Indiana University offers a correspondence course for high school level
German.  They are looking for instructors to do the grading, and
possibly course development.  If you are interested in details, contact

AND THE WINNER IS - DIE "DEUTSCHE LEITKULTUR"

        Der in den vergangenen Wochen so heftig diskutierte Begriff der
        "Deutschen Leitkultur" hat nun endlich auch eine gebuehrende Aus-
        zeichnung erhalten: Er wurde von der PONS-Redaktion zum "Unwort
        des Jahres 2000" gewaehlt. Begruendung: Das Wort sei nicht fuer
        alle Buerger eines Landes eindeutig und behindere eine sachliche
        Auseinandersetzung.

        Die Diskussionen und Rechtfertigungsversuche einiger Politiker,
        die immer noch hoffen, mit Hilfe dieses populistischen Wortes den
        kommenden Wahlkampf bestimmen zu koennen (vgl. Unterschriftenak-
        tion bei den Landtagswahlen in Hessen), geht nun schon ziemlich
        lange. Und das Internet wird nicht ausgespart:

        Auf der Seite von leitkultur.de beispielsweise, die nicht von den
        Unionsparteien gepflegt wird (sondern von David Guembel, partei-
        loser Informatikstudent aus Tuebingen) erfaehrt man unter den Ru-
        briken wie "Kommentare zum Thema", "Stimmen aus dem Ausland" und
        "Reaktionen" viel Wissenswertes und Interessantes rund um die
        "Deutsche Leitkultur". Die Intension von David Guembel war es vor
        allem, sich "die Domain zu reservieren, bevor es die CSU, die
NPD,
        oder ueberhaupt irgendeine Partei oder jemand mit politischen
        Absichten tut". Man kann sich auf der Website aber nicht nur in-
        formieren, sondern auch seine Meinung im "Diskussionsforum" zum
        Besten geben. Primaeres Ziel ist es, "einer sachlichen, niveau-
        vollen Diskussion fernab jeder Partei oder Organisation ein Forum
        zu bieten", so David Guembel.
        Und auch bei der Domain deutsche-leitkultur.de sind CDU/CSU nicht
        beteiligt. Unter dieser URL wurde ein weiteres Diskussionsforum
        zum Thema eingerichtet, das u. a. den Begriff "Deutsche Leitkul-
        tur" im Zusammenhang mit den virtuellen Welten und Grenzen des
        Internets hinterfragt und eine Linkliste zu weiteren Websites an-
        bietet.

        Hoffentlich kommen einige "findige" Politiker nicht auch noch auf
        die Idee, dass man deutschsprachige Internetseiten bald nicht
mehr
        ins Englische oder Chinesische uebersetzen darf, weil das ja
        nicht mit der "Deutschen Leitkultur" vereinbar ist...oder mit den
        Worten von Aussenminister Fischer ausgedrueckt: "Steht
Entenhausen
        fuer die deutsche Leitkultur oder zaehlt das schon zur amerikani-
        schen Ueberfremdung?"

My understanding is that your students would still need mail
accounts, that is, space on a server.  Would your school system allow
for student accounts?  This would alleviate the problem with Hotmail
or other commercial servers (BTW, i canceled my hotmail account
because of the amount of smut advertisement i received).

We use CourseInfo, which is wonderful for so many things.  If you
think, however, that your school system won't go for such an expense,
think about teaming up with faculty from other disciplines.  English
faculty can have students write on-line with such programs and return
essays corrected interlinearly on-line.  Social studies faculty might
also appreciate the "chat" features of such programs.  Frequently
students will take the time to write when they are less comfortable
speaking up in class.  Our program also allows students to access
their progress in the course at any time, access to web addresses
i've listed for web work, documents i want them to read that are not
in the books, etc.  Our listening comprehension exercises are also
on-line (the sound quality is excellent!).
I would like to hear more about what is really feasible at the high
school level.

At IUPUI we use a software called On-Course that allows for controlled
e-groups of the kind I think you're talking about.  I think we are offering
a free version of it called Angel.  On the other hand, maybe a listserve

served purposes of parent/student communications. I don't feel I have
enough time (or desire) to learn "highwired" and use it as it could be used.

In the past I have wondered what the consequences could be of students
setting up accounts at hotmail.com at school could be and use those for
inter-communication. Somehow I can imagine parents might feel a bit out of
the loop.

As a mom, I would not want my son or daughter to have some account where
they could be communicating without my knowlege with someone somewhere else
in the world (ok, enough scarey stories out there to make this somewhat of
an issue).

But the idea of an e-group is neat. What does everyone else think? Could it
be done? Hank, how easy was it to set up? What control do you have over the

  Die CDU brachte den Begriff"deutsche Leitkultur" im Zusammenhang mit
ihren Vorstellungen
zur Einwanderungsplitik in die Diskussion! Inzwischen spricht
sie noch noch von "Leitkultur in Deutschland". Wolf Biermann, der
