About the ICG-D Mailing List
Updated 4/23/2006

ICG-D is the official mailing list of the International Costumers Guild. It is
intended for, but not limited to, the general membership of the ICG. Its
purpose is to promote discussion about all aspects of costuming and costuming-
related activities. The sick jokes, constant punning, and occasional bouts of
silliness are just a by-product of gathering creative minds together in a
forum such as this.

The official mailing address is ICG-D@yahoogroups.com. While the list is
generally unmoderated (that is to say, messages don't get checked before being
posted to the list), the moderators of the list will not hesitate to put a
poster on moderated status should the situation call for it.

New members are kept on moderated status until they have posted to the list
several times. This is done to prevent spammers from attacking the list. The
moderators will grant full posting privileges as soon as we're sure you're not
an evil nasty spammer.

Policies of the ICG-D mailing list:

1) No Flaming. The moderators will issue one and only one warning.
If the flaming continues, all parties flaming will be unsubscribed.
We expect participants to treat each other with respect and courtesy.

2) No SPAM! Suspect addresses in subscription requests will have their
identity verified and be removed so fast the air will crackle.

3) No Chain Letters. I know some of them pull at your heart strings
or have you fearing for your hard drive, but most are inaccurate
(at best), out-of-date or fake (at worst). When given a chain letter,
your best policy is to visit the Urban Legends page at www.snopes.com
and see if it's mentioned out there. Odds are it will be.

4) When you change the topic of conversation, do everyone a favor and apply
that change to the subject line as well. Keep the subject line short. Do
not use the subject line as the first line of your message.

5) Every so often the list will drift off topic. The moderators' general
belief is that there's nothing wrong with a bit of side conversation from
time to time so long as there aren't too many on-topic discussions going
on and being interfered with. If the side discussions are going on too
long, the moderators will politely clear their virtual throats and ask for
an end to things. Please do so. Moderators do terrible things when they
     get cranky.

6) When replying to a post, please copy the pertinent parts of what you're
replying to so that everyone gets a point of reference. Do not, however,
copy all 500 lines of said post before replying.

7) Please avoid one-word or one sentence replies. Make your posts meaningful.

8) If your email account starts bouncing messages, we will make one attempt
to correct the situation. If this attempt fails, or the bouncing returns
after a successful restoration, your email address will be removed from
the list. Please be aware that a number of freemail account holders such
as Hotmail and others have limits on how much mail can be received and
will bounce messages when that quota has been exceeded.

9) There are several ways you can read messages on the ICG-D list:

     a) Receive individual messages to your email account
     b) Receive digests, sent in groups of 25 or in one-day packages
     c) No-email; read messages out at the ICG-D folder of Yahoo Groups

You can contact the moderators to have your email delivery changed, but
if you have a Yahoo Profile you can make these changes yourself (or in
the case of the third method listed above, just go out to the site and
     read to your heart's content).

The ICG-D list's home page is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ICG-D/

For those of you loathe to provide any provider with personal information,
let me point out that the Webguy's Yahoo Profile shows him to be Mr_Gengar,
a resident of the Pokeville Vermillion Forest, and no one from Yahoo has
     called him on it yet.

To register with Yahoo Groups, visit the main Yahoo Groups page at

There's a LiveJournal site for Minneapolis and vicinity SF fans to
check in. If you're one of them, or know the status of anyone, you
might consider adding to the list.

I'm hoping that all my friends and family who live in the area are
safe, and my heart goes out to all who were affected by this horrific
event.

Hi,

Is anyone on the list going to Further Confusion? And is anyone looking for
roomates?
Eric and I really want to attend for the first time this year, but had no
idea that the rooms would be booked up this far in advance. Also, we don't
know if we'll know anyone there, which feels really wierd because I can't
remember the last time I've attended a con where I didn't know anyone at
all.

I looked at the overflow hotel, but it's not even close to the main hotel.
Is anyone here a San Jose local, and can tell me what walking several block
in a fursuit in january would be like there? I'm not at all familar with San
Jose weather.

I'm sorry to be so brief, but we're trying to get the house cleaned
for a post-convention costumer dead dog party.

The Archon/NASFIC masquerade had 27 entries last night, down from its
usual mid-30s count but this can be explained by two groups having 16
and 18 members, respectively.

I am very proud to report that the SLCG entry, "Carnivale", won Best
In Show. The only downside is that this was my daughter's first time
in a masquerade, and now she thinks it'll be like this every single time!

(very tired, very proud to have been a part of the entry)

Hi everyone!

It's been hot and muggy most of the time but the nights have been cool for
sleeping.

The shopping is great as always, and the battles begin tomorrow.?? Attandance
hasn't hit 10,000 yet but it just might by the end of the War.

I've taken five belly dance classes so far and they've all been fun.

Bye for now!

Just about every SLCG member who competes - and even a few who normally
don't - were involved in some sort of presentation, comprising about 1/4 of
all the entries. And almost every SLUT entry received some sort of
recognition.

More comments and observations to come soon. Hopefully, once MD Sheila
Lenkman has recovered, she'll post the awards (or she may send it to me to
do so, if she wants). In the meantime, I may at least post the running
order with descriptions.

We should eventually have some fan photos up on the Gallery in the near
future, and we'll let everyone know when.

Agh. My bad.

What's especially funny is, while rummaging through our mail, I found
a postcard from the Gem & Mineral Show, inviting me to their next
get-together August 17-19: "Treasures of the Earth".

We ought to go in costume. :)

As it turns out, I had the info after all. There will be some general
comments about the con and the masquerade in another letter. Here we go:

There were a total of 27 entries -I don't have the breakdown of Novice vs.

I believe I know them. (Jr.)Junior Fan, (N)ovice, (J)ourneyman, (M)aster

1. "Three Ninjas and an Angel" - Rebekah Krumney. This one was actually
sort of a bogus entry - it was a cover to set up MC Vic Milan because it was

Guille, Mandi Arthur, Al Horhmann, Tammy Mohning, Jan Mohning, Rober Cook,

As it turns out, I had the info after all. There will be some general
comments about the con and the masquerade in another letter. Here
we go:

There were a total of 27 entries -I don't have the breakdown of
Novice vs.
Journeymen vs. Master. I know some of them, so I'll put the class
in where
I believe I know them. (Jr.)Junior Fan, (N)ovice, (J)ourneyman,
(M)aster

1. "Three Ninjas and an Angel" - Rebekah Krumney. This one was
actually
sort of a bogus entry - it was a cover to set up MC Vic Milan
because it was
his birthday. The audience was invited to sing "Happy Birthday" to
him.

2. "Save the Penguins, Save the World". (M) Sallie Abba, Greg
Aba, Allan
Guille, Mandi Arthur, Al Horhmann, Tammy Mohning, Jan Mohning,
Rober Cook,
Megan Harper, Nikki Harper, Lyndsey Griffey, Rick Lancaster, Laurre
Bremen,
Diane Dunlap, Sheril Harper and Andy Wheeler.

A 16-penguin extravaganza ending with a dance.

Workmanship Award - Best Use of Found Materials.
Judges Choice - Best Movie Adaptation

3. "Shadow Beast". (Jr.) Taliesin Roth. This young fan continues
to show
potential as a costuming force to be reckoned with. A malevolent
figure in
red and black.

Workmanship Award - Honorable Mention
Most Impressive Light Show

4. "Saturn Girl of the Legion of Superheroes". (Jr.) Dorothy
Muncy. Good
stage presence by this young fan.

Judge's Choice - Most Cosmic Superhero

5. "X-babies Trade Paperback" (Jr.) Chantelle and Lucian LaCroix.
I can't
remember her costume off-hand, but his was the old-school
Wolverine. Great
costumes by Mom or Dad.
(Bruno says "She was Phoenix.")

Workmanship Award - Best in Class, Junior
Best in Class, Junior Presentation

6. "Bad Touch" - (N?) Mary Weed, Kevin James, Holly Vantilburg and
Daniel

This was a junior class entry that scratched.

Vantiburg

7. "The Phantom of the Opera: Rehearsing Il Muto" (N?) Lee (Lily)
Burns,
Tika Yaeger and Thomas Walker

Novice

8. Mirkwood Jedi - (M) Steve Swope and Catherine Swope. Jedi
Knight seen
through the lens of Lord of the Rings.
( Steve says "Let me add here my thanks to Rhiannon Jones, who
originally designed it for the CC24 Future Fashion Folio, for giving me
the go-ahead to compete it.")

Workmanship - Best Detail Work

9. "Monty Python and the Life of Bill Murray" - (J) Dave Kanoy, Eric
Schulte, Tim Mueller, Mark Klages, Bruce (the Lesser) Hinterleitner
and Ryan
Hinterleitner. A cross genre entry. The monks from "Holy Grail"
doing the
graduation drill from "Stripes".

Workmanship Award - Honorable Mention
People's Choice Award

10. "Puff! I'm Draggin'!" - (N?) Teri Maue. I can only describe
it as an
excersiser working her "tail" off.

Novice

Slattern Award (for the performer not of the SLCG having the most
fun on
stage)
Spazzy Award (for sick and twisted humor)
Best Original Concept

11. Queen Solitaire - (J?) Gail Barber. A bellydance costume with a

There are also a series of videos going up for the Masquerade as well. LOTS
of really good costumes this year. So many personal favorites, not to
mention a lot of SDCC first-timers. Not sure how many were first-time
masqueraders, but it was great to see fresh blood.

The username that's uploading them is 'acparadise'.

I have a project where I want to make a lot of fabric roses in a
variety of colors & sizes. So I'm looking for fabric suggestions.

I know that most of the bridal patterns that use these usually make
them out of silk or satin for the look but what fabric do you think
might be easier to handle & come in a large variety of colors?

Do you think cotton might work? I'm sure that soe of you have made
them, what kind of results did you have? I just remember the satin
being too slippery.

Are they usually made from ribbon so you don't have to worry about raw edges?

I just googled "ribbon roses" and found lots of different instructions.

Nora,

try taffeta or faille, that should be less slick to work with and
stiffer to give you some nice form...some of it is already out because
of Halloween, you can usually find some moiree like taffeta about this
time of year..I may have even seen some at Hancock on Monday...Lots of
color stuff I past, just don't remember what it was.

If you think your average congoer thinks that the way masquerades have
evolved over time is a good thing, you might be surprised. Read this:

There is just a point where you have to accept that someone is going to hold
on to a very dumb opinion.

It's best to just let it ride at that point, and hope they figure it out on
their own, if they care to.

Some people don't mind their chocolate mixed with their peanut butter.
Others think its blasphemy. Easier to just eat your chocolate and peanut
butter and not worry about how the other guy eats it. A small turn and the
guy next to you is at your back ;D

Dany's right - you just have to ignore some people. And while those of
us who actually know Mr. Hicks are aware of how difficult he can be to
ignore, his comments don't surprise me.

I think it's slightly amusing that he thinks the majority of the
audience agrees with him. We know that's not true. Nor do I think the
Archon ConCom or MD agree with him.

Being aware that Mr. Hicks is opinionated if erudite, pompous & fond
of the sound of his own voice; I'm still a little surprised that he's
a snob. Only SF&F for him, thank you! (Strict adherence to his
personal definition, too, please.) And preferably only Literary SF if
it can be managed.

If everyone thought that way, then Archon's Masquerade would be very
small instead of the fabulous venue it is. Coincidentally, I suspect
so would the convention itself. While I do pick up books there & have
attended the occasional author panel, SF lit is not why I go. I go for
all the variety of things one usually sees at an SF con.
If the con were to exclude anything not strictly affiliated with SF
that would eliminate many gamers, cosplayers, a lot of dealers, etc.
Further restrict it to Literature & you lose the LOTR, Star Wars &
Star Trek crowd (What?! No Klingons at an SF con?!) cause they're
media not books.

Just my 2 cents.
