name for our Committee, I wish to offer an idea
for your consideration.
We might call ourselves: "FAITH IN
ACTION" (and the word "ACTION" stands for "Arlingtonians
Collaborating Together in Interfaith Outreach Now")
In addition, given that several people expressed
an interest in keeping the same logo for our permanent Committee that was
developed for the September 11 Interfaith Service (3 candles surrounded by the
words - "Empowered by Faith, United in Hope"), I would like to
suggest that we add a "motto" that would appear underneath the
Committee name on publicity, etc. A proposed motto is:
"Lighting the way to a Brighter Future"
Thus, the proposed name and motto (as they would
appear with the logo on Committee correspondence and publicity)would be:
FAITH IN ACTION Lighting the way to a Brighter Future
By offering this initial idea, I hope to "get
the ball rolling" and invite each of you to improve upon this and/or come
up with other ideas for a permanent Committee name.
Thanks! Carolyn

Committee correspondence and publicity)would be:
FAITH IN ACTION
Lighting the way to a Brighter Future
By offering this initial idea, I hope to "get the ball rolling" and invite
each of you to improve upon this and/or come up with other ideas for a
permanent Committee name.
Thanks!
Carolyn

Hi Larry,
I have been looking for the address for a Bob Bayer from your church, who
has expressed interest in joining the VA Interfaith Center for Public
Policy, which I chair. Could you help?
Thanks, Gerry Creedon

Hello,
As follow-up to our discussion at last Thursday's meeting regarding a
(permanent) name for our Committee, I wish to offer an idea for your
consideration.
We might call ourselves: "FAITH IN ACTION" (and the word "ACTION" stands for
"Arlingtonians Collaborating Together in Interfaith Outreach Now")
In addition, given that several people expressed an interest in keeping the same
logo for our permanent Committee that was developed for the September 11
Interfaith Service (3 candles surrounded by the words - "Empowered by Faith,
United in Hope"), I would like to suggest that we add a "motto" that would
appear underneath the Committee name on publicity, etc. A proposed motto is:
"Lighting the way to a Brighter Future"
Thus, the proposed name and motto (as they would appear with the logo on
Committee correspondence and publicity)would be:
FAITH IN ACTION
Lighting the way to a Brighter Future
By offering this initial idea, I hope to "get the ball rolling" and invite each
of you to improve upon this and/or come up with other ideas for a permanent
Committee name.
Thanks!

USING THE ARLINGTON INTERFAITH LIST
(Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002)
WELCOME to the email discussion list for the Arlington Interfaith Planning
Council! This list was organized in November 2002 to support the
activities, information, plans, and conversations of that group. It's
designed to be easy to operate; if you have any questions, please feel free
to contact the list steward.
To reach everyone on the list, simply send your mail to:
interplan@yahoogroups.com .
SCOPE: While this group is focused on the original mission of the Council,
its members are probably engaged in a wider range of additional interests
and activities. Visit the Geotrees home page to begin exploring the larger
intercultural world, and to share your interests and activities with the
region as a whole:
www.geotrees.com/ .
Suggestions for improving the list are always welcome.
BASIC OPERATING INFORMATION is given below.
MEMBERS consist of anyone on the Council who wishes to be on the list.
HOW IT WORKS: Members can mail freely to the list at any time, at this
address:
interplan@yahoogroups.com.
Your mails sent to this address will go to all the members of the list.
ATTACHMENTS: You may send attachments to the group using the list. Note
that not everyone may have the software needed to open certain types of
attachment, and that large attachments of any kind may take a long time to
retrieve. Plain text attachments of limited length are recommended; for
large attachments, you may wish to ask interested readers to get back to
you first.
If there is a continuing need, I'll set up a web page for very long files.
A large (20 Meg) file-space is also available to us on Yahoo.
SUBSCRIPTIONS: To unsubscribe from this group at any time, send a blank
email to:
interplan-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com.
To subscribe, send a blank email to:
interplan-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
If you are changing addresses or providers, we recommend unsubscribing from
your old address first, and then resubscribing with the new. This prevents
multiple addresses and mailings.
PRIVACY and SPAM: This group will be as secure and spam-free as possible.
The membership list is secure and will not be shared; messages and
membership enrollments will be moderated and screened for potential spam.
ARCHIVING YOUR MAILS: We recommend keeping a complete archive of all your
mails, incoming and outgoing. Yahoo keeps an archive of posted messages,
but places advertising onto each email stored on their server. Keeping
your own archive will avoid this problem.
TECH SUPPORT: To contact the List Steward, send email to:
anjinsan@....
For Yahoo support, or to become a Yahoo member, contact:

This is a test to see if the new discussion group, "InterPlan," is up and
running. This group was organized to support the Arlington Interfaith
Planning Committee. "How To" details are on the way.

Hello,
The moderator of the arlington_ifpc group has changed the group's name.
This means that both the group's email address and the group home page
location have changed.
The group email address:
InterPlan@yahoogroups.com
The group home page location:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/InterPlan
If you have links which point to this group or an address book entry
for the group, you should update them, as the old addresses will no
longer work.
