It'll probably need a separate overpass bridge installed to get the trail users farther away from the oncoming traffic.  There should be an engineer investgating this soon, right Dave?

Hi Sue,

I've started using that dirt road to bypass the closed section of the path.  Why do you believe it will take a lot of money to fix that section?

Hi Everyone,

I'm a new member of the I-275 yahoo group, and I wanted to introduce
myself. My name is Dean Johnson, and I live in the far southeast
corner of Plymouth Township, near Joy and Eckles. I both run and
ride my mountain bike on the trail, and I usually get on at the little
opening in the Crossings of Canton apartment complex. I almost
always ride south into the remote section of the path. Just this
morning I rode that way, and got attacked by a red-winged blackbird
just south of Koppernick. Also saw a coyote.

I'm a big advocate of reopening the section between Michigan Ave. and
Van Born. By the way, I saw someone write that the trail ends at the
dump at Van Born. It doesn't end there. You just have to go under
275 and pick it up on the west side of the highway.

I look forward to hearing from the rest of you!

****URGENT*****

Folks!

Nancy's Rails to Trails Conservancy (or whatever the new name is
now), is hosting a legislative day this Wed. in Lansing.

I'm definitely going to help out and meet with several
senators/legislators about I-275, is anyone else intersted in going
with me? I'll be leaving pretty early 'cause I want to be there to
help with the set up at 8 am. It will last all day, one of my
meetings with a Senator is at 4:30.

Please let me know ASAP so we can coordinate.

Thanks much!

A northern extension of the trail is now an "under study" trail in Oakland
County's Trails Master Plan. Since it would likely be within the M-5
(MDOT's) right-of-way, I don't expect much movement on this until MDOT
completes their non-motorized master plan for the county. Right now they're
working on St. Clair county's plan.

Is there any talk of north/westward expansion of the I275 trail down I-
96 west toward Novi/Wixom? It seems like a pretty uneventful end to
the trail at 11/Meadowbrook. Any thoughts? Has anyone ridden lately?

Friends,

I just spoke to Oakland County and they gave us Sunday, July 10th, as the day they'll send a crew out.  Obviously, more hands make light work so, the more the merrier.  I have tools for this crew to use that were donated by the N'ville Home Depot so, please bring your own with you if you have 'em.  They'll contact me a week or so before to work out the specific details when the date draws closer.

If any of you have ridden the trail lately, what is the condition of the trial just S. of 9 Mile Rd.?  That's the section we left off at last time.  I need to fix the flats on my MTB and ride it myself to see what it's condition is.  If any of you know any other spots in Oakland County on this trail or, even another, that need tree trimming/weed clearing work, let me know 'cause I'm not sure if we can keep this crew busy all day with just what we left from last year.

sickles or gas powered weed whackers
metal tined leaf rakes
pruning shears

Also remember to bring water for yourselves and maybe a snack or power bar or something to keep up your energy.  Long work shirts and long pants are recommended to minimize the scratching when handling all the material we cut down.

Yes, there is talk of this.  Greg Johnson, Regional Engineer for our area and our connection with MDOT, has mentioned that he'd like to connect to the Huron-Clinton Trail some day.  There is also talk of continuing up M-5 although, I'm not sure of the details of such a connection, it'd probably have to go under the freeways.

I'm working on trying to get the next clean up day on the path scheduled with Oakland County.  I'll let you know what date they give us.  There was a little left to do in Oakland County from last year and then we can start working with Wayne County on the southern part.

sounds to me like the pavement was laid over clay or some other
unprepared material. Road construction to do it right requires lots
of sand and gravel before laying the final surface. I've even seen
the black weed barrier laid down before the concrete is poured.

I would work on the maintenance plan--try to stay away from
herbicides if we can. Maybe in sections we can rebuild the trail the
correct way to keep weeds from growing.

The rail trail folks should have some suggestions. Maybe we can ask
them.

Is there a plan to get the trail routed around the dump?

Yesterday I rode the pathway from Ann Arbor Road until it dead-ended
into the trash hill. There is a lot of work to be done! The worst
spot was probably the bridge that had several holes in it and very
few railings about 1.75 miles into the ride.

But, the issue that a noticed that could be even more expensive and
time-consuming, are the weeds along the path. In my NON-
professional opinion, the weeds that are taking over the path are
called phragmites. Phragmites are considered highly invasive, VERY
difficult to control, and almost impossible to eradicate. There are
several methods of trying to control them, but the more successful
ones use a herbicide which can be expensive and raise environmental
concerns.

Perhaps MDOT has some ideas or success in dealing with these plants,
but the people I spoken with at Ford Land have not had much luck. I
think this is an issue that should to be addressed (how to clear
them now and a maintenance plan for the future) before money is
spent on the path itself.

Please add this to an Issues List for some further research &
discussion.

I have been following this on the trails-and-greenways group.  How are the cleanups/maintenance funded?  Local government, county, state, trail organization?  How is this scheduled?  We have a 32 mile trail, multi-jurisdicitional trail, to maintain.

Thanks in advance,

Rick,
In Greene County, Ohio, we clean our trails every week with a broom or
blower. This helps keep debris from building up along the edge. Every year
or two we actually use an edger to cut the edge of the asphalt to prevent
root encroachment. Prior to paving we treat the aggregate base with a soil
sterilant. This keeps weeds from growing up under the surface for many
years. To keep our pavement in good condition and to extend its life we have
all of our trails on a 5 year rotation for treatment with GSB88 sealer. This
product made by Asphalt Systems contains gilsonite which restores oils to
the upper surface and fills minor voids with a black silica sand. This also
prevents the surface from being slick when wet. It makes it look like you
repaved and usually dries within an hour of application which means you
don't have to close your trail for long periods. I wouldn't waste my money
on any of the standard driveway products.

Subject: [trails-and-greenways] Maintenance of Asphalt Trails

I am wondering if any of you could share how you maintain the surface and
edges of asphalt trails to prevent grass and soil/debris from creeping into
the trail surface from the edge and effectively narrowing the trail over
time.  Currently we have a two mile loop in a park that is maintained by one
very energetic 80 year old volunteer (see below), with help from volunteer
organizations and me.   He uses a Husquvarna power tool with a edger (metal
blades) attachment and a weed whipper attachment to keep the trail edged.
As we extend the trail, and he shows signs of wear and tear (no sign yet!)
we will need to get the appropriate tools and tractor attachments.  We also
blow the trail with hand, gas-powered leaf blowers.  If any of you have a
list of essential equipment and any written guidelines and maintenance
procedures you could share, I would greatly appreciate it.

One other question.  Our trail surface is 2 years old.  I occasionally
wonder if we should try to seal the surface to enhance its longevity.  I
have read conflicting opinions on the benefits of sealing asphalt surfaces.
If it was effective, I am also concerned about runoff since so much of our
trail is adjacent to Cayuga Lake and Inlet.  I imagine there would be a
trade off between preserving the existing surface (putting off resurfacing
for a certain length of time) and applying a petro-based sealer with
associated possible runoff.

Thanks in advance for your advice and assistance.

for what its worth...here in the southeast, unless asphalt cracks, we
really don't coat or seal so that the asphalt can "breath". You are also
correct regarding stormwater sheet flow...if you have a way which to
contain and slowly filter the runoff off of the low side...no problem.
Without going to elaborate edge protection systems...we haven't found a
better solution yet other than providing a 2' aggregate shoulder consisting
of a full-depth section to include VDoT standard 6" of 21-A compacted to
95%...this is what we call wet, pug-mil. Then we have a atv with a spray
applicator and 4 times annually whe have a jet nozzle set-up for herbicide
applications in the aggregate.....

If you find something better....keep us in mind

good luck

Brian and I rode the northern portion this weekend--approximately 12
miles from 11/Meadowbrook to Ann Arbor Road.   It's in pretty good
shape for mountain bikes.  We noted where we could clear a little
brush (but you can easily ride around it now) put a few stop signs,
do some pothole filling, etc.  My next ride will be from Ann Arbor
Road as far as it's safe to go southbound.

There's a sign at the trailhead at 11/Meadowbrook that is down, but
all that really needs to be done is to remove the sign off the post
and put on the backside of the signpost already there.  I'll try to
take care of it this weekend.

I think one of the goals we have is to recreate a readable sign we
can either post along the trail or include in a small map, in boxes
on signposts--these could be like realtor information posted on
realty signs.  A future goal would be to get businesses/restaurants
along the way to sponsor ads, coupons, etc. to pay for the maps.  At
present, I would do what Dave did with the meeting notice and
laminate a map and tie-wrap it to the signposts along the trail.

I have a photography project for you.  I think an appropriate photo to represent the trail would be the charming little bicycle art in the back yard of a home in Livonia--it's red-reddish orange and it's made from sheet metal--has a basket where the owner puts flowers and it's pointed at and very near the trail.  To find it,I would park at the corner of Ann Arbor Road and I275 and go north about a mile, and it's on your right.  It actually would be more visible if you were going southbound from the tril (maybe get on at Hines Dr.)   Just an idea. Let me know you're interested in the project.  Otherwise the next time I go I'll take my camera.

Glad you have some information about the condition of the trail in
that area. I like the idea of contacting area businesses for help with
the maps. I had thought about calling a few businesses when we hold a
big ride to see if they would "donate" anything for the riders. Is
that allowed? Just a thought. Thank you for your time on the trail.

To describe the detail of accessing the trail from hines Drive.

South and Eastbound Hines Drive (traveling toward Dearborn): Major
cross street is Haggerty. Traveling eastbound, look for the double
overpass which is I275. Travel underneath the two overpasses and there
is a gravel road to your right. Travel up this road, past some
boulders at the end of the parking area and take a right at the trail
in the woods. This will bring you up a small hill and along a sound
barrier wall.

North and Westbound. Major cross street is Newburgh. Travel
approximately a mile past Newburgh and you'll see a set of double
overpasses. take a left on the gravel road just before the first
overpass and then follow the instructions above.
