From "Half Light", by Tippi N. Blevins

Swain loved the sea at dawn. It was different at dusk somehow.
Watching the sun slip back into the ocean made him think of
surrender. Like the light had given up and night had won. He
preferred to see the sun pressing up through that silvery shroud of
distant waves, escaping into the sky higher and higher. He could
only watch it for a few moments before seeking shelter, though, and
that wasn't enough. Not by a long shot. That would change, though.
Eventually.

He reached for the remote control and turned off the TV. The image
of the rising sun seemed to linger on the screen for a moment before
fading. He rewound the tape for its next viewing and crossed the
room to the apartment's one window.

The apartment was crap. Much too small, and there lingered a smell
of Thai food from a restaurant that had once occupied the first floor
but went out of business a year ago or more. The odor of peppers and
fish sauce haunted the building like a restless ghost. But the place
had a window, and a lovely one at that. It faced east over the
Mississippi, which wasn't the sea but it was about as close as a
river could get.
