1) for a Brooklyn, use 1/4" balsa epoxied. You need to be light!!!
2) A Brooklyn is not a good ship for a rookie because it is so small and tipsy! Better to build a Class 4 or 5 but be that as it may, there are combatants near you who can help you with the construction.
3) Welcome to the group, if we can answer any questions for you just ask!
So I am in in MA near Lowell. I am building, or should I say we (meaning my son and I are attempting to build) a Brooklyn. We
have had it sitting around for awhile, but I wanted to get it started. I am at T-0. Meaning I have a fiberglass hull that I sanded this weekend (between Boy Scouts, Basketball, etc.) and am getting ready to apply the masking tape for hull marking.
I am moving really slow (I travel a lot for work), but I find things go better when I can visualize what I am trying to accomplish.

Balsa is what I was planning, but it appears that something else was used here (??)

I used balsa that was epoxied to make it water proof.

So, as a new guy trying to start a ship solo, what material are you using to create the bilge channel?

Hey all. We have 3 new Captains building in the Hayes ship yards and it looks like all 3 will be ready for
Regionals. We have good Joe building a Maryland, evil Joe building a V.U. and plain Glen building a South Dakota. All are progressing well.
The boy is re-fitting his Q.E. We are waiting for new shafts and props to arrive. I have started to re- build a 1962 Dumas tug boat for precission steering for the Task Force 50 contest this year.

I know this is a few weeks old. How are you coming? Did you make contact with Don, Fred, and Company? I agree with Marty, these things rock a lot. Get your...
Give me until after the weekend to come back with the "plan". Don in MA has agreed to help me out Saturday, so I hope to leave with some ideas on what teh heck...
Tell Don I said HI. OK on 6 volt motors. NO NO NO on the gel cells. Lose weight and get it low with NiMH Packs from cheapbatterypacks.com I use what are...
Nate, You're probably right on "No" to gel cells in a cruiser, but my VU has a 6V12A gel cell which weighs 5 lbs. I still had to add 1 lb of weight to the...
This VU's Hull had to be reinforced and has a heavy water channel. It is still light with these cells but I was trying to see how they performed. I lowered the...
G'day guys. I have been following the comments on NiMH re the Brooklyn and I have a number of smaller boats that would benefit from NiMH. I popped over the...
I have been using the 4ah, and 3300ah packs with12 gauge wire and deans connectors. This will be the 4th season I've used them and of the 8 packs I bought only...
Ok. I haven't read the data you require in a while. also, the answer is something of a moving target. as the years go by , the manufacturers have made better...
I meant these units in specific Nate I have NiMH that if you pull more than 5% capacity an hour you get only 5% of the rates capcity (i.e. a 2000 mah battery...
Sanyo cells across their product line give the best current without dropping voltage and hold capacity well at high draw. Panasonics give the best total...
I will say that I have experimented with some of the cheap Chinese cells. They are cheap, and well worth the price. I found out of every order, about 1/3 to...
Dad, for a light battle early in the week, my VU pulled between 1.7-2.3 amps. After a lot of running, pumping, and allowing the ship to almost sink several...
Thanks. BTW, those numbers are Amp-Hours of capacity not average Amp Draw which we did not measure. Bud, Do you remember what the drive motors drew for current...
They were very low. I remember my 6volt Dumas would draw less than 0.1 a (<100mA) no load and 1 Amp Load. When we went to the 12 volt, I have Coleman/Pittman...
Nate or Mr President, Did you get that form to fill out from Wrentham Cooperate Bank. It is to get your name on our bank account in case anything happens to ...
Hi Don, I have the form filled out and the DL copy in hand. I looked it over a while ago but did not send it because the fine print authorizes the bank to do...
I never got the form, so the wife didn’t get a chance to read it, credit checks don’t bother me much, I like it when they get the numbers and then their...
Amen to that. It can be used to your favor. I have been annoyed at how frequently a lot of applications - and not for financing - slip that in and the company...
Agreed also. I run 4-5300 NIHMs in the Vondertann. 2 for drive-2 for the pump. Works GREAT! In a message dated 2/23/2012 5:23:33 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, ...
I have been playing with the bis running 7.2's (my second pump set) at home for the last year. The one that is the power hog is the Arizona running twin 550's...
For the big ships, I still like the BRICK - 12V 18 Ah SLA. cheap, reliable, can be left on charge as is its primary use for emergency power systems. One very...
