Re: IT INSET for Library Staff
Great start to the term ..... enjoyed our sessions .... here are a few follow-up notes to the starter day of module 2 last Friday and also to the ALESS meeting this week …..
What do we have to do now?
- Continue with any module 1 work that is outstanding .... specific details are at http://www.shambles.net/ITinset/Library/Mod1sum.doc (this includes action plans)
- Keep working on those IT skills ... especially those that are most relevant to you and need now ... e.g. Microsoft Word / Excel / Powerpoint etc. ... options to help you with this are:
- other staff in your school
- courses in Hong Kong, details at http://www.shambles.net/priv_areas/teachandss/INSET_IT/index.html and "YES" there are a number in English as well as Chinese.
- online courses, details at http://www.shambles.net/publ_areas/schoolcomm/ITskills/index.html
- the help/tutorial functions in whichever software you are using .... click on 'help' or pressing the first function key "F1"
- ask your (ESF) ICT co-ordinator if you can have access to one of the "European IT Driving Licence" disks to borrow ... this is also known as the "NETg disk" .... or maybe your co-ord would put the software on one of your harddisks for a while ..... we (ESF) did buy one disk for one named 'non-teaching' staff in each school in September.... you might like to ask your INSET co-ordinator who that went to.... remember that this is just for Microsoft Applications skills training.
- for those of you who do not have access to this disk then you might like to visit the companies website ... http://www.netg.com/ .. to do the course online (but costs)
- Microsoft have their own online training at http://www.microsoft.com/office/using.htm
- on the LAICT site try LIST http://libict.cant.ac.uk/List/welcome.html .. which is 'IT skills' orientated.
- me ... husbands .... wives ... sons/daughters .... friends/relatives .... mums/dads .... school technicians .... your principal!
- Have a browse around DISTRICT ... http://libict.cant.ac.uk/DISTRICT/DISTRICT.HTM
- Update your online ICT Skills Audit http://www.cant.ac.uk/libict/
- Possibly most important …. Work our way through the Module AUDIT for modules 1 and 2 ….. remember that this is a record …. You do not actually upload evidence …. You just explain where it might be or what it is that you have done to demonstrate what it is asking…… this is s great way to organize ourselves so we know what has been done and what needs doing.
Module 3
Some details to note about module 3
- Details are at http://www.shambles.net/ITinset/Library/Modules/module3.html ... but not many yet.
- Facilitators are David Streatfield and Sharon Markless
- Date for meeting of us all is Friday 27th April ..... no venue agreed yet
- School visits by David/Sharon Thursday 28th April .... if you would like a visit then let me know asap. Purpose of visits ... so Sharon/David can see some of our provision ... but more importantly it would be your agenda ...
- talk with you about your work
- give comments on specific aspects of your library (identified by yourself) ... if you are planning any changes to the library then this would be extremely useful.
- talk with other staff (Senior Mngmnt/ICT co-ord/line manager) about the course, or libraries in the UK or .... whatever might be relevant to you.
- No pre-module work has been set for module 3
Evaluation
Could you please post your evaluation of the module 2 day to me so I get it by Tue (23Jan) .... I'll then collate and send off to Nick/Andy and Lib.Assoc.
Thanks for those who filled them in at the ALESS meeting.

OPS.. just seen some really great work/display sheets on the LAICT webboard about searching on the internet (I should have looked before the ALESS meeting) … these are just Word documents and so can be modified after you have downloaded them. They are under Module 3…. From Lynda Truby … so just use the search facility to find her name and the attachments. There are also some other sheets uploaded in Module 3 by Christina Finch ….
Module 2 Website
I have FTP'd the pages (or will do over the weekend) you made on the course to a folder on the ESF (esf.edu.hk) website which in on a machine at AsiaOnline. It can be accessed at http://www.esf.edu.hk/libinset/
Screen Shots
I have attached a word document that I used to print the screen shots that were in your envelopes last week ... just in case you need to print them out yourself to give out or display..... but I've compressed it just to test to see if you can 'uncompress' ;-) (Now should I offer a tee shirt for this ... NO! .. too easy!)
That’s IT ... have an enjoyable Chinese New Year holiday
