Hi!  We have openings for our Young Patriots Club for next year.  We will continue to be studying the Revolutionary War.  It focused on George Washington this fall, however we plan to review what we have learned so far the first day (so new people can be on the same page).  Below are the details:

Who:  Boys ages 5-8
Date:  One Friday per month Feb-May
Time:  2:30 - 4:30 pm (will include 30-45 minutes of playtime)
Place:  My home in Woodridge (Just north of 355/55)- Parents are welcome to stay or drop-off
 Cost : $20

Please make sure your child has a desire to participate in this club.  One chapter book will need to be read for each class.  The class will be based on the book and we will have discussions about the book.  These books are intended to be read together as a family.

Please email me directly at xersize2@sbcglobal. net if you would like to participate or have any questions.  Thanks!

Here's another option you can look into if you are a homeschooler in need of
information on events, coops, materials and/or sign up for groups, sports and
other enrichment classes in the Illinois/Greater Chicago area. The Chicago
Homeschool Expo website has a Homeschool directory that could make your search a
whole lot easier.

Here's a more specific email list if you are living in the Greater Chicago area!
Please take advantage of this
new e-mail list.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ChicagoHSHappenings

This e-mail site is directed to everyone in the greater Chicago area who are
looking for EVENTS of interest to homeschoolers just in this immediate locality.
This is especially helpful if you wish to concentrate your search for and
posting of events to the city of Chicago alone.
If you have information on field trips, classes, concerts, plays, parties,
meetings, lectures, discussion groups, play dates and homeschool group
curriculum/used book sales, please feel free to POST YOUR EVENT in this
website!

Please note on the subject line where the event is located. In your emails,
indicate as much Who, What, When, Where information as possible and also please
put OPEN
if anyone is welcome. If you are looking for something, the subject must start
with
"LOOKING FOR".

We encourage all groups to post (or re-post) here, no matter how exclusive they
are (or aren't) so that people living in the Chicagoland area who are new to
homeschooling (or just beginning to consider the idea) can quickly find groups
and activities to suit them best.

Dear Home-school Families,

Our numbers are down this year in our girls basketball program.  Currently we are in desperate need of girls in grades 4th-6th to fill out our 5th/6th grade team (we only have 3 girls and would need at least 3 more to complete the team  --  no experience necessary).  We also could use more high school girls and even girls in 7th and 8th grade.  If you know of anyone who may be interested in playing on a home-school basketball team, please get them in contact with us.  I can be reached at Crossroads at (630) 556-3202 or by email.

This list is for posting any and all EVENTS for, about or of interest to
homeschoolers in the ENTIRE state of Illinois including but not limited
to: field trips, classes, concerts, plays, parties, meetings, lectures,
discussion groups, play dates and home school group curriculum/used book

A Sampler is your chance to experience The Greenhouse first-hand. Meet some of the people behind it. Catch the vision. Begin to see whether it might serve your family. The Greenhouse is more than a program for home-schoolers, it is a community of families committed to raising up godly servant leaders. Yes, we teach history and science, art and the performing arts, but we also teach and model Christian virtue and service. Serving students in grades 1-12, The Greenhouse is a center for classical and Christian studies, which seeks to bring the best of a classical education into the home-school community. Sound interesting? Attend a Greenhouse Sampler. All Samplers are held at Christ Community Church, 602 E. Geneva Road in Wheaton. Samplers are for adults only please. To RSVP – which is helpful but not mandatory – call Adelia at 630/462-9657 ext 114. We will be offering several Samplers this school year; the next one is Thursday, November 5, 7:30-9:00 p.m.

Bruce is offering to all his friends, a chance to get something you are going to need pretty soon. No, it's not a Starbucks. I have 2010 calendars and you can help me out. Money to ministries is down all over the nation and it is with Sequoia Ministry also. The Lord has a plan for this ministry, but I know it takes more help from others. Every ministry needs help to survive. You can help me by donating $20.00 and picking out a nice calendar. Have a look. Your going to need one pretty soon. I have to beat all the other ministries, so help if you can. Suggested donation is $20.00 or more for one and $35.00 or more for two calendars. They make nice gifts. If the beautiful pictures of the calendars does not post, you can go to my web site and see them.    Sequoia Ministry Web Site  Blessings,  Ranger Bruce

Step into your own little paradise. Far off the well-worn path, concealed by a high hedge or overgrown fence, the secret garden is a sanctuary for the mind, body, and spirit. The Secret Garden Calendar opens the gate to a dozen inviting retreats, each one a living tapestry of sunlight, vibrant blooms, greenery, and weathered stone. Through an arbor, an exuberant jumble of antique roses. Blossoms in pink, red, and yellow make a colorful splash against a whitewashed brick wall. A pair of chairs sits invitingly in the shade of a giant maple. Romantic, peaceful, and restorative, these gardens indulge the senses and inspire contemplation, all year long. Photographs are accompanied by gardening quotations, tips, and appreciations.

Colorful, fragrant, and ever-alluring, flowers breathe life and beauty into any environment. With a dozen simple arrangements photographed in natural light, the Flowers Calendar celebrates the unembellished splendor of blooms just picked from the garden and displayed in found containers. Bright parrot tulips with frilly yellow edges. Purple and pink water lilies displayed in a tall glass vase. A sophisticated bouquet of hydrangea, freesia, and peonies, an intoxicating bundle of French lilacs with pink astilbe, and sweet peas charmingly arranged in an egg-shaped vessel. Plus sculptural calla lillies, hyacinths, and a classic bouquet of deep red roses for February.

Experience the lifelife sights and sounds of 12 beloved North American birds!
Birders flocked to the innovative Bird Songs 2009 Calendar, adapted from Bird Songs by Les Beletsky. The 2010 calendar features all-new North American bird species and improved sound from the push-button digital audio module that plays each bird's call. Includes a fold-out bird poster.

The presence of songbirds in your garden can be one of nature's greatest delights. Songbirds are among North America's most colorful, melodious, and accessible natural resources. Songbirds are also indicators of a healthy, stable environment. Songbirds of North America features photography from some of the best wildlife photographers. Every month, information about a different species is offered, including habitat, behavior, and distribution.

For America's birders, this perennially best-selling calendar celebrates the backyard songsters that enrich our lives with their jewel-like hues and cheerful songs. Spot a Rufous Hummingbird homing in on a flower. A trio of Barn Swallow chicks, a stunning Pileated Woodpecker, plus jays, tanagers, bobolinks, and a clutch of blue Robin's eggs. In addition to the daily photographs, one species is spotlighted every month with a large photograph and detailed text.

I am so sorry to keep everyone waiting so long who as responded to me.  I never thought this "simple" project would turn into 4 weeks of work!!!!  The forest preserve wanted general liability insurance which was $400 and it did not even cover the kids!!!!  Crazy, anyway, we the forest preserve came up with a conclusion to go ahead without the insurance.  I am asking every participant to sign a waiver and provide health insurance info in case any has an injury.  You will be responsible, not me or the forest preserve.  At least one parent/adult would need to do the mile with your child.  I hope this would be a "family" project anyway.  I did move the date back so the kid's could have 2 months to complete the mileage.

Date:  Sunday, November 1st
Time: 1 pm.
Place:  Greene Valley Forest Preserve, Woodridge (75th St and 53 or close to the 55/355 intersection if you are coming from a further distance)
Cost:  $10 per participant ($5 goes towards medal/$5 to pediatric program at Marianjoy Rehabilitation hospital in Wheaton
Deadline to register:  Sept 30 (to allow enough time for training

Kids are to run/walk any combination of 25.2 miles in the two months leading up to the race.  They will then complete the last mile together to complete the full marathon of 26.2 miles!

Suggestions for training:
-Make a chart
-We measured our block and it is about 1/3 of a mile so we have three squares for each mile.  Some days they will do one, others more.  What every works best for each kid.  Just help them go "slow and steady".  Often kids run to fast then can not cover a certain distance.

Please email me at xersize2@sbcglobal. net to receive a copy of the waiver and payment info.  I must receive both by Sept. 30 to confirm your registration.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Kelly,
Hopkins Park is pretty nice. There's lots of space for the kiddos to run
around, a fairly new playground area and picnic tables and benches. It's on Rt.
23 (Sycamore Rd.) across from Jewel. The pool is also on the same property.

Happy picnicing!

Hi - I'm looking for a meeting place to have a picnic with a family, that we
haven't seen in a long time. Half way between our two houses is DeKalb. We
don't know the area and I was wondering if someone can recommend a neat park to
have a picnic in and let kids run around.

Thanks!

The Homeschool Resource Center is forming basketball teams to begin this winter.  Practices would be starting the beginning of November.  We are located in Monee, IL, but we do not have a practice gym location yet.

We are forming teams for:   junior high girls, high school girls, junior high boys, high school boys.

Please respond if any of your children are interested in playing, with their name and age.  We are also looking for parents to help coach, as we prefer to have two coaches for each team.

More details will follow later.

HSRC Athletic Program Mission Statement and Purpose

Mission Statement

This organization and its leaders are committed to God's Word and His principles. We seek the participation of families who share this commitment to God's Word and to homeschooling.

Believing that the family is the primary source for training and teaching, we seek to help, support, encourage, and meet the needs of home school families by providing opportunities to participate on sports teams. Also, because we believe that parents are ultimately responsible for the education of their children, and that athletic programs are part of the educational process, the HSRC is governed by a parent board.  Our desire is to build Godly character through competition and team work, encourage Christian conduct and attitude, and strengthen any ability. We believe that God has given us physical gifts to develop and use to bring Him glory. We believe that sports are an excellent opportunity for spiritual, emotional and social growth.

Policies:

Programs will depend on coach and facility availability, and student interest. Efforts will be made to schedule appropriate competition as close as possible to Monee, IL but most of the competitions will require travel. The board will give final approval of new sports, coaches and facilities.

Participation in a sport counts as PE class credit(s). High school athletes have 4 years of athletic eligibility once they are declared a high school student. (Ex. An 8th grader playing on a high school team will not use any of his or her 4 years of high school eligibility.)

All participants must be part-time or full-time homeschoolers. National and state competitors (we may compete at these levels for basketball and girls’ volleyball) must be at least 50% home schooled and meet age requirements. If an athlete takes 18 or more college credit hours of classes in a year, participates in a high school graduation ceremony or gets married he/she cannot compete at the National Home School Championships.

I have a few more spots open for this class:

I am planning a Revolutunary War/George Washington/Spy Class for my son.  He has wanted to do this for about a year or so because his sister in Liberty Belles.  Now that I am teaching Liberty Belles this year, I am going to do this for him too.  The class would be for boys ages 5-8+ (estimate).  The Thomas Jefferson classes start at age 8 because of maturity and attention span (which is very true).  This will be a fun class for kids, no pressure to participate in activities if they do not want too, however they should have a true love/desire to study this time frame and be able to participate in a class like this.  You know your child best.  There will be 3 chapter books to read throughout the classes, which are anticipated to be read as a family, knowing how to read is not required.

The one thing we loved about doing these type of classes is it really overflowed into a lot of things we learned outside of the class.  I truly did not like history at all until about a year and a half ago because my children's love and the use of historical fiction to introduce these topics/make it fun.

Parents may attend the class with their child if they would like to, however it is optional.  Depending on the number of kids, I may ask a parent to stay and help with crafts at one class.

Dates:  Fridays (Sept. 25, Oct. 23, Nov. 20, Dec. 18)
Time: 2:30-4 pm
Place:  My home in Woodridge (close to 55/355 or off 75th Street between 53 and 355 )
Cost:  $15 for cost of supplies/snacks

Please email at xersize2@sbcglobal. net if you are interested.  Thanks!

Subject: OSOTIL Christmas Stocking Project
Date: Sun, 23 Aug 2009 15:36:24
From: Kathy Metzger <osotilchristmas@...>

  Greetings!

It may seem as though we are starting this Christmas request a little early,
and we are, but is because this year we are in need of stockings to be sewn.
We will need approximately 6,000 stockings sewn in order for all our troops to
receive a little piece of home at the Christmas holiday.   We have the templates
that are required to make the stockings a uniform size.   Please email Kathy
Metzger at osotilchristmas@... to be mailed a copy of the pattern.   If
you have a template from previous years, you may use that pattern.   Please let
us know how many stockings you will be sewing.
We will also have the templates available at both warehouses.   We will need
the sewn stockings back to us by October 15 th   or earlier if possible,   in
order to get them filled and packed for shipping in a timely fashion.

We will be filling the stockings a little differently this year.   For the
safety and security of our troops, stockings will not be taken out of the
warehouse to be filled by separate groups this holiday season.   We will,
however, allow the groups to collect items needed for stockings, then come into
the warehouse to fill the stockings there.   If you wish to do a collection and
not sew any stockings, please email Kathy Metzger at osotilchristmas@...
with your request and she will forward that on to our collections department.
We would like to have the donations back by no later than October 15 th as well,
but earlier if
possible.   You may bring your donations with you when you are scheduled to
fill stockings.

We appreciate all that you have done for OSOTIL in the past and we hope that
this year we can count on you again to make the holiday season a special one for
the troops.

  Sincerely,

  Kathy Metzger
