Yosemite Romance Writers is proud to present their online workshop for November.

Date: 11/02/2009 – 11/27/2009

Workshop title: Crafting the Sensual Novella: How to Steam Up the Pages in
25,000 Words or Less

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at writing a sexy novella? Are you worried
you won't be able to write short? Do love scenes intimidate you? Worry no more!
It's time to learn the craft of novella writing. Creating a sensual short
storycan be fun and profitable.

And there has never been a better time to write short. With so many new and
established publishers hungry for novellas, the market is wide open—if you know
how to catch an editor's attention.

Sensual novellas are about much more than sex. And the guidelines are different
than for a traditional-length novel. This workshop will help you learn how to
plot a novella whether you are a heavy outliner or a "pantser." You'll see how
easy it is to layer emotion into your love scenes and hook the reader from the
very first sentence. The class will also instruct you on how to pack more into
less words, while still keeping your love story strong and your audience
captivated. And we will help you see how to market your story once you've sold.

We'll even include a sensual and sensory word reference list as a bonus!

Are you ready to take readers on a swift, sensual, and emotionally riveting
journey?

Note: This workshop includes handouts as well as suggested reading, and will
include excerpts from the presenters' and other authors' novellas.

Workshop title: Love on Deadline: Tips for Efficient Writing

Writing is a rewarding, frustrating, and often stressful business. We come up
with wonderful ideas that vault through our imaginations. The challenge is to
get those ideas down on paper. How effectively and efficiently we do that is
directly related to our success as authors.

Writing my first book required about ten months. Writing my eighth book required
about eight weeks, in and among juggling a half time job, business travel, line
edits, and galley reviews. Of necessity, I've leveraged my background as a
long-time magazine editor and an engineer to develop methods to get from `The
Inspiration' to `The End' as effectively and efficiently as possible.

In `Love on Deadline,' you'll learn how to rapidly bring characters alive, how
to avoid time-consuming missteps in the plotting process, how to think through
the story and break it into manageable subsections, and how to break free from
your timeline and writer's block to write chapters out of order.

About the instructor: Kristin Hardy

Three-time RITA nominee Kristin Hardy started out with Harlequin Blaze and now
writes for Silhouette Special Edition. Her first novel, My Sexiest Mistake, won
a National Readers' Choice Award and was subsequently made into a movie by the
Oxygen Network. She is a Waldenbooks bestseller and won a 2007 career
achievement award for series romance from RT Bookclub magazine. She's written
five miniseries (trilogies, duets, and sextets (for Blaze, of course)) and
participated in three continuities, most recently "The Fortunes of Texas: Return
to Red Rock." Her twenty-second book, "A Fortune Wedding," hit the shelves June
2009.

My historical western romance is coming soon from Champagne Books.

At nineteen, Josie Hart has lived a hard life on her New Mexican farm. A cryptic
letter gives her a chance to change all that and guides her on a perilous
journey toward freedom. But, there are others who want what she's after, and
will stop at nothing to get it.

Grey Paladin seeks justice after having had his fortune stolen out from under
him. He'll do whatever it takes to retrieve what's rightfully his and reunite
with the only family he has left. That is, until a feisty girl stands in his
way.

When Josie and Grey form an uncertain partnership, they must battle outlaws,
nature, and each other while riding two hundred miles of dangerous trail to
reach their destination. What they discover at the end is something that's been
sorely lacking in both their lives--leading them each to rethink what the future
holds.

In the meantime, my latest historical time travel western romance is Now
Available in Print. It can be purchased through my Buy link on my website:

I'm offering a wonderful, fun-filled gift basket as a thank you to anyone who
buys my book, Those Who Wait. (www.devinedestinies.com) It takes place on a
beach where I spend a lot of time, and have accumulated a fair amount of beach
glass. I read that another name for beach glass is mermaid tears. I love that,
and wrote a short poem about it. I made a bookmark with the poem and have
attached a tiny bottle of "mermaid tears." From now until January 1st, I am
offering along with the bookmark, a pair of earrings and matching necklace, a
wind chime and four adorable Ornaments for your tree. All these are made out of
beach glass, aka mermaid tears. Simply send a copy of your receipt to
liamay@.... Please check out my website www.lynnhones.com for further
information and pictures. Those who have received my jewelry and gifts have been
thrilled with them.
Thanks so much.

The Legend of Mermaid Tears

Sweet Grandmother mine, what is that I hear?
My window lay open, and unto my ear,
Comes the crash of the waves, and the howl of the sky,
And a song how it haunts, and stops not its cry.

Tis the Mermaid you heed, she swims near to shore,
And cries for her Captain, who sees her no more,
He grew old in time, and in human years aged,
And lived on the land, for a wife he then stayed.

Where is he, my love, my captor in time?
Who has given his pledge to always be mine.
He comes to me not, his eyes I not see,
Where is my true love, has he forgotten of me?

My Grandchild, my dear, close your window tonight,
It's best not to hear, nor catch her by sight,
As a mermaid she'll age, slower than humans in years,
And never will cease her sad, lonely tears.

Erin's Rebel is a "Fantastic: Stays on Shelf" pick at Between the Lines, the review site at Writers and Readers of Distinctive Fiction.

Reviewer Sheila Deeth said, "I loved the author's gentle hand with detail, her convincing touch with romance, and the twists and turns that she creates before a thoroughly satisfying ending...This book's well worth keeping on my shelf..."

Excerpt from Erin's Rebel

She gazed up into his dark eyes. Up close they were a deep, chocolate brown. He was so damned attractive in that uniform. Clearing her throat, she found her voice. "I appreciate what you did, Captain. That man's been harassing me."

"I suspected as much. Wagner doesn't seem to know how to be respectful to a woman."

She had trouble finding the words to reply. The aroma of sandalwood and his unique masculine scent that had floored her when he'd carried her into Doc's tent left her flabbergasted.

"I'd warned Wagner to stay away from you," he said.

"He was so drunk, I don't think any warning would have stopped him."

"He didn't hurt you--"

She shook her head, noting the concern in his eyes. "All I could think to do was get out of the tent."

"That was wise, ma'am."

She glanced at the bundle he still held. "Are those for me?"

He grinned. "If you don't mind, ma'am. I have two shirts that need washing."

"My pleasure." When he handed her the clothes, their hands briefly touched. Electricity shot through her. She caught his gaze.

His eyes widened. He swallowed and backed away a few steps, then tipped his cap.

"Ma'am." He turned away.

She watched him cross the camp and disappear from sight. If a reason existed for her coming to this time period, it had to be Will Montgomery. But why had this happened? Would she ever go back to her old life, or was she stuck here forever?

Although she'd tried to hold her emotions in check, the tension that had been building for the last few days caused her eyes to burn at the prospect. A sob built at the back of her throat. She dropped the clothing she'd been sorting in the basket and scurried into the privacy of her tent.

Hi, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Lynn Hones and my ebook, Those Who Wait, a paranormal romance, was published by www.devinedestinies.com in July of 2009. I am so confident you'll enjoy my book, that as a thank you I'm sending anyone who purchases it in the next two months, a one of a kind sea glass necklace with matching earrings. Also you'll get two bookmarks with tiny bottles of sea glass attached, a sea glass windchime and my unique, one of a kind Mermaid Tears Christmas ornaments. The people who have taken advantage of this thank you have been thrilled. I sell my items at craft shows and on ebay, but I really want to introduce my book. Sea glass is also known as Mermaid Tears and I wrote a poem that is on one of the bookmarks. Please check out my website at www.lynnhones.com for more information. I LOVE to mail out my special, fun packages, and I know it's fun to get something in the mail besides bills. (yuck)

Those Who Wait is a sweet romance between Simone O'Henley and a mysterious man named Jackson Taylor, who she meets at a remote lake front cottage. He is exactly the man she's dreamed of, but something is not quite right with him or the grove of trees near her cottage. Strong, handsome, full of old world charm in a quiet, commanding way, he brings Simone's mind and body to realms she never imagined possible. All is wonderful, until the day she can't find him. He vanishes, and she travels near and far to find him and his troubled, but loving soul. When she does catch up to him, she is in for the shock of her life.

About the book

[Epic Historical Romance.]

Ancient Egypt, 1560 B.C.

Ruling Upper Egypt from Thebes, Pharaoh Sekenenre has many enemies. Aweserre, whose grandfather seized the crown of Lower Egypt. Kamose and Ahhotpe, his son and daughter, who plot to rule in his place. And, most dangerous, the storm-god Set.

It is a time of famine. To prosper a man must be civilized and ruthless. Ramose, priest and Vizier, is all of these. Kasa, a farmer, must learn to be like him to survive. Neith, wife of Ramose, is driven, first to drink, then to courage. Hathor, who killed her son, finds love, desertion, then a second chance at love. Tiyi, the gentle masseuse, is desired by many, but desires only one.

Watched by the gods of Egypt, the conflict reaches its climax in war. The pyramids, a thousand years old when the story begins, play a crucial part.

Behind all is the God Set, with his question: 'What am I?'

"The God Set or Seth in ancient Egyptian mythology is a mystery, represented by a strange animal. In 'Blue Gold' I set out to explore this mystery in the most direct and exciting way I could. And I've always loved the pyramids!" ~ Lindsay

A BookStrand Mainstream Romance

An excerpt from the book

"What a man, my father! He has the speed of a leopard."

"My boy, son of my great wife! What a son for a warrior-Pharaoh!"

Sekenenre and Kamose toasted each other again, and the nobles lifted their own tall goblets and drank, pledging allegiance to both. Torches blazed throughout the banqueting hall as men and women dropped off their wigs and entertainers practiced final flourishes in the odd dark corners. Ahhotpe kissed the cheek of the slave-girl who had brought her another perfume-cone and, with a sigh of pleasure and relief, shook off her own wig.

"Allow me." The Pyramid loomed at her elbow. He placed the cooling cone of perfumed grease on her hair. Ahhotpe shivered as the perfume-cone melted and ran in a delicious fine rain down her face.

"Thank you, my lord." She glanced from Zoser to Sekenenre. Her father and younger brother were very drunk. She was very drunk. She looked again at the Pyramid.

He took her practiced smile as an invitation to join her on the couch. Kamose saw but did nothing. And how could she resist a man so much bigger and stronger than herself? Alive with the wine, Ahhotpe was in a mood to enjoy.

"My arms are full of flowers, and my hair is weighed down with perfumes."

She waited for him to complete the verse, as her father would have done, or to lay his broad head in her lap and have her say the rest of the poem, as Kamose did. The Pyramid merely grunted and tugged on her anklet bangle.

"We're betrothed, little bird. I don't want you to keep staring at Kamose."

"I'll gaze only at you, my lord." His face in the torches seemed sleeker, his dark eyes, lined with malachite, lustrous as the beads of his arm-bracelets. Ahhotpe saw new possibilities for Zoser. Being engaged to the man had its advantages.

Two nobles, shouting and throwing bones at each other in an argument over a Senet game, gave Ahhotpe and the Pyramid their opportunity.

"It's getting to be a real riot."

"Father's drunk. Everyone takes their cue from him." Ahhotpe pushed aside a tipsy slave, who fell giggling against her couch. "Why not come and study the paintings in my room? They're by a Keftian artist, and very fine."

The Pyramid cupped her breasts and licked his lips. "Let's go to my room instead, and trade parts."

"Such a coarse expression for love." Ahhotpe, with a drunken little smile, held up her arms to Zoser. He scooped her from the couch like a barbarian, throwing her over one shoulder.

Raising her jiggling head and squinting back into the hall, Ahhotpe noticed Kamose sprawled on purple cushions, ponderously explaining how he had saved Pharaoh's life. Her father, fondling the Pyramid's mother, smiling at everything Kamose said, talked earnestly to a drunken acrobat. None of them saw her undignified exit.

Ahhotpe lowered her head, feeling the broad flanks rub against her face, and ran her thumbs between the Pyramid's legs.

* * * *

Later, lying in the warm dark circle of the Pyramid's arms, Ahhotpe was talking to herself. This habit, born of a lonely childhood, she would never lose. Zoser snored.

"This fat pig who rutted on me and fell asleep afterwards as though I were a slave has done me a true service. Any doubts I had concerning him are gone. Sleeping with the Pyramid has cleared my mind. A pity though, that it was such a dismal lesson."

Ahhotpe smiled and scratched her nails across the man's broad chest. Zoser twitched and rolled onto his back.

"Sleep on, prince pig, and let me puzzle for myself." Ahhotpe drew aside the Pyramid's hairy forearm and wormed out of bed, taking the bedclothes with her. Zoser's hand groped for the covers, and she quirked a golden eyebrow.

"Ah, you must learn to do without. How much better it would have been for you, Zoser, had your mother ever taught a little self-denial. Of course, if she had, I wouldn't be here yet. You wouldn't have let me come until our official wedding night, and then it would have been too late."

Ahhotpe blew him a kiss. "I'm glad you're as you are, pig."

Swiftly, she sped onto the balcony. In this last hour before dawn, the night was as cold as it would ever get. A mist of dew wet her bare feet. She heard a hippo grunt, a donkey braying somewhere, both sounds carried by the Nile. Ahhotpe leaned out and listened to the closer shufflings of the palace night-watch. All was well.

"By Amun—well, why shouldn't I use Kamose's oath?—there's the wine cup!"

One hand hugging the covers round her middle, Ahhotpe darted back to the bedchamber and retrieved the silver cup. She and the Pyramid had drunk from this vessel, pledging each other before love. Zoser had drunk from it afterwards, too.

"His mistake." Ahhotpe took up the water ewer and walked back to the balcony. She washed out the silver cup and replaced it on the table, filling it with new wine.

Carefully, she applied new lip-paint and then took a good long draught from the cup. The imprint of her lower lip showed red against the metal.

She sat on the bed and listened to the Pyramid's breathing.

She heard his breathing stop.

She waited.

Blurb and excerpt for Sweet Redemption

On a cold December night, Union infantry captain, Jonathan Hackett is pinned down on the Fredericksburg battlefield trying to escape Confederate fire. But a creature of the night, more dangerous than any enemy soldier, stalks him. Jon must fight for his life as well as his soul. Maddie Emery has lost everything dear to her. Her husband and parents had passed on and her brothers are off fighting in the Confederate Army. She's alone, trying single-handedly to hold onto her family's farm, when a Yankee soldier collapses across her stoop. Maddie and Jon form and bond of love and desire, but as Jon exhibits signs of becoming the creature he fears most, is their love enough to fight off the evil of a centuries old vampire bent on destroying them?

Excerpt:

Those knocks were not made by a wolf, but he suspected the wolf had something to do with Reverend Arnwolf. "Is the wolf his minion, or can he transform himself?" he said, under his breath.

"What?" Mrs. Emery moved close. Her scent invaded his thoughts. "Please, tell me what’s going on?"

Jon sighed. "When I said I was attacked by a wild dog, I lied." He moved back to the settee and sat, his hands dangling between his knees.

She sat beside him, but held herself ramrod straight. "What or who attacked you?"

"I was pinned down on the battlefield. Spent the night in the freezing cold. All of my men had died. A man appeared. Claimed to be a minister from Austria." Jon grimaced as he recalled Arnwolf's blood-red eyes and the sharp pierce of his fangs as they entered Jon’s throat. "He offered to help me, but...instead he led me to an abandoned barn and attacked me."

Mrs. Emery gasped. "You're not saying this man--"

"He bit me on the throat." Jon pushed his hand through his hair. "I don't know exactly what he is, but he's not human."

"That's who you believe was at the door?"

Jon nodded. "I don't know how, but I now have a connection to him." He fingered the bumps on his throat. "I know things about him I shouldn't possibly know."

If anyone gets Romantic Times Magazine I hope they take a look at the 4-star
review that my historical novel Shades of Gray received in the December issue.

"This stunning story captures the reader's attention from the
start. It not only depicts the battles, but it also describes the
dedication and honor on both sides. James' novel is a moving
account of two people who are drawn into an untenable
conflict and find love, despite their opposing beliefs."

Since its marketed more as historical fiction, rather than romance, I am really
thrilled with the review. (An early Christmas present, I guess)!

Raised in a convent, shy and beautiful Simone O'Henley is innocent in her understanding of men. When she meets handsome, self-assured Jackson Taylor while resting at a friend's remote cottage, he leads and guides her to trust him. She trusts him enough to fall in love, and in her naive way, hopes he feels the same way as he brings her to wants and needs she never knew existed in her small, secular world. When phantom voices and groans come from a grove of nearby trees, she's relieved to have him by her side. However, it's the day he disappears without a word that has her terrified. Did he love her? Was he a land developer the locals told her he was, or simply a caretaker of the property nearby? Join Simone as she travels far and wide looking for the only man she has ever loved and watch as she discovers the truth. A truth that turns her simple world upside down and into the winds of thought and reason.

Go to www.devinedestinies.com for purchasing information. Also, go to my website, www.lynnhones.com and check out the gift package I'm sending as a thank you for purchasing my book. One of a kind Sea glass necklace with matching earrings, whimsical sea glass and driftwood windchime, four sweet, tiny sea glass Christmas ornaments and two bookmarks with attached sea glass bottles. I normally only send one of these out, but for Christmas I'm sending all nine. (I sound too much like crazy Larry, or one of those stupid infomercials, YIKES.) I love to send these out though, and so far the people taking advantage of this offer have loved them as well. All wonderful, positive feedback. Not only on my sea glass creations, but on my book as well. My book takes place near a beach, and the sea glass is from the same beach as in the story. Take care, and have a great day.

Love,

Lynn Hones

Hi All,

Here's a second excerpt from my newest western novella, AN ORDINARY ANGEL, which is schedule for release Dec. 9th from The Wild Rose Press!

anordinaryangel_w4123_300.jpg

Blurb:

A lifetime of polite indifference is all Julianne Spencer sees when she envisions a future with her current suitor, Mr. Terrel Lee Parker. She is looking for someone more passionate, more heroic, who can love her for who she really is, and not the proper young lady she pretends to be. Her future seems hopeless until Christmas Eve, when fate drops a wounded outlaw at her door and she comes to realize true heroes can be found inside even ordinary men

The house was dark and uninviting when they pulled into the yard. Mr. Lewis offered to come in with her and start a fire, but she gently refused.
"Thank you, but I’ll be fine. You still have a ways to go, and I’m sure the twins are tired. I’ll have a fire going in no time."
"Well, if you’re sure. Your father will never forgive me if anything happens to you."
"Really, Mr. Lewis, I’ll be fine. You needn’t worry."
"All right then, Miss Spencer, good night, and Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas!" She waved as the sleigh looped around in the yard then moved on down the road. She stood for a moment on the back stoop, listening to the fading jingle of their sleigh bells, then opened the door and stepped into the silent kitchen.
She stomped the snow from her boots and tugged off her mittens. Stuffing them in her coat pockets, she turned to the right of the door, and with the ease of much practice, lit the lamp on the cherry sideboard.
She slipped off her coat and hat and tossed them over the back of the nearest chair, then checked the ashes in the stove. Though several hours had passed, the coals were still hot. She tossed in a couple of chunks of wood from the box beside the stove and the fire flared to life. At the pump, she filled the kettle and set it on the back burner for a cup of tea.
While the water heated, she lit the lamp which hung over the table, then carried the lamp from the sideboard into the darkened parlor, intending to build up the fire in that stove and get the house warm.
The room was dark, and she stumbled over something as she entered. Lowering the lamp, the pale, stubble-coated face of a man was illuminated.
She shrieked, nearly dropping the lamp as she jumped backward into the solid form of another man. From behind, his arm reached around to snatch the light from her fingers as the other leather-gloved hand clamped over her mouth.
Squirming and kicking, she tried to bite his hand through the thick leather, but he held her fast.
"Hold still, little lady, I ain’t gonna hurt ya. Just tell me where the doc went."
