Indian Comics Irregular #207
The big Native-themed summer release was "Cowboys and Aliens," starring Harrison
Ford and Daniel Craig. Alas, Indians went from being partners in the original
graphic novels to sidekicks in the movie.

"Lone Ranger" on the Rocks
Disney slammed the brakes on its "Lone Ranger" remake after the budget soared to
$250 million. That may be a good thing, since the movie's "Native spirituality"
reportedly included werewolves and Wendigos.

Winnetou to Ride Again?
In other Western news, a German group is trying to revive the Winnetou series of
films. Since Winnetou was a stereotypical "big chief" Apache, I hope the remake
will diverge from the source material.

Another Casting Controversy
Johnny Depp as Tonto isn't the only casting controversy in Indian country.
Brandon Routh ("Superman Returns") was tapped for the lacrosse movie "Crooked
Arrows" because he has a smidgen of Native "blood."

I finally posted my criticism of "Avatar," another movie that was basically
about "cowboys 'n' Indians." You can see what I said at
http://www.bluecorncomics.com/avatar.htm . My conclusion: "Avatar" was
visually impressive but about as deep as a children's book.
