Claudia Lee, of Liberty Paper Mill in Liberty, Tennessee, and Jess Jones, were
chosen, along with two other teams, to be part of the inaugural Tennessee Master
Craft Artist / Apprentice program. This new program will be a seven month
apprenticeship beginning November 1, 2009 and ending June 15, 2010.
Funded by the Tennessee Arts Commission, in partnership with the Tennessee
Association of Craft Artists, to provide a concentrated learning experience that
encourages and invests in the continuation, advancement and creation of
Tennessee craft by recognizing the role of the master craft artist / apprentice
relationship as a way to preserve the state's cultural heritage. Jess Jones,
resident fiber artist at the Appalachian Center for Craft, will be blogging her
experience as apprentice in the hopes of engaging a larger audience and creating
on-going dialogue.
Everyone,
Ok, then. I won't be there either!
I will be sure and see it though. Susan

I couldn't make the last meeting, but I don't remember seeing anything about a
reception in the newsletter. I called the ACC and no one notified them about a
reception, so I assume that there will not be one. Last time we organized it and
brought our own food there.

Everyone,
I don't have my contract for the upcoming show, and while I could
have lost it, I don't remember getting it. Will there be extra copies
at the meeting on Saturday?

Hi All,
I hope your spring is going well; warmer weather is on the way!
I just received notice that Tech's graduation ceremony is May 9 and I am
scheduled to attend (part of my faculty responsibilities). I conferred with the
chapter officers and decided this: Saturday, May 9 is our meeting , from 5-7pm
at the Craft Center. The only change is the time = it will be a supper potluck
meeting so the day is not broken up for the rest of you.
Jessica Jones will be giving a presentation on Facebook. The main office of TACA
has one, and it is a good way to connect with present and potential customers.
Laurie Hall will be sending out a reminder notice soon. If you have anything you
want placed on the agenda please contact Laurie and Cc it to me:
Wheelnkiln2@... and jbrady@...
Thanks, and I hope to see you at the Spring Fair and at the chapter meeting,
Jeanne
Hello TACA members,
I hope that you are staying warm. This is a reminder about the
February 6 deadline for the TACA workshop that is at the Craft Center
on February 21. Now is the time to send your application in. The
topics are digital photography and doing craft fairs. You can
attend both sessions because they are both being offered twice. In
fact, you could attend the same topic twice. Let me know if you need
another application or more information.
See you there,
Tim Hintz
This law has already been passed (August 2008). If you are an artisan
or crafter who makes and markets any items designed for children age
12 and under, you need to check out the consequences of this law,
which makes it illegal for you to sell a product to a child aged 12 or
under if that specific product has not been laboratory tested and
certified as lead free. (The testing process is very expensive and
the item being tested is destroyed during the testing process - so
much for one-of-a-kind children's items.)
This law applies to items made of natural products, fibers, etc, as
well as clothing and toys, glass, metal, wood - in short, anything
marketed to children.
As a side note, the same law also makes it illegal for anyone to
re-sell (as in yard sale) any used children's items, including
children's clothing.
For more information, and links to help fight this go to
craftlister.com. There is an effort to get the law amended to exempt
small craft businesses and artisans who make one-of-a kind items or
small quantities of items from the Child Protection Safety Act. We
would also like to get natural substances that are inherently
lead-free (like wood, cotton, fibers, silver, gold, glass, etc.)
exempted from the law. The only thing we can do to get our point
across is to contact our congressmen in Washington.
Please check on this for yourselves. You can go to the CPSA website
for more information. Much of the craft community is in an uproar
about this, but I haven't heard anything from TACA, so I'm posting this.
Hello ALL
Just a short note to everyone to spread the news. My first attempt as
your new secretary so be patient please! - Hope everyone had a good
holiday season and happy new year - Laurie

TACA is preparing content for the next issue of the Artisan, the TACA
newsletter. In an effort to continue the member-focus TACA has always
had, I'd like to offer the opportunity to the members across the state
to submit news for inclusion in the Artisan. Has someone in your
chapter recently received an award or honor, had a mention in the paper
or television? Send the news along so the successes of our members can
be celebrated from Memphis all the way to Tri-Cities!
For all Members in the News submissions please include the name of the
member, the chapter and the announcement. Please send it to
khaile@... before October 15 for inclusion in the next
edition of the Artisan.
Carol,
I will be there by 6.
I look forward to seeing everyone.

Hi, all!
I am an adjunct professor teaching apparel manufacturing at MTSU. I'm
also Barbara Joyner's daughter (Morningside buying club), if you
recognize that name.
I am inviting local artisans to come speak to my class about product
development in the home on October 16 from 2:30-5 here on campus.
Students are interested in understanding a more casual product
development process(creativity, idea generation, marketing, etc.). The
product does not have to be fashion-related, but if it is, great!
If this is at all a possibility for you (or better, something you might
enjoy), we would love to have you! Please let me know at your
convenience or relay any questions to my email or phone (615) 495-9215.
