About the ICG-D Mailing List
Updated 4/23/2006

ICG-D is the official mailing list of the International Costumers Guild. It is
intended for, but not limited to, the general membership of the ICG. Its
purpose is to promote discussion about all aspects of costuming and costuming-
related activities. The sick jokes, constant punning, and occasional bouts of
silliness are just a by-product of gathering creative minds together in a
forum such as this.

The official mailing address is ICG-D@yahoogroups.com. While the list is
generally unmoderated (that is to say, messages don't get checked before being
posted to the list), the moderators of the list will not hesitate to put a
poster on moderated status should the situation call for it.

New members are kept on moderated status until they have posted to the list
several times. This is done to prevent spammers from attacking the list. The
moderators will grant full posting privileges as soon as we're sure you're not
an evil nasty spammer.

Policies of the ICG-D mailing list:

1) No Flaming. The moderators will issue one and only one warning.
If the flaming continues, all parties flaming will be unsubscribed.
We expect participants to treat each other with respect and courtesy.

2) No SPAM! Suspect addresses in subscription requests will have their
identity verified and be removed so fast the air will crackle.

3) No Chain Letters. I know some of them pull at your heart strings
or have you fearing for your hard drive, but most are inaccurate
(at best), out-of-date or fake (at worst). When given a chain letter,
your best policy is to visit the Urban Legends page at www.snopes.com
and see if it's mentioned out there. Odds are it will be.

4) When you change the topic of conversation, do everyone a favor and apply
that change to the subject line as well. Keep the subject line short. Do
not use the subject line as the first line of your message.

5) Every so often the list will drift off topic. The moderators' general
belief is that there's nothing wrong with a bit of side conversation from
time to time so long as there aren't too many on-topic discussions going
on and being interfered with. If the side discussions are going on too
long, the moderators will politely clear their virtual throats and ask for
an end to things. Please do so. Moderators do terrible things when they
     get cranky.

6) When replying to a post, please copy the pertinent parts of what you're
replying to so that everyone gets a point of reference. Do not, however,
copy all 500 lines of said post before replying.

7) Please avoid one-word or one sentence replies. Make your posts meaningful.

8) If your email account starts bouncing messages, we will make one attempt
to correct the situation. If this attempt fails, or the bouncing returns
after a successful restoration, your email address will be removed from
the list. Please be aware that a number of freemail account holders such
as Hotmail and others have limits on how much mail can be received and
will bounce messages when that quota has been exceeded.

9) There are several ways you can read messages on the ICG-D list:

     a) Receive individual messages to your email account
     b) Receive digests, sent in groups of 25 or in one-day packages
     c) No-email; read messages out at the ICG-D folder of Yahoo Groups

You can contact the moderators to have your email delivery changed, but
if you have a Yahoo Profile you can make these changes yourself (or in
the case of the third method listed above, just go out to the site and
     read to your heart's content).

The ICG-D list's home page is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ICG-D/

For those of you loathe to provide any provider with personal information,
let me point out that the Webguy's Yahoo Profile shows him to be Mr_Gengar,
a resident of the Pokeville Vermillion Forest, and no one from Yahoo has
     called him on it yet.

To register with Yahoo Groups, visit the main Yahoo Groups page at
     http://www.yahoogroups.com and click on "Register".

It's not a phish, but don't answer it. Grouply is a legitimate service,
but it does seriously compromise the security of private yahoogroups
(yeah, this is a public group, so that's not a real issue) by
republishing group messages and it spams the other subscribers of
yahoogroups when someone subscribes.

I request that <rubberpike@...> be unsubscribed and banned from
the ICG-D group for adding our group to Grouply.

Isn't that a little harsh without even asking for an explanation?

He may not even be aware of the spam invite. After all, it is not
like there is anyone on this list who is so perfect that they have
never made a mistake before.

To be fair... all but one mod has been a bit busy at CC, and we're all just
barely getting home. While the hotel did/does have free wifi, that doesn't mean
anyone has much time to use it. And our chief mod (Ann) has been quite
pre-occupied all weekend as a Historic Judge.

what I can tell you about the offender is that they only just joined May 3, the
address is out of UK (whether it is a legit address or a faked one, I couldn't
say). I think we all got the grouply spam, and I found a request in the pending
box about listing all said person's grouply groups. I deleted it. As Andy said:
grouply is a legit service which in theory is great, but in reality is very
risky for anyone who joins, and any of their friends they email/spam and any
group that gets caught into it.

No it is NOT harsh. There isn't NEARLY enough explanation given by the
originator to ligitimate his/her request. It is clearly an invitation
to disaster.

Hi -

We ended up with a small pair of orange handled scissors after the Historical
Masquerade. We think that Gypsy got them for us, but don't know who she might
have borrowed them from for us. If they're yours, send us and address and we
will return them.

Thanks -

Sorry about the partial message.  My computer keyboard had a temporary fit.

Correct message below:

Have any other costumers heard about or experienced this.

My niece, who participates in historical re-enactments at The Festival du
Voyageur in Winnipeg, has told me that they are experiencing a lot of problems
of theft of their  items used in demonstrations.  One example was a carpenter
who had some of his tools stolen while demonstrating historical woodworking
techniques.  These tools are either valuable historical items or expensive
reproductions.  They are now considering that if everything must be put in cases
to prevent theft, how do they demonstrate anything.

Apparently this Feb was the first year this has ever been a problem, and they
are wondering if it has something to do with the depressed economy.  I think it
may have something to do with the fact that almost anything can be sold on line.

Appreciate any thoughts on this.

Barb

I know SCA'ers who have had their armor stolen from the beds of their
trucks. I feel that dealing with the public in any environment, you
need to keep an eagle eye on everything. I lost most of my Future
Fashion Folios while having them on display at guild tables at local
cons (I have since been able to replace them all). People seem to
think they're catalogs of costumes they can order. It's been a while
since I've done a guild table, but I stop putting things out that
people would probably walk away with.

Actually I believe you will find that once someone joins Grouply,
which touts itself as a way to read all your groups in one place
on-line thus making it attractive to people who are on Yahoo and
G-groups and lords knows what else and read on-line, that Grouply
itself sends out the automated invite to all your groups unless you
find something in the small fine print to decline it.

At least, that is the explanation given on a few other groups where
the person in whose name the invite was sent was just as surprised at
it popping up as anyone else. *shrug*

Of course, your tolerance for people making innocent mistakes may be
much less than mine as people vary..... I've never been a big fan of
the "one strike you are out and no we won't even let you explain"
attitude, particularly since it is so unevenly applied. We all know
that if the invite had come from one of the regular posters the
assumption would have been a mistake and a ban never would even have
been thought of, much less suggested and the condemnation is mostly
because this was not a long term member or someone who is know
personally to you all *shrug*

Stephanie

I would also like to thank ALL of our quilters who entered. It was
tremendously gratifying that, knowing how busy you all were putting
together complex competition and hall costumes, and preparing for your
panels, workshops and demos, that you still took the time to make an
extra something, to honor one of ours in this way. Bobby would have been
moved to tears, I know--and also very proud of you. I know that for
some, it was a first quilt attempt. It was a lovely display, and is
being put into a slide who as we speak!!

Look forward to seeing at least some of you at Worldcon, and thank you
again for a marvelous exhibit/contest. Thanks also to JoAnn Abbott, who
stepped in almost at the last moment to judge our entries. There was an
award for the Best in Show entry, generously donated by Vicki Warren.
It's my fault that I forgot to bring it to hte con (I probably would have
forgotten to give it to the winner), but it will be mailed soon.

Yours in costuming, Lisa a>
