Sharon,

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond, we have been doing some remodeling so things have been crazy around here!   Anyway, there is a meeting tomorrow at 10:30 AM in Mundelein for the Lake county H.O.U.S.E. (home oriented unique schooling experience) group.  They meet the second Wednesday of the month at St. Andrews church off of Rt. 45.  The contact person for that group is Liz (847) 949-4946.   They have lots of organized activities for kids of all ages and support from other parents.

There is also another group called Appletree that meets in Lake County but they are a little harder to get into, when I called them they told me they have a waiting list.  They meet weekly and do art, music and gym activities for the kids.  I can find the number for the contact person for that group if you are interested.   I also belong to the Northern Illinois Christian Home Educators group that meets monthly and has gym classes every other week.  Let me know if you want more information, I don't know what your religious affiliation is so I don't know if that is one you would be interested in or not.

Illinois H.O.U.S.E. also has a website that has all the information on the conference that I mentioned to you.  http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/7804

Let me know if I can give you any more information :-}

Sharon, This is my second year to homeschool and you
should stick to what you want to do! Many people
don't understnad so they think homeschooling is bad.
I remember how sweet many kids were until they went to
preschool or kindergarten. It is really amazing how
they change. If you want to talk more about
homeschooling I am here. Doreen in Canton

Welcome Sharon!

We're glad you're with all of us "normal" folks!LOLOL
I've faced the same thing you have with strange looks
and disapproval --- we all have. There is this
presumption that unless you have a specialized degree
you cannot possibly know how to take care of your own
child! It absolutely infuriates me! Now what? You
do exactly as you said. You continue having fun with
your child and do what she needs when she needs it.
You see, we teach our children safety, manners,
personal care, etc...so why should academics be any
different? You can tell when your child is intrigued
by something so use that window of opportunity to
teach her (why is really nothing more than answering
her questions.) Why does a pre-school teacher need to
do that for you? You sound like just the independent
kind of spirit that will really enjoy homeschooling
once you get comfortable with it. Welcome to the
group and keep in touch.

Welcome to the list Sharon:)  Where in Illinois do you live?  There is an excellent home school conference March 17 and 18 that has workshops for new home schoolers and lots of stuff for the kids.  They also have child care available for the really little ones.

Subject: [Illinoishomeschool] ~New!!~

From: "Sharon Jacksack" <jacksack@...>

Hello,
I am new to this group, new to homeschooling, and relatively new to Illinois.  My name is Sharon, and I am mom to two, Angela (3 this month) and our baby,  Valerie (7 mo).  My husband and I, after being pestered and pestered by lots of well meaning people about which preschool we were going to enroll Angela into, finally put our foot down and said none.  She is going to be preschooled at home.  Now we are getting a lot of raised eyebrows.

Is this normal behavior?  What is this assumption that as soon as a child turns three we are supposed to kick them out of the house to go to preschool, and why should I pay someone good money to have fun with her, when I could be doing it instead?

So anyway, I guess the upshot to all this is that it is good to know that there are some perfectly normal, nice people out there that have made the same decision that we have.

Now, what?

Thanks!
Sharon J.

Hi folks...

Just a quick note of introduction.

My name is LauraMaery Gold and I'm writing a new book on homeschooling to
be published this summer. I'll be lurking here to review this list for
inclusion in the book.

If any of you post something brilliant, I may ask permission to quote you.
(In fact, if any of you would like to contribute anecdotes or brief reviews
of free homeschool resources -- and possibly earn a free copy of the book
-- please drop by my Web page at <http://www.writerspost.com/hs4free>.)

I'm the mother of seven, and homeschool kids from 17 years to 19 months,
while writing books and cooking bad Chinese food.

I look forward to meeting those of you I haven't met on other lists.

   From: drlisal@...

I am new to this community but I was hoping someone might have some
information for me. Can anyone tell me if there is any news about the IHSA's
decision to exclude homeschoolers in any of there activities? My oldest
daughter attended a public high school last year and participated in band and
marching band. This is her first year to homeschool but she didn't want to give
up her band and marching band. She is attending the public school for band and
participated in this year's marching band season. She is very distraught by the
news that next year she will not be allowed to participate unless she takes FOUR
classes at the school which she has no desire to do. She feels she is being
discriminated against and is being blackmailed/held at gunpoint by a
quasi-government organization. I was wondering if anyone has any information on
this subject. Please let me know if you've heard anything. Thank you.

E-mail: ASERET70@...

They have 25 chapters in Illinois (most are around Chicago) however, they do

Also you can contact Illinois Christian Home Educators at (847) 662-1909

They work with support groups around Illinois and hold 2 conferences yearly
(one in Naperville and one in Mt. Vernon). They put me in contact with a
group in my area.

Hi Kathy,

I live in Antioch which is about an hour east of you. I used to work in
Rockford and it took me about an hour to get to work. If you hear of any
good home school groups in my area please let me know.

Thanks, Valerie

Hi Valerie!

Welcome to the list! I live in Wheaton (DuPage
Co.)and have been homeschooling for 6-7 yrs now. Only
this year did I receive a "registration" package to be
filled out for the School Board. I sent them a list
of my children and their ages and courses of study ---
no further problems yet. What I always do is have the
kids do some form of written work and projects
(posters, dioramas, projects which can be
photographed, etc)so that there is a record of proof
of what we have been studying. I was only audited
once, when my son was in the hospital psychiatric unit
for depression and ADHD. They told me that our
studies were FAR above public school and their program
and told me to just keep doing what I was doing!
Homeschooling has not proven to be a problem for me in
my community. It was public school that was the
problem!!LOLOLOL

Hi Valerie-

I am in Rockford, IL. I am homeschooling my 4 yr old so there isnt much to
do as far as state requirements. You dont have to keep records til age 7 and
then from what I understand all it is is attendance. Havent made it that far
to worry about it yet. I belong to a group called HOUSE. We really dont
participate too much as kassy is young. Let me know where you are or else I
can give you the number for my group and see if they can refer you.

Hi,

My name is Valerie Zelinski and I am new to the list and home schooling. I live
in Northern Illinois (near the Wisconsin border) and am looking for home school
groups in my area. If anyone knows of any I would appreciate your referrals. I
have an 8 year old son who has been attending public school up until now and I
have decided to take him out and home school him for many reasons. I would like
to know if anyone else on the list has had any problems with the public school
system in Illinois after withdrawing their child to home school them?
I have read that the laws are pretty leinient in Illinois but am still a little
concerned about possible repercussions from the public school system. I would
appreciate hearing anyone else's experiences with this.

Thanks,

Valerie

Just a reminder for those who are looking for things to do with their children.
As mentioned earlier (not meaning to sound pushy) you are welcome to come
join our 4-H club. We meet on Friday nights from 7-9 pm at Geneva Road Baptist
Church at 602 E. Geneva in Wheaton. We are near the corner of Geneva and
President. We will be making Christmas decorations tonight and for the next
two weeks and will also be baking Christmas cookies as a fundraiser for UNICEF.
Consider yourselves warmly invited for the holidays!

A Happy Thanksgiving to all on the list!

If anyone is looking for a great way to enhance your
homeschooling I have a
welcoming offer for you. I live in DuPage County,
(Wheaton), and would like to
invite you to try our 4-H clubs. We have two clubs,
"Little Sparrows" which
is for kids 5-7 yrs. old and "Wings Like Eagles" for
kids who are 8-18 yrs. old.
We do everything from home ec. and fine arts to
computers and rocketry! I
have found it a great way to teach because I
integrate their 4-H projects into
their school curriculum. For instance, right now my
7 yr. old daughter and
8 yr. old son are doing deforestation. They have been
watching a wooded area
near the house being cleared for construction. They
began asking what happens
to all the animals? We started talking about what
happens when an animal
loses its habitat and food source. As they are
studying the issue of clearing
forests we have been collecting leaves to identify
for natural science. We
toured the Morton Arboretum and Willowbrook Wildlife
Refuge and talked to the
speakers there. At the same time, my 13 yr. old
daughter is doing Photography
in 4-H. She has been researching the factors
involved in taking good pictures
and then decided to do wildlife photography as long
as we were going to these
places anyway. So she's also learning what they are
learning on a higher
scale. You can pick the subjects you want to
research and work it right in
with their home curriculum! We also teach character
training and cooperative
learning so that they really learn how to treat and
encourage each other. We
throw in a handful of family outings to promote
family time and values. We
also hope that the parents wil learn to become a kind
of "support team" to each
other when needed! We meet at Geneva Road Baptist
Church at 602 E. Geneva Rd.
in Wheaton (near corner of Geneva and President) on
Friday nights from 7-9 p.m.
All are welcome and we would love to get to know
your family! Think about it
and give us a try!A Happy Thanksgiving to all on the

Thank you so much for the warm welcome to this site.
I have been homeschooling for about 6-7 yrs. now and
we love it. I have five kids (20, 17, 13, 8, 7)and
have homeschooled each of them. The two oldest did
not really like it because they had been in public
school and associated learning and school with pain
and humiliation. The younger three are fluorishing in
this environment and are making great strides. All
three of the kids have special needs and have been
challenging. The public schools couldn't come
anywhere near the 1-1 that they receive at home
learning at their own pace. I always enjoy learning
from others and would love to get to know you all.
Thanks again for the welcome...

Hi, I am also new to this list. Linnae, I subscribe to a list called
freestuffors. It is also through onelist under homeschooling. I get a lot of
information off of this list. There are alot of websites that have free
worksheets you can print too.

Hello Kathy,

We are just starting FIAR, so I'm not sure exactly how it is going
to take off yet. I personally love it and the idea behind it...but we
will see if the kids feel the same way! We will start Lentel
today...but this morning there was too much excitement going on! The
fire department was checking the hydrants, we were tracking tropical
storm Harvey on the weather channel (we have relatives in St. Pete
Fla.), and we were also working on alphabet photograpy books (idea out
of Family Fun Magazine) so we never got to it. Now is nap time, so
maybe later. Thanks for the hello! And again...would love to swap
pre-k stories and ideas! Sincerely, Linnea

Hi

I am homeschooling my 3 1/2 yr girl in Rockford. We really don`t do too much
curriculem wise. I got an early beginnings preschool program and we
concentrate on fine motor skills such as painting, coloring, glueing and
cutting. She has really not shown any interest in her letters or reading
yet. We do a lot of puzzles and computer programs such as the jumpstart. I
have BFIAR and I think I am going to start this once she finishes the above.
How do you like FIAR?

Kathy

Hello everyone,

My name is Linnea.  I am homeschooling my two children:  Abigail, 41/2;
and Harrison 21/2 in Chicago. I was thrilled to find an Illinois list!
It is nice to hear from people close to home.

We are just beginning our homeschooling journey. We are using Five In
A Row as our curriculum...but also take every life experience as a
learning opportunity. Any other preschool homeschoolers out there?

                                           Linnea
