Re: [Hornblower-L] Favourite moments

sorry, that new ending to 'the commodore' is awful. CSF didn't neatly wrap up
his stories- though admittedly the ending of 'the commodore' is more up in the
air than most others. who on earth wrote it? (I hope it wasn't a Forester, or
I'm going to be very embarrassed).

What's this bit about a different ending to "The Commodore"?
Both my Penguin paperback, reprinted 1972, (first published by
Penguin
not Joseph 1956) and my "Admiral Hornblower" (Penguin 1990,Joseph
1966) have the ending "What the devil was Brown doing, staring at him
like this?".
Is there a different ending somewhere?

Yes Indeed. An edition published in the United States 1986 by Little,Brown
and Company and registered in the Library of Congress Catalogue. that year.
This eight page final chapter explains what had happened to Hornblower, he
had contacted the Typhus at Riga and had been in a coma for four weeks and was
lodged in the King of Prussia's Palace at Konigsberg. Attended by his loyal
Brown.
Bush had taken the Squadron back to England but the Clam had returned from
England with dispatches. He ordered Captain Freeman to take him back to England
with him and eventually landed at Sheerness. The local Admiral entertained him
and explained that Braun had been hanged. The Admiral's barge took him up to
Rochester and then he and Brown went on by chaise to Smallbridge where he
arrived in time for Christmas with Barbara and Richard.
