We are in book 3 and we do 30 min sessions 4-5 times a week. My 11y boys won't sit for longer than that. I have had no trouble stopping and starting

My son and I are doing Barton right now and I homeschool 3 other children. Our time commitment is 1 hour per session. We are choosing to do it 4 days per week.
