I think you would want to have the suction side of the pump below the lowest point possible relative to the engine possible so you don't dry run the pump. i.e....

I get that part but what I'm wondering is if it's better to push the coolant into the engine or if it's the same to suck it through or if you are pushing it...

I think it is in from thermostat (bypass)/radiator out of coolant pump directly into the engine. So you are sucking it through the thermostat/radiator first....
