This is a website for people interested in the Individual Differences in Learning Association (IDL). Our group provides information and support for the parents and teachers of highly able children with learning disabilities (including ADHD, dyslexia and Aspergers for example) in Howard County, Maryland. Members who are part of the Howard County community, either living or working in Howard County or having children who attend Howard County Schools would receive the largest benefit but we often have discussions that can benefit from wider participation. The concept of having a child who is twice exceptional, having both exceptional strengths and weaknesses is difficult for some parents and educators to comprehend. There is even a tendency for some to think of these children as lazy or unmotivated. As part of an effort to emphasize that a child can participated in a gifted program and yet have problems learning through traditional methods, the acronym IDL - for individual differences in learning - was chosen by the group. Promoting a positive view of children who are twice exceptional is a priority. We stay away from traditional 'labels' as much as possible.

Our largely parent-run organization includes many professionals (psychologists, counselors, and mediators) and works closely with the Howard County, Maryland public school system to communicate the needs of this twice-exceptional group of students. Our focus is two-fold: teacher education and family support. Our monthly speakers are listed at www.gifteddifferentlearners.org.
