Zeer geachte heer / mevrouw,

"Band of Strangers"

The YSI Band's Amsterdam film premiere

Thursday, July 15, 2009, 8 pm, Amsterdam Zuid

The Beatles had "A Hard Day's Night" and the Spice Girls had "Spice World"; and now the YSI band have their film, "Band of Strangers".

Like their forerunners' cinematic offerings, "Band of Strangers" is "fiction based on fact", in this case possibly more of a docudrama, and arguably with a more serious, public minded, aspiration, telling of a band's preparation for undertaking a "service project" in Afria, including their efforts to fund it.

The film is the result of a chance - or not - meeting with film maker Didier Chabi, originally from Benin, West Africa, now based in Utrecht. He and the band will all be present on the evening, which will include some background explanation and discussion – as well as a screening of the film itself, in English, with Dutch sub-titles.

Youth Service Initiative (YSI) is a youth service training programme based in Utrecht, Rotterdam and Frankfurt. YSI recently spent time serving in Ghana, in cooperaion with Maartje Bos of Community Partnership for Youth and Women Development (CPYWD), a multi-purposed communities based NGO registered and working in Northern Ghana. As part of their service, YSI-Utrecht perform as a music band and their music is also featured in the film.

Ecumenical Mass in Holland -- Dominicans  - Received from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MarriedPriestsUSA

Will innovation save this church?

National Catholic Reproter; Issue Date: December 14, 2007; Stories by ROBERT J. McCLORY; Amsterdam and other cities in Holland

The 11 a.m. Sunday liturgy at St. Dominic Church in Amsterdam exemplifies the paradoxes of Catholicism in Holland. It is -- or is meant to be -- a Mass, with a soaring eucharistic prayer sung in alternative parts by the presider, the choir and the congregation. Other parts of the Mass familiar to Catholics are missing. This is an ecumenical Mass, unlike anything most Catholics would encounter at their local churches.

On a Sunday in November, the church was packed, as it is regularly, with some 600 worshipers, the majority elderly or middle-aged but with a substantial representation of younger people, including families with children. So powerful was the music and singing and so involved the congregation, it was impossible not to be moved. It did not look like something dead or dying, as Catholicism in Holland is reputed to be, but like something impossibly new.

There is a saying among Dutch Catholics these days that the situation of the church in the Netherlands is "hopeless but not serious." This Zen-like assessment reflects dual realities of the Dutch church: It is the place where some of the most dramatic innovations in Catholic practice in the past half-century have occurred simultaneously with one of the most precipitous drops in church membership in the Western world.

International interest in the state of Catholicism in this part of the world was stirred in September when the Dutch province of the Dominican religious order sent shock waves around the world with a 34-page booklet benignly titled "Church and Ministry" and distributed to all 1,425 parishes in the country.

The booklet proposes that because of a serious shortage of priests and a revised theology of ministry coming from Vatican II, the time is at hand for parish communities to designate laypersons to preside at the Eucharist in place of priests -- a form of ordination from below. It also declares that current church law, which bars women and married men from priestly service, stems from a "historically outdated philosophy of humankind and an antiquated view of sexuality."

Free-falling numbers

According to the Catholic Institute for Social-Religious Research, there were 4.3 million Catholics among the Netherlands' 16 million people in 2006. That figure represents a decrease of 700,000 Catholics since 2000 and 1.3 million since 1980. The reality is even starker than the figures, since only about 60 percent of that 4.3 million really consider themselves Catholic in anything other than name. Sunday Mass attendance is about 7 percent of the Catholic population, down from 14 percent in 1990 and 24 percent in 1980. The total of active diocesan priests in 2006 was 950, compared to 2,150 in 1990 and 3,400 in 1980. Few young men attend theology schools. Ordinations have averaged 10 to 15 per year for the whole country. The Breda diocese had no ordinations for a recent stretch of almost 15 years.

Similar declarations have come from progressive theologians and other reform-minded Catholics for years, but this document, approved by an entire province of a respected religious order, is particularly dramatic and bold. What did these Dutch Dominicans hope to achieve? Some say it is best understood in the context of a country where Christianity has been on a steep downward trajectory for decades, losing 22 percent of its members in the last 17 years alone.

Ton Bernts, director of the Catholic Institute for Social-Religious Research in Nijmegen, traces the decline to the usual suspects -- secularization and the loss of respect for virtually all forms of institutional authority. "People just don't accept what they're told any more," said Bernts. "I would say the time of the traditional territorial parish is over." He could point to virtually no signs in Holland of Catholic institutions that are showing strength elsewhere -- no new, conservative religious orders of women, very little evangelical or charismatic activity, only sparse interest in religious movements such as Communion and Liberation or Focolare, no visible presence of Opus Dei.

The only faith that appears to be growing in this part of the world is Islam, whose adherents in the Netherlands are approaching a million, he noted.

Though he sees no new models within Christianity to justify his cautious optimism, he believes it will survive, if in "a modest way," but only "if it can find a way to sell itself better, but I don't really see new models," Bernts said.

Little religion on campus

The challenge of engaging the next generation was visible at Nijmegen's sprawling Radboud University, which is, in effect, the official Catholic University of the Netherlands. There, in sharp contrast to the vibrancy of religion on many campuses in the United States, but perhaps as a harbinger of changes to come, Dutch students interviewed by NCR repeatedly said that religion and religious issues play no part in campus life. "If there's as much as 1 percent of Catholics here who have any interest, I would be surprised," said one junior history major. "It's not that we're angry at the church; it's just that the whole thing seems irrelevant."

In the lunchroom, Elam Zeyrek, a 25-year-old law student raised as an Orthodox Syrian Christian, was just finishing his sandwich. "Religion isn't discussed here except for Islam, and then it's all about the troubles with terrorism," he said. "Personally, I believe in God, but it's up to everyone to choose." Zeyrek admitted he often feels an urge to ask for a blessing when he sits down to eat, "so there's something still there, though it's not at the center of my life."

Appearances are not deceiving, said Marit Monteiro, professor of Catholic history at Radboud. "Those interested in changing the structure, that generation is dying," she said, "and young people aren't interested." Many Catholics may still continue "believing," she said, but "not belonging. They don't challenge the Vatican or the Vatican's interpretation. "

In contrast, she said, in the 1960s and '70s hopes were high. Those were the years when "the bishops went along with the rhetoric of renewal and modernization. "

The hierarchical part of the equation began to change in the 1980s when the Vatican stepped in and appointed conservative bishops, most notably Joannes Gijsen, to the southern, heavily Catholic diocese of Roermond. Renewal efforts were discouraged throughout the country, liberal priests and other church leaders lost their positions, the popular Dutch Catechism was suppressed. Though mass protests were mounted against the crackdown, by the year 2000, said Monteiro, "Catholics had reached the bottom of their endurance."

In 2003 the reformist Eighth Day Movement, which had once drawn thousands to its rallies and conferences, shut down for lack of interest. The enthusiasm was gone and no one would pick up the baton.

Meanwhile, the Dutch Dominicans in Holland have remained exceptionally progressive, said Monteiro, who has written a history of the order in Holland. "They are courageous," she said, "but now they are old and frail." She described the new booklet on ordination of the laity as "their swan song."

Hints of a flame

It was not difficult to find lay leaders who, while acknowledging the church's dwindling profile, are deeply involved in church affairs and see hints of flame in the embers. Some are members of the Dutch Dominican Lay Fraternity, which extends the influence of the religious order into education, journalism, theology, social work and other professions. Jan van Hooydonk, 52, is editor of the magazine Vol Zin (loosely translated as "Full of Meaning"), a joint Catholic-Protestant publication dealing with spirituality, worship and theology. "I would think only 5 to 10 percent of Catholics support official church positions on things like birth control, euthanasia and male priesthood," he said. "Unfortunately, there's no discussion of these issues with the hierarchy."

But van Hooydonk believes rejection of institutional religion does not necessarily translate into full-blown atheism or indifference. "People today are looking for symbols and rituals to nourish their lives," he said, citing as an offbeat example a tremendous popular interest in the Dutch monarchy and the doings of Queen Beatrice and the royal family.

There still exists, he said, a healthy and creative interchange between Catholics and members of the Dutch Protestant church. Informal liturgies are organized by laypeople, priests and ministers, he said, on a larger scale than the public realizes. Van Hooydonk himself is a member of such a group, which celebrates Christmas, Easter and other occasions at Nijmegen's historic St. Stephen Catholic Church. The Netherlands branch of the Catholic peace organization Pax Christi recently merged with the Protestant-led Interchurch Peace Movement, he noted, and Catholics are active members of the Netherlands' National Council of Churches.

The ecumenical activity that prospered following Vatican II is largely ignored by church authority today. Nevertheless, it seems clear from the abundance of surviving and ongoing ecumenical contact that the future of Dutch Catholicism, however limited, will have a distinctive, even radical ecumenical character.

Ecumenism at St. Dominic's

A dramatic example of that is the service at St. Dominic Church. The sermon the day this writer visited was delivered by the church's copastor, Miriam Wolthuis, a Catholic theologian, on the presence of God in daily life as understood by Martin Buber. The presider during the eucharistic prayer was a layman, and seated near the altar, wearing a sweater and tie, was 84-year-old Jan Nieuwenhuis, the man who launched this ecumenical endeavor some 40 years ago and who remains a Dominican Catholic priest in good standing. He was one of the four authors of the Dominican booklet on ordination.

Following the service, a Protestant woman said she and her husband have been coming for 11 years because "it's a place where you can bring your questions and your doubts and you're not going to be dictated to."

"We separated some 400 years ago," said an usher. "Now, God willing, we're getting back together again."

Asked if we had participated in a real Mass with a real consecration, Nieuwenhuis said, "Of course, but actually it is we who are consecrated, we who are sent forth to break our lives for others."

Nieuwenhuis and several other Dominicans were appointed to St. Dominic's in 1964 when the church was in poor condition and had few parishioners. "We were told to do what needed to be done," he said. When the vernacular liturgy was introduced, the old choir, preferring Latin, left and was replaced by a local youth choir. "Immediately, the singing got better," said Nieuwenhuis. Then a Protestant minister asked if he could join the parish and preach on occasion. The congregation voted him in, "and immediately the preaching got better." Then a secular priest who had married asked to be involved. The congregation approved again, and outreach to the community got better. Nieuwenhuis said he and the staff then visited the bishop, who declared the situation at St. Dominic's "impossible. "

In the 1980s the bishop attempted to close down the church and threatened to excommunicate Nieuwenhuis, but since the Dominicans are an exempt order, answerable only to their own superiors, his hands were tied. "I've had the support of the Dominican Order all these years," he said, "and that is essential for this to happen." The current pastoral staff includes copastors, one Catholic and one Protestant, and eight preachers, one of whom is Nieuwenhuis. More than 3,000 persons are associated with the church, many serving as volunteers in outreach programs.

Grass-roots ecumenism "represents the future of the Catholic church," he said. "You can't wait for the Vatican. You must do it."

Hope in the present situation

Van Hooydonk, the editor, called the radical proposals regarding the Eucharist in the Dominican booklet "perfectly logical," since "the Eucharist belongs to the community, and the community has a right to the Eucharist that takes precedence over church laws that restrict priesthood to celibate men." The proposals stem directly from the theology of Dominican Fr. Edward Schillebeeckx, whom van Hooydonk called "the intellectual father of progressive Catholicism" in the Netherlands (see related story).

In effect then, the priest shortage has brought into the light Schillebeeckx' s theology "from below," largely veiled from public consideration for some 27 years. It is just such developments, suggested van Hooydonk, that make the present hopeless situation "not so serious," in fact, open to new developments.

Peter Nissen, who appears so often on television for his insights on Catholic matters that he has been called "the Dutch John Allen," sees the Dominican booklet as "a survival guide." At his home in Nijmegen, the dapper, 50-year-old history professor at Radboud University said the Dominican booklet is essential for the continually increasing number of parishes without priests. The proliferation of so-called "Word and Communion" services -- using pre-consecrated hosts and led by a lay pastoral worker -- has been growing each year throughout the Netherlands (630 such services in 2004 compared to 1,900 Sunday Masses that year). As it turns out, the compromise rituals are satisfactory neither to the hierarchy, who believe Catholics increasingly see the services as an actual Mass, nor for reformers, for the same reason, though they would prefer laity to be empowered to be eucharistic presiders.

The apparent strategy of the hierarchy now is to reduce the number of these Word and Communion services, so that eventually a priest will preside at every Eucharist. The price of course will be an increasing number of already exhausted circuit-rider priests, increased import of foreign priests and a steady trend of closed or merged parishes.

The Dominican plan would allow small basic communities to flourish under the leadership of their chosen eucharistic presiders. "Maybe such Eucharists aren't quite as full as those presided over by a pastor, but they have meaning and they have value," said Nissen. The Dominicans realize that neither they nor the dwindling supply of other clergy will be able to preserve Eucharist as the central act of the church, he explained, so this proposal is in a way "their last will and testament to the Catholics of the Netherlands. " The challenge is "how can we continue as liberal, pluralistic and ecumenical and still preserve and protect a relationship with the broader church, the church in the world, and the church over the centuries?" Nissen did not seem to think the task impossible.

When I met Dominican Fr. Andre Lascaris, another of the booklet's four authors, at the order's monastery in Huissen, a quiet, tree-lined town some 20 miles from Nijmegen, he was in high spirits. Some 550 people had turned out for a hastily organized conference in Amsterdam on the controversial "Church and Ministry" document three days before and gave nearly unanimous approval to the recommendations. "I was delighted," he said. "We wanted open discussion and we're getting it." At 68, Lascaris, the youngest of the authors and a bit impeded by his long battle with Parkinson's disease, is still ready for controversy. His career as a Dominican includes early service in South Africa, from which country he was expelled for publicly protesting the apartheid system, and assignments as editor of Dominican publications, novice master, prior, co-provincial and peacemaker in Northern Ireland. He remains active with the Dominican Study Center for Theology and Society, which he founded.

Nothing new

"What we are proposing is nothing new," he said. "Vatican II put the People of God first and the hierarchy second as ministers to the people [in the order of chapters in the document Lumen Gentium]. But the bishops are still far away from that thinking and acting that way. They don't look or think like servants. They see priesthood as a form of monarchy." Since the congregation as a whole "creates" the Eucharist, he said, the priest or other presider is present in an essentially "functionary role."

Lascaris uses dramatic analogies to make his points during our discussion. Suppose, he said, we discover rational beings in another galaxy 100 light years away. We can't possibly go there but we can communicate; they read our scriptures and come to believe in Jesus Christ as savior. So now they can baptize one another, but are we to tell them they can't have Eucharist because we can't send anyone with the power that far? "No!" said Lascaris. "The Eucharist comes from below."

Later he opened his Bible to the Book of Daniel and cited the account in Chapter 2 of the prophet's interpretation of the king's dream about a great statue of gold, silver and bronze but with legs partly of earthenware. When struck by a rock the feet collapsed, toppling the structure.

"The church is fragile," he said. "It would be better if democratization comes before the whole thing collapses."

He does not believe "Church and Ministry" alone will alter church policy. "It's dialogue we want," he said. "We don't expect miracles but we have to keep knocking on the door."

A few days later Lascaris, summoned by the Dominican master, Fr. Carlos Azpiroz Costa, left for Rome in the company of the Dutch Dominican provincial and another Dominican. When I spoke with Lascaris by phone on his return, he was unrepentant. Yes, he said, Costa was "annoyed" that he had not been informed about the distribution of the booklet and he had suggested the authors redo the document to correct certain misinterpretations.

"Of course this was impossible," Lascaris said. So it was agreed that an article critical of the booklet, which is being written by a French Dominican, will be sent to all the parishes that had received "Church and Ministry."

"This could further the dialogue," he said.

Onze jeugd is niet gek geworden : Our young people are not crazy

Mrs. Van Eekelen, explains that in the Netherlands there is too much emphasis on treating dyslexia and not enough on preventing it. And prevention is always better than cure, particularly when there exists no clear cure for dyslexia. 60% of Dutch young people think in pictures or images, three dimensionally, but schools mainly teach two dimensionally. By respecting & stimulating right brain, more holistic, as well as left brain, more intellectual, activity, educators can help those prone to dyslexia to avoid it and fulfill their creative potential, while at the same time help 'normal' children develop their creativity and thus grow to be happier, healthier and more useful members of the community. The Maria.J.Krabbe Foundation for Visual Thinking developed strategies for “visual-spatial” teaching which are of value to all children, whether “problematic, normal or gifted”.

Originally known to UPF as the wife of Dutch elder statesman, Dr. Willem van Eekelen, Mw. Hanneke van Eekelen-Wentink has steadfastly supported her husband in his distinguished diplomatic and political career, which has taken them to numerous countries; she is also socially active in her own right, having been the chairperson of the Maria J. Krabbe stichting Beelddenken for nine years, and founder and, for two years, chairwoman, of International Womens Contact (see photo on A4 attachment).

This talk was planned to be given in Dutch / het nederlands, but may be changed to English. We will aim to help both English only & Dutch only participants feel at home, we will endeavour to follow our principles: to be multi-dimensional.

UPF-NL to celebrate UN Family Day

It is surprising and rather disappointing that there is virtually no event in the Netherlands, where we pride ourselves on being international and supporting the UN and other international organizations - and have a new Ministry for Jeugd en Gezin. UPF Nederland had hoped to connect with some already organized event, but finding none, we decided to do ourselves - and invite anybody and everybody to participate.

We hope you and your family and friensds can attend and would be grateful if you'd forward this to anybody you think relevant / interested.

met vriendelijke groet,
Christopher Davies,

Universal Peace Federation Nederland, in partnership with the Dutch chapter of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU-NL / Familiefederatie voor Wereldvrede en Unificatie)), will celebrate the United Nations International Day of Families, 15 May 2009, with the theme "Mothers and Families: Challenges in a Changing World", on May 15, 20.00 - 22.00, in the Christus Triumfatorkerk, Juliana van Stolberglaan 154, 2595 CL 's-Gravenhage.

We welcome the support and participation of organizations and individuals in celebrating this day and heightening awareness of the importance of the family as the cornerstone of the society, also by message if attendance is not possible. UPF Nederland maintains that it is of vital importance that we do all we can to strenghthen nuclear and then extended families (gezin en familie) in order to increase our happiness and the well being of the national family. UPF Nederland has long advocated the establishment of a National Family Day, we understand that André Rouvoet, Minister voor Jeugd en Gezin (Youth & Family) is similarly minded.

idf_bnr_v6b_tn by you.

UPF chapters throughout the world are celebrating this day, sometimes organizing celebrations themselves, sometimes participating in celebrations initiated by others. Our research has not discovered other such celebrations in the Netherlands and that is why we feel our initiative is most important. We will be happy to hear of other such events and be glad to publicize them.

UPF Nederland Secretary General Wim Koetsier announced this initiative on April 29, the day before Koninginedag, in which the Netherlands honours the Queen (and the memory of her mother) and by extension the Royal Family, and in festivities celebrates the national family of the Netherlands. Sadly, on April 30, we saw how fragile (though also compassionate and resilient) that family can be.

Coffee and refreshments will be at the church's cafeteria, it may also be possible to eat there earlier in the evening on notifying the church in advance (see contact details below), cost five euros.

More information will follow. You may also reply to this email or call 020-720838 or UPF-NL General Secretary Wim Koetsier on 020-6957440 or WFWP-NL President Rita Salaris on 070-3735938.

    UNIVERSAL PEACE FEDERATION

    celebrates the

    UN INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES

Creating a World of Peace, One Family At A Time”

    BACKGROUNDER

The family is a microcosm of the global community. If the world is to finally come to an era of sustainable peace and harmony among civilizations, that peace must be founded on this basic, most intimate social unit of humankind. In other words, the family is the central building block of society, as well as being an instrument for peace and reconciliation.

The family is universal. Regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, and religious affiliations, we are all members of families. Most importantly, the family is the school of love and ethics.

Through the lessons in our families, we learn to embrace and value all relationships, with friends, neighbors, co-workers, colleagues and strangers.

Marriage and family are the basis of human development and the core institutions for education in character, ethics, social relationships, and citizenship. Family has the ability to buttress society from the moral decline of its youth, increase in crime, drug abuse and corruption, as well as the spread of diseases, such as AIDS. In addition, it can help break down the age-old resentments that have fueled religious, tribal and civil conflict.

Throughout history, the family has successfully adapted to change. It has survived revolutions, outlived empires, and lived through the economic and social unrest of many societies. This adaptability, however, is now being threatened by a wide range of social developments, economic, cultural, and political. Now is the time to renew the family. Restoring the family is one way we can address the proliferation of social and civil problems plaguing the world today.

Global Peace Tour 2009 in the Netherlands, March 8-15

On Sunday, March 15, Universal Peace Federation Nederland held a conference and "Peace Gathering", with the theme "One Family under God: A New Vision for Peace in the 21st Century", in Van der Valk Pier Scheveningen, Den Haag. It was the culmination of a week's activity under the banner "Global Peace Tour 2009".

Service Project: Sunday, March 8, International Women's Day, Den Haag
The week began on Sunday, March 8, when UPF activists, supported by UPF Partners YSI (Youth Service Initiative, a “gap year” programme for European students, with teams in Utrecht and Rotterdam, and Frankfurt) and members of HARP (High-school Association for Research of Principles) volunteered for service at the International Women's Day “Haags Vrouwenfeest” in Atrium Den Haag. Most of their activity was related to ushering, answering questions and supporting speakers and workshop leaders, and they were grateful to receive substantial refreshments and written expressions of gratitude.

Women's Federation for World Peace and Japanese Ambassadors for Peace
The Women's Federation for World Peace, UPF's Partner organization, also exhibited at the Atrium and Japanese UPF & Women's Federation Ambassadors for Peace lent their support. Throughout the rest of the week, they visited politicians, ambassadors and business people in The Hague, briefing them about UPF and the Global Peace Tour and presenting many of them with an oriental calligraphy of UPF's slogan “Living for the sake of others”.

Conference: “Universele Waarden en Economie“, Saturday, March 14, Utrecht
On Saturday, March 14, there was a one day conference “Universele Waarden en Economie“ (Universal Values and the Economy) in “De Paraplu” ontmoetingscentrum, Utrecht.  Speakers included UPF Nederland Secretary General drs.Willem A. Koetsier, who gave an introduction to UPF, which included, relating to the afternoon's theme, pointing out that Adam Smith, widely cited as the father of modern economics, was firstly a moral philosopher; jhr. dr. P.A.C. Beelaerts van Blokland, with “Een Verkenning naar Vrede” (An Exploration into Peace); and Hans Campman (President & Lecturer, Familiefederatie voor Wereldvrede en Unificatie): “Universele Waarden en Economie”, examining the major and often contrasting, sometimes even opposing, impulses for change and development (mainly social or moral, secular or spiritual) in the second part of the last millennium: the Renaissance & Reformation, the French & American revolutions, Marxism/Communism & the quieter Christian socialism championed by William Wilberforce and Robert Owen in 19th Century Britain, which is leading today into a spiritually based desire to work for mutual prosperity. He agreed with Dr Beelaerts that the free market economy was preferable, provided that there was a moral base, the current financial crisis was a signal that we needed clearer moral values and spirituality.

After lunch, the discussion became more pragmatic, with Dr. W.F. van Eekelen: “De Europese Unie als Antwoord op economisch moeilijke Tijden” (The European Union as an Answer to Difficult Economic Times); and Prof. Marcel Canoy, economist, publicist & adviser to the European Commission: “Op Weg naar een nieuwe en rechtvaardige Economie” (On the Way to a new and just Economy), who came to similar conclusions as the earlier speakers, commenting that GDP was a very limited indication of a nation's true prosperity and stressing that non-economic factors needed more attention in order to more correctlyassess a nation's wellbeing; Robert Kennedy said that GDP measured everything except that which made life worthwhile, he was well disposed to the Human Development Index (HDI) which combined normalized measures of life expectancy, literacy, educational attainment - and GDP.

Conference & Peace Gathering: “One Family under God”, Sunday, March 15, Den Haag
On Sunday, March 15, there was the afore-mentioned “One Family under God” Conference & Peace Gathering at De Pier, Scheveningen, Den Haag. Speakers at the afternoon conference included Mark P. Brann (Secretary General, UPF Europe): “A vision for Peace in the 21st Century”; Dr. W.F. Van Eekelen: “The European Union, a Model for Peace and Prosperity”; Drs. L.A.C. Baroness van Tuyll van Serooskerken (child psychologist & therapist): “Education of Character and Family Values”; and Mrs. Maartje Bos of Stichting Ghana Haarlem:“Service Projects in Ghana”. Japanese Ambassadors for Peace visiting the Netherlands to support the Peace Tour performed a Japanese “Dragonfly dance”.

In the evening Peace Gathering, there were musical performances by Eleanor Flowers Klerkx, Sufi choir AISA and Dutch singing legend Milly Scott. Invocations were made by Rev. Jacob Korf (Protestant Christian), Abdullah Haselhoef (Muslim) and Prof. M.K. Gautam (Hindu).

Speakers included the evening's 'host'  jhr. dr. P.A.C. Beelaerts van Blokland welcoming everyone, Mrs. Janneke van Eekelen-Wentink on Three Dimensional Thinking, and Prof. M.K. Gautam reflecting on UPF's core values. Mark P. Brann gave the keynote speech “One Family under God: A New Vision for Peace in the 21st Century”, which is the core element of the Global Peace Tour.

“One Family under God: A New Vision for Peace in the 21st Century”
He expressed, “Almost everyone in the world would agree that we are living at time of global crisis. The attention of most governments, the G-20 and the United Nations is currently focused on the ongoing worldwide financial chaos. On top of that, there is the continuing challenge of ongoing conflict and violence flaring up all over the world. Even more fundamentally, we face a growing moral and spiritual crisis, evidenced in the rise of family and marriage breakdown, divorce, the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and the growing number of young people alienated from society and prone to violent and anarchic impulses.

“Another serious concern for people of every nation is the issue of human care and protection of the environment. We need to respond more quickly and more consistently to the global challenges of climate change, deforestation, deteriorating air quality, water and soil contamination, to name but a few.

“Despite these challenges, I believe that the universal appeal of the vision to create “One Family under God” testifies to the fact that we do live at a time when lasting change is truly possible, if we are able to understand the root causes of our problems. This is the main purpose of the Global Peace Tour and the Global Peace Festivals, which are promoting a platform of interfaith cooperation, strengthening the family, and a culture of service for the sake of renewing our communities and nations. We are looking for nothing less than a moral and spiritual awakening rooted in the universal vision of “One Family under God”.”

He talked of “The Dream of God”, the importance of an interfaith effort for peace, and the need for a “culture of service”; after giving examples of some of UPF's activities around the world, he finished, “Together, let us dare to dream the greatest dream of all! Let us own the dream to create “One Family under God”.”

After the speeches, Milly Scott sang a special Peace Anthem and the sublime “From a Distance” (first made famous by Bette Midler). She then galvanized everyone with “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory of the Coming of the Lord”, so that everyone was on their feet and dancing to “When the Saints go Marching In”.

Conclusion of an extraordinary occasion and an extraordinary week
In conclusion, jhr.dr. P.A.C. Beelaerts van Blokland presented Mrs. Maartje Bos (Stichting Ghana Haarlem) with an Ambassador for Peace certificate, waxing lyrical in fulsome praise of her presentation and work, and continuing with a bardic, even theatrical appreciation of everyone's contribution to the day.

It was an extraordinary occasion, which drew together people of a multitude of social, cultural, national, racial and religious backgrounds, including those of differing convictions within the same religious tradition, for example, traditional Muslims, Sufis and Ahmadis, all united in the determination to do what they could to fulfill the “greatest dream of all, One Family under God”.

It was quite a challenge for UPF Nederland to organize so many activities in such a short period of time, but one fairly new contact wrote: "It was a good day yesterday. Nice people and interesting speeches.  I was impressed to see it all went so well. There was everything; coffee, tea, a table with leaflets, guest speakers, microphones, lights... And it all worked!!  My compliments." And it was felt that not only had "it all worked", but that our activists and Ambassadors for Peace had all become closer and of one heart.

Global Peace Tour 2009 to continue until the middle of May
The Netherlands was the second country in Europe to host Global Peace Tour 2009, which began at the beginning of March with events in Japan, The Philippines, Russia and Switzerland. There will be another event in Switzerland, at the UN. European events are scheduled to run to May 5 and, worldwide, the Tour should continue until the middle of May.
    -------------------------

Postcript/Coda: The contribution of the Japanese “sisters” was no small contribution to the success of the Global Peace Tour events. On Sunday, some wore traditional Japanese costumes and some Korean. To a European that might not seem significant, merely interesting from a design point of view. But in history, emnity between Japanese and Koreans was possibly greater than that between any nations or groups in Europe, such as Nationalists (Protestants) and Republicans (Roman Catholics) in Northen Ireland, or the various groups in what used to be Jugoslavia.

One of the great accomplishments of UPF's Founder, the Reverend Dr. Sun Myung Moon has been in bringing reconciliation between Japanese and Korean people, not merely through trade agreements or political treaties, but in encouraging international marriages.
In last years' huge Global Peace Festival in Japan, Rev. Moon's son, Dr. Hyun Jin Moon passionately exhorted his Japanese audience to take new pride in their nation and its potential and responsibility to ensure peace in the region; not so long ago no Japanese would listen to a Korean suggesting what they should do – and no Korean would even contemplate encouraging Japanese to develop greater national pride.

Apologies if this notice arrives late (for a number of reasons). Some people think the Creation vs. Evolution debate is over or not important to everyday life, but that is not indeed the case; and, as in many arguments, the two sides are often arguing about different things and making points that are peripheral, wilfully trivial, even irrelevant. This evening should be stimulating.

    SCHEPPING EN EVOLUTIE :
    OVEREENKOMST EN VERSCHIL
    Drs. Jean Pierre Verstraeten

    Dhr. Abdullah HASELHOEF
    Donderdag 11 december, 20.00 uur te Amsterdam-Zuid

    Haselhoef.2003 by you.

Abdullah Haselhoef is in Suriname geboren.

Anchorage, November 23 (CNA).-Beginning December 6, ethereal chant, incense and perhaps even an ostrich-feathered liturgical fan will waft through Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage, Alaska as the archdiocese prepares for the ancient Dominican rite Mass that will be celebrated in Latin every first Saturday of the month at noon.

The Catholic Anchor reports that the successful emergence of the Dominican rite locally is keeping the tradition alive, and perhaps fueling organic development of the liturgy into the future.

By early 2009, the Anchorage Archdiocese is also hoping to provide regular celebrations of the Tridentine Latin Mass, which was the standard Roman Catholic liturgy before the Second Vatican Council (1962-65).

    A question of rites
Within the universal Catholic Church, there are 22 different rites, such as the Roman, Byzantine and Coptic, that incorporate different traditions into the Mass.
When it comes to forms of the Mass, "often we think of the Masses as 'pre-Vatican II' and 'post-Vatican II,' and it was more complicated than that," said Father Vincent Kelber — a Dominican priest at Holy Family Cathedral, where he is preparing to celebrate the Dominican rite.
In 1570, the Council of Trent codified the Tridentine Mass as "the Mass for all time," he explained. It then served as the main form of the Mass for the Latin Church until the Second Vatican Council.
The Council of Trent, however, allowed for the celebration of those rites which, at the time, had been in existence for at least 200 years, Father Kelber said.
That meant the Dominican order and others like the Carthusians, Cistercians and Carmelites could continue celebrating their own rites, alongside the principal Tridentine Mass.
Father Kelber explained that by the 1200s, it was clear that the Dominicans needed a common liturgical expression for the order's many priests who preached and celebrated Mass in varied communities across Europe. Thus, the Dominican rite was established.
While the Tridentine Mass is sometimes criticized for being antiquated, it is actually pretty new compared to the medieval Dominican rite, noted Father Kelber. The Tridentine is really "the beginning of the modern era," he said.
At Vatican II, the Tridentine Mass was replaced by the "Novus Ordo" or "new Ordinary of the Mass" as the principal form of the Mass. In that form, which most Catholics are accustomed to today, prayers are said in the local language.
    Ancient is new again
Those familiar with the Tridentine Mass will find similarities in the Dominican rite. Both are celebrated in Latin, which for centuries was the sacred liturgical language of the Catholic Church, Father Kelber said.
Additionally, in both the Tridentine and Dominican rites, priests face the same direction as the congregation — toward the altar.
The point is to be "oriented towards the one God," said Father Kelber. The Eucharist is always central, he added.
Priests also wear special vestments in the Dominican rite, but since the Dominicans "pre-date lace," explained Father Kelber, they are not as ornate as those in the Tridentine rite.
Catholics may also notice that the Dominican rite contains many signs of reverence, such as bowing, Father Kelber explained.
A penitential prayer, which the priest leads at the start of the Mass, is said before he enters into the sanctuary, "the holy of holies," Father Kelber said. Also, communicants receive Communion kneeling.
"Every movement in the Mass is purposeful and prayerful; it is embodied worship," he said.

    'Rite' for the times
While Vatican II ushered in many needed changes, the continued use of the Dominican rite helped provide stability amid the flux.
"We realize now and Pope Benedict realizes that some of the changes of the Second Vatican Council were good, but some of them were too fast, some weren't explained, some were poorly implemented and some weren't according to the documents," Father Kelber said.
The ancient Masses "helped people to cope," he added.
As part of the patrimony of the church, the ancient Mass is worth preserving, Father Kelber continued.
"It's okay to have this kind of diversity," he said.
Father Kelber said it is especially important to appreciate the "ethos" of a pre-reformation tradition, such as that of the Dominicans.
"There is a lot that the medieval times can offer," he said. "They weren't in the dark ages at all. They lived a life that we can see today is something worth emulating in many ways, because it was before the busy-ness of the modern world. They knew what contemplation was, they knew what silence was, and we don't."
    An ancient rite blooms
In the 1980s interest in the Dominican rite grew among the young friars of the Dominicans' Western Province, said Father Kelber. Interest "bloomed again in a new way" with friars, such as Father Kelber, who were ordained in the late 1990s and early 21-century.
With no formal training on how to celebrate the ancient Mass, Father Kelber said he read about the Mass and worked with other priests familiar with it.
"Preservation work is personal," he said. "It has to be handed-down. It can't be just gotten out of a book."
Now, given the growing interest in the Dominican rite, the Western and Eastern Provinces of the Dominican order are planning instructive conferences for its friars. The first takes place August 2009 at St. Albert's priory in Oakland.
Here in Anchorage, with permission from his provincial director and Anchorage Archbishop Roger Schwietz, Father Kelber has been perfecting his practice of the Dominican rite on his days off.
"There are people all over the United States and the world excited about the old rite — excited about Gregorian chant," he said. "It's not just one person here saying 'Well, I miss the old days.' It's not just something looking back, but something looking forward and a gift for these crazy times."

Russia - Islamic World group backs Russia's proposal to set up UN religious council

Jeddah, October 31, Interfax - Participants in the fourth session of the Russia - Islamic World strategic vision group, which convened in Saudi Arabia earlier this week, have said they support Russia's proposal to establish a consultative council of religions under UN auspices.

Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, deputy head of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations, told Interfax-Religion that the session's final communique also praises Saudi King Abdullah's initiative intended to promote dialogue between different religions and cultures.

King Abdullah called on civilizations to co-exist peacefully and constructively and to denounce any idea of confrontation. The king's call for "genuine dialogue, in which parties respect each other," also received applause, Fr. Vsevolod said.

The document suggests that all countries that are members of the strategic vision group should help students and teachers from Russia and Islamic countries receive academic knowledge, promote experience-sharing events involving young people and accelerate the development of an exchange program for teachers and students, he said.

The strategic vision group includes political figures, scholars and representatives of religious and public organizations from Russia and a large number of Islamic countries.

UPF Nederland Ambassador for Peace Henna Linger was recently in Suriname and visited the UPF chapter and investigated the possibility of expanding Sentinelzorg projects in Suriname. In this evening, she'll talk, in Dutch, about the work of Sentinelzorg (see below) and report about her trip to Suriname, illustrated with photos.
    -------------------------------------------------------------

Zie www.sentinelzorg.nl.

Moving the World Forward in Love
Caring for children, the leaders of tomorrow
Rev. Paul Anaegbue, with Bruce Cerew
Thursday, September 25, 8.00 pm; Amsterdam Zuid

Rev. Paul Anaegbue is a Pentecostal Christian minister from Nigeria with congregations in his native land and Spain & Italy. His passion for humanity is leading him to lessen his church ministry and focus on helping children who have been orphaned and abandoned. He now has 410 children in his care and is currently in Europe to raise funds and establish a Dutch Stichting, Foundation Rescue. He strongly promotes Bruce Cerew's book.

Bruce Cerew, now a Dutch citizen, is the author of the highly acclaimed novel War Child, which is based on his struggles as a child in West Africa and imprisoned refugee in Europe, which he had thought of as the Promised Land. He was recently invited to speak at a United Nations conference in California.

Note: It had for long been intended that Bruce Cerew, a UPF Ambassador for Peace, would speak in Amsterdam, but details had not been finalized. Rev. Paul's schedule is somewhat changeable and if he cannot come, Bruce Cerew will take his place. If Rev. Paul does speak, Bruce Cerew will also attend - and return at a later date.

Further Notes: The talk will be in English and accommodation will be made for those who need Dutch translation. The programme will also include an introduction to UPF and UPF Peace Festivals, a toast to World Peace, music and light refreshments. In general, we hold such evenings every last Thursday in the month, usually in Dutch (with English translation when needed). For more details, of this evening and UPF, email or telephone. You are welcome, but it is not vital, to inform us of your coming.

IIFWP has now, to all intents and purposes, been supeceded by the Universal Peace FEderation (UPF), especially since it is now UPF that is registered at the United Nations (technically, as being a name change from IIFWP).

Some time ago, a group UPF-NL - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/upf-nl - was opened, and Messages sent to both groups.  In future, Messages sent to UPF-NL will probably not be send to IIFWP-NL so if you want to continue to be updated, you are advised to become a member of UPF-NL if you aren't already.

This group will stay open, since some new people may find their way here via a search engine and also there  are entries in Files, Photos and Links that may not be in UPF-NL.

UPF founders in helicopter "incident": official statements

It has been widely reported in the media (some articles below, probably there are more articles in languages other than English, and apologies if there are one or more repeats) that on Saturday, in Korea, the founders of the Universal Peace Federation, Rev. & Mrs. Sun Myung Moon, were in a helicopter that was variously reported as having being forced to land or to have crashed, because of bad weather.

Below are three communiques from UPF's affiliate Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU):

    1. On July 19, the chairman of UPF-USA, Rev. Michael Jenkins, sent emails to members of FFWPU-US, of which he is President, reassuring them that "True Parents are confirmed to be fine and in good health". Rev. & Mrs. Moon are referred to by FFWPU members as True Parents. Increasing numbers of UPF Ambassadors for Peace refer to them as Father & Mother Moon.

    2. The next day, July 20, FFWPU International Headquarters released a Statement from FFWPU-Korea:

Rev. Moon and other passengers escape serious injury in helicopter crash

Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon and eleven other passengers involved in a helicopter accident in South Korea Saturday afternoon were not seriously injured in the incident, according to church spokesman Dr. Chang Shik Yang.
The helicopter, a Sikorsky S-92, was on its way from Seoul, the South Korean capital, to the Cheon Jeong Goong Museum, located in Seorakmyeon, Kapyeonggun. The helicopter left the Jamsil heliport at 4.40pm and ran into sudden inclement weather about twenty minutes later and made an emergency landing on a nearby hill.

All thirteen passengers and three crew members were taken to the nearby Cheong Shim International Hospital. Two of the party suffered minor injuries. Ms. Jiseon Lim (30) is being treated for bruised vertebrae and Mr. Kibyeong Youn for light abrasions. Both are expected to make a full recovery, according to Yang.

The crew and the other passengers, including Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon, were treated and released and are resting and recuperating. Shortly after all the passengers had safely exited the helicopter, it caught on fire and was destroyed.

Rev. Moon, now 88, has maintained a busy schedule of religious and charitable activities since returning to his homeland. The party was returning from a meeting with church leaders in Seoul when the accident occurred.

Rev. Jenkins later added, "We sincerely thank God for protecting our True Parents and True Family at this time and offer our sincere prayers for their continued safety. We are deeply grateful that Father and Mother Moon were not hurt and that all the passengers are safe.  Two of our sisters who had minor injuries will recover fully.

We ask all families to increase their devotion to God and service to our fellow man.  We are in such an important time in God's dispensation.  We have received word that Father and Mother Moon are totally grateful for God's protection and that they are more determined than ever to give everything for the blessing and strengthening of families, the unity of all faiths and the realization of a global culture of peace based on faith in God and love for all humanity.

Sincerely, Rev. Michael Jenkins, President, FFWPU USA
    --------------------------------

Contrary to the impression given by many in the media, while Rev. & Mrs. Moon hold a very special place in the hearts of FFWPU members, many UPF Ambassadors for Peace and others, Rev. Moon himself discourages people from being too preoccupied with him and his family, but to rather focus on how they can best embody the ideals of love & service that he teaches and seeks to follow, and he has asked on more than one occasion that they refrain from always wanting to know where he is and what he is doing; and his youngest son, Hyung Jin Moon, the newly appointed President of FFWPU-International and FFWPU-Korea, in a recent sermon said that his father had been very ill in the early 1990s, but he had not wanted it publicized since he did not want people to be worried about him.

Incidentally, some of the articles have factual mistakes and at least one carries a photo that is presumably meant to be Rev. Moon, but is in fact Rev. Kwak, a close associate and co-chairman of UPF-International.

Sun Myung Moon released from hospital

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) The founder of the Unification Church was released from a South Korean hospital Sunday, a day after he and 15 others were injured when their helicopter crashed on a mountain near Seoul.
The Rev. Sun Myung Moon, 88, was injured slightly when the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter crashed during an emergency landing and burst into flames in Gapyeong, about 37 miles northeast of the capital.
Moon was released from Cheongshim Hospital on Sunday, his spokesman Ahn Ho-yeul told The Associated Press.
Also injured were Moon's wife and other members of his family. His wife and several others remained hospitalized Sunday, Ahn said, but did not give further details.
Moon and the others were "safe," the church said in a brief statement on its Web site.
A South Korean transport ministry official said investigators recovered a cockpit recording device to help determine the cause of the crash.
A group of aviation experts from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board were scheduled to arrive in South Korea on Monday for a joint investigation, he said. The official asked not to be identified by name because the investigation was not complete.
Moon founded the Seoul-based Unification Church in the 1950s. It owns hundreds of companies around the world, including the United Press International news agency and the Washington Times newspaper.
The church's doctrine is a mixture of Christian, Confucian and traditional Korean values, and Moon's followers believe he came into the world to complete the work of Jesus Christ.

Moon, 15 others flee copter crash
    Bad weather cited in mishap
    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jul/20/moon-15-others-flee-copter-crash/ - Jung-bo Park, SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON TIMES - Sunday, July 20, 2008

SEOUL | A helicopter carrying Unification Church founder the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and 15 others, including his wife and at least three grandchildren, crash landed and burst into flames on a mountain northeast of Seoul on Saturday.
The Rev. Moon, 88; his wife, Hak Ja Han Moon; and the others managed to flee the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter before it exploded into a giant fireball about 35 miles northeast of Seoul, according to news reports from the site.
The Rev. Moon founded The Washington Times in 1982.
Bad weather contributed to an emergency landing just over a mile from the chopper's destination, a heliport atop Cheong Shim Hospital, which is owned by the Unification Church.
The hospital is part of a huge resort used for church workshops, the original destination of the passengers, who were taken to the hospital instead.

AGENCE FRANCE-PRESS/GETTY IMAGES The wreckage of a Unification Church helicopter that crashed northeast of Seoul on Saturday was still smoldering hours after church founder the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and 15 others escaped, most of them unhurt.

"Everyone is OK except for one lady, whose back was injured," said one church member, who was attending a workshop at the resort when the crash landing occurred.
Church spokesman Dr. Chang Shik Yang said two passengers suffered minor injuries. Jiseon Lim, 30, was being treated for bruised vertebrae, and Kibyeong Youn for light abrasions.
Both are expected to make a full recovery, Dr. Yang said.
YTN television news showed one person being carried away from the smoldering wreckage on a stretcher.
In an official statement from the Unification Church, Dr. Yang said the helicopter was on its way from Seoul to the Cheon Jeong Goong Museum, located in Seorakmyeon, Gapyeonggun.
The helicopter left the Jamsil heliport at 4:40 p.m. and ran into sudden inclement weather about 20 minutes later and made an emergency landing on a nearby hill.
At the time of the crash, heavy rainfall and fog blanketed the area. A dense forest canopy at the crash site helped cushion the fall, police and fire officials told local news media.
The crew and the other passengers, including the Rev. Moon and his wife, were treated and were resting and recuperating, Dr. Yang said.
Church members believe the Rev. Moon is the messiah sent to finish the uncompleted mission of Jesus Christ.

Moon was slightly injured, a hospital official said. Members of Moon's family, including his wife, were also hurt, and one person suffered a serious back injury, fire official Kim Wu-jong said.

The helicopter was carrying 16 people when it crashed and burst into flames, Kim said.
Moon and the others were treated at the nearby church-affiliated Cheongshim Hospital in Gapyeong, about 37 miles northeast of Seoul, hospital official Park Sung-kwon said.
Moon received an X-ray and his condition was not serious, Park said.

No details of his injury were given, but the church said in a brief statement on its Web site that Moon and the others were "safe."

Police and fire officials said the cause of the crash was under investigation.

Church official Kim Dae-yeol said the helicopter was flying to Cheongshim Hospital from southern Seoul. The Gapyeong area has several church-affiliated facilities including a museum and schools.

Moon founded the Seoul-based Unification Church in the 1950s and the conservative Washington Times newspaper in 1982. His church owns hundreds of companies around the world.

The church's doctrine is a mixture of Christian, Confucian and traditional Korean values, and Moon's followers believe he came into the world to complete the work of Jesus Christ.

In 2004, Moon was the center of a coronation ceremony in Washington at which he declared himself the Messiah. He also became widely known for performing mass weddings of followers.

Rev Sun Myung Moon's helicopter reportedly hit bad weather
The founder of the controversial Unification Church, better known as the Moonies, has been hurt in a helicopter crash in South Korea, reports say.

Rev Sun Myung Moon, 88, was among several people on the aircraft when it made an emergency landing at Gapyeong, 40km (25 miles) east of Seoul.

News agencies quoted officials as saying Rev Moon's injuries were slight.

The casualties were taken to Cheongshim Hospital, which is affiliated to the Church, a hospital official said.
A police spokesman said that the helicopter had been carrying Rev Moon, his wife Han Hak-Ja, 11 relatives and three crew members when it ran into difficulties in heavy rain and came down on a hillside at Gapyeong, AFP news agency reported.

A 38-year-old woman on board was seriously injured as the helicopter burst into flames on landing, AFP said.

Police and witnesses said the crash happened in a mountainous area near the hospital at about 1710 (0810 GMT), the agency said.

South Korea's CBS radio said Rev Moon and his wife were given MRI scans for possible back injuries and moved to a VIP room.

A spokesman for the South Korean transport ministry said that the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter had made the landing after encountering bad weather.

The National Police Agency said the helicopter was carrying Moon, his wife, 11 relatives and three crew when it got into difficulties in heavy rain and came down on a hillside at Gapyeong, 40 kilometres (25 miles) east of Seoul.

A police spokesman told reporters Moon, his wife Han Hak-Ja and 13 others were slightly hurt while one woman aged 38 was seriously injured as the helicopter caught fire after landing.

They were taken to Cheongshim Hospital at Gapyeong, where the church has several facilities including the hospital.

The church, whose official name is the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, posted a notice on its website describing the accident as minor. It said Moon, 88, and his wife are safe.

"The two parents are safe so family members should not be worried," it said, referring to Moon and his wife and the church's followers.

South Korea's CBS radio said Moon, his wife and five others needed hospital treatment. It said the church founder and his wife were given MRI scans for suspected back injuries and moved to a VIP room.

The transport ministry said in a statement the Sikorsky S-92 made the landing after encountering bad weather.

The church, one of the world's most controversial religious organisations, was founded in Seoul in 1954. It evangelises in some 200 countries, church officials say.

In April Moon's 28-year-old son Hyung Jin Moon succeeded his father as its top leader.

    INVITATION

"Crossing Cultures & Celebrating Diversity" - RYS Netherlands 2008, Utrecht, July 7-16
We invite you to take part in our upcoming ten day Religious Youth Service (RYS) project in Utrecht, The Netherlands, July 7-16. We want to bring together a group of 25 young adults between the ages of 18-30, from different countries, cultures and religions throughout The Netherlands and Europe, under the theme:

    Crossing Cultures and Celebrating Diversity

The RYS is a service-learning project with a special emphasis on building personal leadership and peacemaking skills through experiential service and intercultural dialogue. Together with other youth and members from the local Utrecht community, you, as an RYS participant, will be involved in creating a community Peace Mosaic that will provoke inter-religious thought and stand as a lasting symbol of intercultural co-operation.

The RYS programme incorporates many different activities within its schedule. The morning begins with meditation or a religious service that is offered by participants and staff representing different religious traditions; and is usually continued with the work project (creating the peace monument). The afternoon programmes vary from sightseeing and visiting places of religious worship (including mosques, Hindu & Buddhist temples and churches) to themed talks from guest speakers and educational seminars relating to the community and peace building. In the evenings we will have discussions and/or cultural performances, before closing the day with time for personal reflection.

In its 20-year history, RYS has often provided participants with the environment in which to realize their own hidden potentials. It has also given many an insight into how they could contribute actively to society at large when they return to their homes and communities.
On behalf of RYS, we are excited to offer you the opportunity to spend 10 days living with an intercultural and inter-religious group and together deepen your understanding and appreciation of your own beliefs as well as those of others.

The participation fee of 100,00 will cover all activity costs, including food and accommodation. The fee could be this low because of Utrecht city government funding.

For more information regarding the RYS Netherlands 2008, email ychandler@youthserv iceinitiative. org. We look forward to hearing from you!

    Crossing Cultures & Celebrating Diversity
Misunderstanding - Indifference Conflict - War

You may ask why? One of the fundamental reasons is simply: we cannot accept the difference between us.

Many of us know what it feels like to express our religious beliefs and then be mocked, discriminated against or shamed. Now, picture an environment in which genuine interaction can occur; where our diverse beliefs and backgrounds are commonly appreciated; and strong, lasting friendships build bridges between our cultures.

This summer, Religious Youth Service comes to Utrecht, to bring together young people from different countries, cultures and religions who are ready to make a change. The programme will include educational workshops, inter-religious dialogue, visits to various religious and cultural sites and guest speakers.

However, the main focus will not be talking about our differences, but working together with the common vision of creating an artistic, intercultural mosaic. Throughout the project, you will work closely with the community and we will close with a celebration including cultural performances and entertainment.

If you are aged 18-30 and want to know what a lifestyle of harmony and appreciation amongst religions really feels like, join us from July 7 to 16. We can make it happen if you can.

On May 12, the official "kick off" ceremony for the Global Peace Festival (GPF) in Paraguay was held at 7:30 pm in the prestigious Excelsior Hotel. The hall was overflowing, with no place to sit, and even no place to stand. Everyone looked excited to be part of what they expect to be a great festival in July 2-5.
Before the event GPF committee members were anxious about the turnout, as Omar Halasa, GPF Executive Director, said, We prepared for only around eighty people. We even set up tables for a buffet dinner in the back of the room so it would not look empty. However, contrary to their expectation, by 6:50 pm staff had to take all the tables outside to make a room for more chairs, and in the end, more than three hundred people attended the launching of the festival.

    "Latijns-Amerika: derde of onze wereld?
    Drs. J.W. Bertens
Diplomaat, ex ambassadeur in o.a. Latijns Amerika

On Thursday, May 29,  Drs. J.W. Bertens spoke, in Dutch, at the UPF-NL Dialoogcentrum in Amsterdam Zuid on the topic "Latin America: third or our world".

The evening was opened by UPF-NL General Secretary Wim Koetsier, who gave a short introduction to UPF, the principles and practices. He mentioned that he had been at a meeting the previous week where there had been a discussion about missionizing, whether it was a good thing or not. He said everyone was a missionary of one sort or another. Politicians were trying to make their point, businesses were trying to sell their product, it would be very boring if noone promoted anything. After showing a video about
    UPF, he introduced Dr. Bertens.

Dr Bertens started his talk by giving a summary of his career. He had studied history at university and had entered the diplomatic service, serving in a number of countries, including Africa and the Middle East, and as Press Chief in the Foreign Ministry in the Hague. He had served the longest time in Latin America including six years as Ambassador to Central America, based in Costa Rica. He had later been a member of the European Parliament, representing D66, and was currently, among many other activities, vice-chairman of NCDO (Nationale Commissie voor Internationale Samenwerking en Duurzame Ontwikkeling -National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development).

Latin America had been colonized by Spain, except for Brazil, by Portugal, in accordance with a ruling by the Pope and for 300 years had had exactly the same government system , centred on the King, supported by the government, military and church (Roman Catholic).  After the Battle of Waterloo, 1815, and the Congess of Vienna, Spain and Portugal left Latin America, but the centralized system stayed the same, the king being replaced by juntas, and generals, who, like Simon Bolivar, created the countries of today. There was always a boss.

These new countries had not fought each other, though there had been civil wars, but though they spoke one language (Portuguese was very similar to Spanish), they did not cooperate very well. Though Latin Americans tended to be conservative, there was a tendency towards new voters, native-Americans (Indians), non-establishment people, youth to bring change, one new president had proclaimed my victory is the end of a long, sombre night in our land, the end of an era (of domination by the church, politicians and army by Spain).

There was certainly an oil and food crisis coming. Latin America had tremendous natural resources, Argentina was immensely rich, there was more oil on the coast of Brazil than in Saudi Arabia, and Latin America was said to have one third of the worlds fresh water.

Since 911, the US had been focused on Afghanistan and the Middle East, in particular on Iraq. There was surprisingly little trade between North and South America. India and China were both showing interest, their presidents had made visits.

Dr. Bertens discussed various ideas about how the world would develop in the coming years, quoting from a book, Divided World: The struggle for primacy in 2020, and about how the West should relate to other countries. Since the end of the cold war, the US had been the only super power, but now other countries and blocs were emerging.

The theme running through his talk, which became explicit as he reached the end, was that Europe should seek an alliance with Latin America. Europes post WW2 experience of building the European Union could be valuable in helping Latin American nations cooperate with each other and Latin Americas huge resources could help Europe deal with the shortages that were surely coming.

The European influence was still central to the culture of Latin America, and yes, Latin America is our world.

    Future evenings include:
    June 26: "Wereldmachten en Vrede: China en de V.S. - Jhr. dr. P. Beelaerts van Blokland, Edelman, hooggeplaatst, bezield en ervaren bestuurder;
    July 24: "Zuid Afrikaanse politiek in historisch perspectief" - Prof. em. dr. S.W. Couwenberg, Political Sciences & Public & Social Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam;
August 28: "Economie en Vrede" - Prof. dr. Meine Pieter van Dijk, economist & professor of Water Services Management at UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education.

Drs. J.W. Bertens staat bekend als een flamboyante diplomaat. Hij was ambassadeur in o.a.

Pinkster (Pentecost) Festival Amsterdam: an appreciation

On Tuesday, May 15, UPF-NL Secretary General Wim Koetsier attended Amsterdam kostbare - kwetsbare stad, interactief stadsdebat (an "interactive debate" about "Precious Amsterdam - vulnerable city"), part of Pinksterfestival Amsterdam (see details below), and shortly reported on the evening at UPF's weekly Wednesday public lecture at UPF's Dialoogcentrum in Amsterdam Zuid.

He had recommended the Pinksterfestival to UPF contacts when he first heard about it and the Tuesday evening increased his desire to support it and any such future initiatives. He enthused about the broad representation at the evening, mentioning a Jewish youth leader, an Egyptian member on the Coptic church and a Moslem student of youth, and about his short conversation with Festivalleider Gabril Jansen.

In the opening plenary session, under the leadership of journalist Joost Divendal, a panel of four - Ahmed Marcouch (deputy mayor, Slotervaart), dr. Gover Buijs (philosopher ,Free University), Huub Verweij (theologian and VVD city council member) and dr. Manuela Kalsky (director, Dominican Study Centre Nijmegen) - discussed the assertion that introducing God in the public domain would have destructive effects. The audience clearly rejected this notion, but the politicians in the panel warned of the forcing of ideas upon others in the name of God - while the other panel members pointed out the potential of religions inspiring people to do something good for the community.

In his Wednesday report, Mr. Koetsier opined that the politicians were actually suggesting that religious people might do something that politicians themseves regularly did when trying to convince others to accept their (political) view, invoking something higher like "in the interest of the country or party", "because of climate change" or "for the protection or safety of the people".

After the plenary discussion, the 70-80 participants then  split into three groups to discuss Wijk en Straat - Levensbeschouwing en Spiritualiteit - Jeugd en Toekomst (Neighbourhood and Street - Philosophy of Life and Spirituality - Youth and Future). He decided to join the last one.

In introducing himself and UPF to the group, he had first said "if God is the Creator, He has no intention of acting in a destructive manner. It depends on people how God can be manifested and too often the name of God is misused. To correct this, it is important that religions work together based on universally shared values and that we cultivate our spirit and character." He gave the example of  UPF's Character Education programme, that was first developed in post communist Russia (as promised by UPF founder Dr. Sun Myung Moon to Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in support of his reforms), by UPF staff in conjuction with Russian educators. He also emphasized the importance of education about Human Rights, at the root of the founding of the United Nations, but so often relegated to the sidelines, or worse, and was pleased when the group chairperson later reported this at the closing plenary session.

Returning to the discussion about whether religious groups' missionizing should be limited, Mr. Koetsier reflected later on how socialists often wanted to keep this under control, but that while UPF advocated tolerance and cooperation between religions, and thus decried dogmatic propoganda, there was no reason why religious people and groups should not air their point of view: after all, he repeated, politicians and other social activists were often very vocal in promoting their causes.

He reported that the evening's chairperson, Ahmed Marcouch, had emphasized the importance of acting from a position of love - but that love might sometimes have to be tough in challenging people who behaved destructively in the public domain.

In the concludion, it was stressed how people with different views of life needed to meet each other, focus on what was common to all of us and work together based on their shared values.

UPF's Wednesday evening meeting, notice of which had been forwarded to the Festival organizers, but rather late for discussion about inclusion in the programme, was about humans being spiritual as well as physical. Lecturer Hans Campman commented that while humanity had understood something about this throughout history, substantial scientific understanding was now becoming clearer, though many in the "West", particularly in Europe, still actively asserted that man was merely a physical being.

Wim Koetsier has long asserted that the most important contribution to help improve social conditions was Character/Spiritual Education, as Rev. Moon did when he met Pres. Gorbachev, who remains a friend of UPF.

UPF-NL Peace Festival
Sunday, April 20, 2008, Huize Glory, Bergen aan Zee, Nord Holland

UPF-NL held its first Peace Festival of 2008 on April 20, starting 10.00am, in Huize Glory, Bergen aan Zee, Nord Holland.

After a group song, an invocation, and a solo,  Bless This House, by Eleanor Klerkx, MC Hans Campman introduced the guest speaker.

Sheik Abdul Aziz Bukhari, who lives in the old city of Jerusalem and has long been active in seeking to bring peace to that area and works closely with UPF on its Middle East Peace Initiative programmes, spoke very easily and fulsomely about the importance of religious people working together for peace. He himself is very much involved in interfaith dialogue for peace and promoting the understanding that the children of Abraham are brothers and sisters, who should not fight. He said appreciated very much "Father Moon's" Middle East Peace Initiative and teachings, which focuses on reconciliation by reaching out to the heart of the people of Israel and Palestina and bringing them together for dialogue and service projects. The Sheik asked us to become like candles giving light. We need many candles and if all these candles combine their efforts, a strong light for peace will shine and change the world.

Sheik Bukhari asserted that God loved Jerusalem, but the people were suffering. "And everyone is suffering because of Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the heart of the world, and when the heart is sick, everyone is sick". He said there was so much suffering and bloodshed "and everything in the name of God".

But God does not want this bloodshed, it is evil. Why does a brother kill his brother? To be in power or to get rich? But what about when you die? All your power and wealth will not help you. Everyone will have a Judgment Day. God will ask what you have done in your life. Death comes suddenly without telling you. God asks what you have done. You have no memo, no words come; but God knows. In this world, we lie to each other and ourselves, but God knows your purpose, there is no way you can lie to God. Truth always comes out. We forget what we are given to do for our next life. We live a short live here, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 years, then on to the next life. When you travel somewhere, you normally prepare your bag, but, unfortunately, many people forget about the second life. You cant live in this life just for yourself, you need to wish for others even more than you wish for yourself.

It is difficult to hope for others more than you hope for yourself, but Father Moon has this vision. You are like the candle, burning yourself to give live to others. You need to be like a mother living for her baby. How often does a mother wake up to change the diapers, feed and look after her baby. Thats how we should be for others, not just our own children. Nobody wants to do that, but thats what we should do.

In old times, if a person knew his neighbour was without food, he would give; but no more, we are always busy, doing things for ourselves

To be an Ambassador for Peace is not for self, but for others.

Theres a story of a person who was drowning. Another person, in a boat, said if you dont know how to swim, why did you jump in the water? We try to lecture others about right and wrong, without reaching out with our hands to help. The drowning man says,
Get me back on my feet, then you can lecture me.

Everyone tells those in the Middle East what to do, without helping people get back on their feet. Father Moon comes to the Middle East and through MEPI holds conferences and other activities to get people back on their feet, helping others as Ambassadors for Peace.

If I call you a bad name, I quickly make an enemy. But it takes much longer to make a friend. You must take time and listen. Father Moons trips make friends by the hundreds, because they reach for your heart, try to find the soft spot to be attached to. To lecture with a heavy voice, pretending you are smart, elegant, smart, will not go to the heart. Smiling is the key to opening the heart. You cant reach someone with a hard, harsh heart, you need a soft voice. This we use to make contact with the enemy.

Jews call Arabs the enemy and vice-versa. Go back 4,000 years. Father Abraham had two sons, Ishmael and Isaac. The two brothers separated, Ishmael went to Saudi Arabia, Isaac stayed in the Holy Land. They are the ancestors of the Arabs and Jews. In reality, they are brothers, but the reality is also that they harm and kill each other.

We may think of God as full of power; but He is also full of love. We forget what love means. We must prepare ourselves to be Ambassadors for Peace. You must live for a good cause, for others, otherwise your life has no meaning or value, just to eat, work and die. That is not the purpose of God. We must be a messenger, to bring a message of love and peace, and thats the true purpose for each person in this world. We want to be that person, to be somebody, to live and work for a vision.

You may want to be a doctor, but a doctor needs patients or he has no purpose. You must have a vision, have a purpose in life and live for it. Father Moons vision is to help others, to be the candle to help others see. But what is the effectiveness of one candle? If you have 100 candles, you are very strong. You cannot work for peace alone. As such, you are just one candle in a dark room. But when we are many, we can be seen by others. Working as a group, a community, we can make changes, as one family.

Im 60 years old, I dont know how long Ill last. Dont count on us, we need fresh, strong blood to work for peace.  Most groups come to my center in the old city, the Via Dolorosa, near the first Station of the Cross, everyone knows me. God Bless you and help you and keep well.

Hans Campman thanked Sheik Bukhari, this touched us and explained further how the Via Dolorosa was said to be the path that Jesus walked on the way to his crucifixion and a major part of the Stations of the Cross.

UPF-NL Secretary General Wim Koetsier gave the main UPF Peace Address. Sheik Bukhari had said it all already, he began, then explained he would like to convey something of Father Moons vision of how to bring true peace. UPF-NL was in the process of being registered; he responded to Sheik Bukharis remark that it was already registered (presumably he meant with God), yes, but Caesar requires it; for God, all goodness is registered and He wants to take out evil, but that also requires our efforts. Much of his rich introduction to UPF was informed by the document UPF-NL is using for its registration in the Netherlands.

UPF asserts that mankind is created to live as one family under God, the source of True Life and True Love. God is the source of universal values which are taught by all religions and may in addition be observed in nature, also in our own bodies. The highest qualities of human beings are spiritual and moral. Certainly, we need economic growth for society to flourish, but we also, actually first, need spiritual growth: and that would also benefit the economy! The family, nuclear and extended, is the best school of love and peace. Education needs to include training for marriage and family life.

People often said that one should not mix religion and politics, even arguing that religion caused conflicts, but was that true?  A Vietnamese fishing boat was sunk by a Chinese ship over a fishing dispute. Officially they were comrades, all citizens of atheistic countries, but putting aside religion did not avoid conflict. So-called left wing dictators tended to cling on to power more vigorously than military right wing dictators. Mugabe was the latest example. The Chinese sent arms to support him and the South African government said they had no legal ways of stopping the ship carrying them. But the dockers refused to unload the cargo. The leader of the opposition party in Zimbabwe said it would have been better to send food! Conflict does not come fom religion, it comes from within me, the individual and religious teachers want to help solve that conflict if you really want to listen.

Our physical life was preparation for the spiritual world. In the womb. We were fed by the placenta, but that was discarded when we were born: our lungs and intestines had developed when we were still unborn and now enabled us to breathe and digest food. Rev. Moon said that on earth we needed to develop our spiritual lungs, to breathe love.

The history of Europe was full of fighting, but after World War Two, nations developed the vision of working together. France and Germany started practically, to limit their ability to develop their own arms industry by cooperating in the European Coal and Steel Community.

Maybe in the Middle East a canal could be dug from the Mediterranean to the Dead Sea. The difference in level would enable electricity to be generated. This would be of material benefit and could also be a project to unite the people in the region.

Rev. Moon proposed linking America and Russia across the Bering Strait. Why? Practically, it would help the development of Siberia, Alaska and Canada, where there were lots of minerals and energy. It would also be a project on which the US, Russia, China and Canada could work together. Indeed it would be a world project. It had been estimated that it would be a similar stimulus for development as the railroad had been in the early USA. Maybe this project would also be a way of benefiting from the effects of climate change. This was very much on politicians agendas now. Wars also created a lot of carbon dioxide and destroyed nature as well as people. Regarding the ongoing concern about energy, he commented that many thought energy was limited but scientists had mentioned that the sun gave us as much energy in one minute as we used in a year!

"We should worry more about how to follow the guidance of the Creator than about energy problems and climate change. God is a God of abundance! If we follow his guidance prosperity and peace will come. Now everything has been prepared to leap forward into the society God intended. Let us work together to fulfill God's dream!"

His talk was followed by communal singing of Song of the Banquet, inspired by the ideals and aims of UPF.

Six members of Youth Service Initiative (YSI), a training programme for young people, talked of their experiences in Ghana, West Africa, supplementing their speaking with a slide-show.

Yebuny Chandler explained the YSI was a peace project and one basic thing she had realized was that peace was not a thing, but about relationship, an attitude, a way of life. We heard of what went wrong with Cain and Abel and Isaac and Ishmael, our challenge was to try and help, save the drowning person, first in our team then try to inspire others, especially other young people, creating a youth culture of service.

YSI is based in Utrecht and has participated in projects in Israel/Palestine, with Faith Link, and more recently in Ghana, West Africa. They are now each developing their own projects, working with new partners. They hope to create Youth Service Initiators.

In Ghana, they worked on two projects in late March and early April. On the first, they had worked with Religious Youth Service (RYS), 25 altogether, with a trainer from the US and a Ghanaian organizer (Yebuny was impressed that while many young Ghanaians wanted to seek a better life in another country, this young man wanted to stay in Ghana, to do what he could to make things better). Christians, Moslems and Unificationists worked together for two weeks to lay the foundation for a village canteen and library.

Flora Robertson particularly loved the streets being full of music and the children calling eboni (white man) when they saw them, she would like to go back for a few months to help looking after children.

Yebuny said the experience had helped her understand Rev. Moon's exhortation "think globally, act locally" and had given her more oomph (energy, power, commitment) to carry on with work at home. The people they met had a difficult life, they had to work hard, but their relationships were a central point. We think we Westerners can help Africa, but we can learn so much from them.

Though the status of women is still generally rather low, the chief of the village was actually a woman, and she had made Yebuny a Sub Queen Chief, with the title Queen of Friendship. For a day, she had been waited on, not allowed to do anything, she was glad it was at the end of their visit! Through the relationship, friendship, you could really build something.

Following the YSI presentation, Christopher Davies sang his Sparkle Song and Wim Koetsier announced upcoming UPF activities in the Netherlands and abroad. Referring to MEPI, he mentioned that Rev. Moon initiated many projects, though aware of UPFs limitations, hoping others would join in and support and carry on. Thinking of Huize Glorys location on the sea, he suggested we follow Sheik Bukharis image of candles, to join together so we might be a lighthouse or a 2,000 candle power beamer for world peace. With the cooperation of people like Martin Luther King III, he felt we were helping people realize we need to develop more vision, not just economic plans.

After a Toast to World Peace, Eleanor Klerkx sang Last Night I had the Strangest Dream, followed by William Blakes Jerusalem in honour of Sheikh Bukhari, and everyone enjoyed an excellent lunch.

Ambassadors for Peace attending included Henna Linger, who is the founder of Sentinelzorg, a social help agency with a difference. She recently spoke at UPF-NLs centre in Amsterdam; Bruce Cerew, from Africa, who announced his soon to be published  book War Child; and Sayed Taheri, chairman of Stichting Nasr which suppports projects in his native Afghanistan, who was very happy to meet Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bukhari, who invited him to visit him in his home. Commenting on Sheikh Bukhari talking of 100 candles being strong, and the more individualistic culture of the Netherlands being rather lonely compared with the communal, extended family culture of Afghanistan, Sayed Taheri mentioned that in Afghanistan we say God is one, but humans need to live with others.  Of course, Rev. Moon says, more explicitly than most other teachers, that God also needs company, most especially that of humans. Fariba Hessabi & Ferry Wever, two of the many AfPs working for democracy in Iran, were unable to attend but they sent their best wishes. Also present, from Almere, were members of the Sufi group Association Internationale Soufie Alawiya (AISA), based in France and headed by Sheik Khaled Bentounes, who was interviewed by Wim Koetsier for UPF-NL and awarded an Ambassador for Peace certificate when he visited his congregation in Utrecht, who had been asked to greet Sheik Bukhari on behalf of their spiritual master.

UPF-NL Peace Festival, Sunday April 20,  Bergen aan Zee, NH

On Sunday, April 20, UPF-NL will hold the first of its 2008 Peace Festivals, in Huize Glory, Bergen aan Zee, Nord Holland, starting at 10.30am.

These festivals are connected with the UPF-International Global Peace Festival (GPF), which has as its theme One Family under God and its goal includes world wide support for peacebuilding and the implementation of the United Nations Global Development Goals. GPF promotes and celebrates people and programmes that contribute to reconciliation, mutual respect, harmony and cooperation among the members of the whole human family.

In partnership with faith-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, and the private sector, GPF encourages programmes that strengthen God-centered marriages and families, facilitate intercultural and interreligious cooperation, and foster a culture of peace and service.

Ongoing programs culminate in the Global Peace Festival that consists of three main components: an international leadership conference, a social impact program, and a public celebration.

In 2007, Global Peace Festivals were held in Germany, France and Britain and a number of other countries, culminating in the Philippines, attracting some 200,000 participants.

Sundays event will have as special guest and principle speaker, Sheik Ahdul Aziz Bukhari, a Sheikh of the Naqshabandian Religious Method (Sufi) and head of the Uzbeke Community in Jerusalem. He lives with his family in the Old City of Jerusalem, on the Via Dolorosa and for many years has worked to encourage interfaith dialogue between all faiths: I believe in peace for the Holy Land. We meditate and pray for it at our center. This continues the Sufi tradition of my family.

Sheik Ahdul Aziz Bukhari is a contact and friend of UPF-NL Ambassador for Peace Abdullah Haselhoef.

In addition to Sheik Bukhari, a number of UPF-NL Ambassadors for Peace will affirm their commitment to peace and support for UPFs Global Peace Festival as a way to bring together people of goodwill and promote positive efforts to improve the the circumstances of our one worls family and envirnment.

The programme will also include music and a video introduction to UPF and GPF and will conclude with a celebration lunch.

For more details, call 0346 572989 or 020 7720838 and, for directions, 072 5813741, or reply to this email.
