Not to extend an already long discussion, but: If this provision has been
declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, then it effectively doesn't
exist any more, and it isn't really appropriate to label our state as one that
still has this test.

Yes, actually I assumed the original question was not about home service (which can be either wired ethernet, or wireless, or both, depending on how you set it up) but about mobile wireless broadband. We have AT&T cell phones and recently inquired about adding a mobile "aircard" to our account. The cheapest plan was about $20 a month, but for that you only get something ridiculous like 20MB a month. To get a reasonable ample cap (I think it was 5GB) you'd have to pay $60/month. We opted for the "thanks, but no thanks" route....

We switched from Comcast to Verizon FiOS a year or two ago and I haven't noticed it to be much faster or slower.  I'm pretty sure neither one guarantees a speed.  I think the FiOS has faster uploads, but I don't do so much uploading that it really makes a difference.  Comcast's Web site states outright (they try to make it sound like it's a feature) that their top speeds are only for the first few seconds of a download.  This makes Web sites seem to load really fast, but then your speed goes way down if you are downloading larger files.  Verizon probably does the same thing.

Me, I'm thinking of switching back to Comcast, because, even though Comcast isn't great in the customer service department, trying to deal with Verizon's customer service is a fate I would not wish on anyone.

It's interesting that this thread is about "wireless internet" service.  FiOS is the first service I've had where the modem and the wireless router are one unit.  Every previous broadband service I've had provided just the modem and I had to hook up my own wireless router.  This sounds like a good thing about Verizon; however, the router they provide is 802.11g (i.e., 54Mbps).  For anything you're doing on the Internet, that's fine, as it's faster than any connection you are probably considering for your home.  However, many newer computers have 802.11n wireless, which works at speeds up to 600Mbps (though I think there's some reason why it doesn't really get quite that fast most of the time, but I'm pretty much out of my technical depth at this point).  If you transfer files around on your local network or stream video from a local drive, or back up your data to a local drive wirelessly, the 802.11g router will be a bottleneck for you.  I think it's a solvable problem, if Verizon is right for you in every other way (I think you could just plug another 802.11n router into one of the ports on the Verizon box, though it seems silly to have two wireless hubs right next to each other), but it's something to be aware of.

Also, it's no big deal, but my house is small and I'm somewhat annoyed that the Verizon box (the modem/router, not the crazy battery backup for the landline, which is a whole other annoyance I won't go into now), is about three times larger than it needs to be.

I very rarely feel the desire to defend Verizon, but I will say that
I've been through two FIOS installs (different houses) and both times
was met with a very good tech who worked many hours to make sure
everything was working for us. It's clear that they spend some time
training the FIOS techs.

Also, the speed is great. I'm currently able to download a 3.1
megabyte file in one second. I loved Speakeasy DSL, but I'm now
paying half the cost for more than four times the speed.

We have a fios bundle. TV, home phone, wireless. In they're commercials they say, "That's fios. That's fast.", like that means something and you shouldn't question it. My take on honest advertising would be, "Its fios. Its adequate and the rest vary similarly." I was just as happy with Verizon DSL, maybe a little more, in retrospect. It certainly isn't Web loading at hyper or warp-speed.

Locking your car door does not often help, it only gets your car window broken.
I've had this happen to a friend who had her door locked. Please be careful.

Subject: [HOPE_in_Hyattsville] research study at UMD seeking 6 year old (or almost 6 year old) kids

My son participated in a really fun research study this past weekend at the UMD Dept of Kinesiology, for a doctoral candidate looking at standing balance in children.

As you can see from the attached photograph of Suerken, he had a good time pretending he was a crazy robot.

Anyways, she is looking for more 6 year olds (or almost 6 year olds) to participate in her study, and asked us to spread the word about it.  It's one 2.5 hour session (scheduled at your convenience) with lots of breaks and snacks and your child earns a toy and $20 for his/her troubles (although Suerken told me that he thought it was cool and fun and said "it's not just about money.  it's about helping people!" --  clearly he should run for office someday! But he also is psyched to buy a lot of pokemon cards with his $20).  You can either stay and watch the research, or go out and run errands (which is what I did).

In any case, I have more information about the study and who to contact if you are interested (or rather if your 6 year old or almost 6 year old kid is interested) - contact me offlist at rumipumi@... and I'll forward you the information about the study and the contact information for the doctoral candidate (who has a background in pediatric physical therapy and it shows -- she's truly fantastic with kids)

Hopies -

My good friend and her family are posted in Mali on a USAID assignment, and are
planning a trip back to DC Jan. 3-10. They're looking for a place to stay and
would be interested in doing some house/plant/petsitting during that time.
Family is two exceedingly responsible adults (I've known them both for 10+
years) and two kiddos, ages 4 & 2. If you know of anything, please email me
offline. Thanks so much.

Cheers,
Jen Hanna

Please have a look at the message from the Police Department pasted below...

On Sunday and Monday this week, we took reports of purses being stolen from vehicles while the victims were either pumping gas or inside the convenience store at the Shell station located at 5398 Queens Chapel Road.

We have had several similar incidents in this area and urge citizens to keep their purses with them when leaving the vehicle – even if just to pump gas. If anyone has information which may be helpful in our investigation of these cases, please contact the Hyattsville City Police Department at 301-985-5060.

Also, I saw THIS headline yesterday that stated a DC Police Officer had her gun stolen at this same Shell station. If you frequent that station, keep your valuables with you.

To sign up for free alerts from the Hyattsville Police Department go to www.safecityhyattsville.org.

All orders must be submitted by Friday @ Noon for most vendors to be included in
that week's Saturday morning order. Check with the individual vendor for
details.

Order minimum is $10 per vendor. This minimum amount may be lowered by the
individual vendor at their discretion.

Each vendor is responsible for coming up with their own delivery price list and
available items for delivery.

Each individual vendor will determine if preorders need to be prepaid or not
before pickup.

It is up to the vendor's discretion that the number of orders meets their
criteria for delivery at Town Center. However, during the trial period, the
vendors will be encouraged to come every week for the first month of the trial
period to stimulate demand.

When a vendor is unable to get to Town Center for delivery, each effected
pending order customer must be contacted to preserve the integrity of the
vendor-customer relationship.

Products will be held for customers for the first ninety minutes of the delivery
period. Once the holding period is over, products will be available for sale to
other customers.

Just as a point of reference, the Amish and Mennonite "affirm". Don't Quakers and Unitarians go either way. And there HAVE to be others, right? Seriously, you'd think the "general public" would be used to it with barely so much as a mental note. No?

as posted earlier: Learned on Rachel Maddow tonight that my state, Maryland, is one of 7
proud states in the U.S. of A that has legal or constitutional
provisions prohibiting non-believers from holding public office.

The case discussed on Rachel's program has to do with a guy who was
just elected to the Asheville NC city council. His choosing the
"solemn affirmation" mode of swearing-in (rather than "so help me
god") set off some red flags among the members of the Asheville
community who apparently don't appreciate that the freedom... of
religion we so proudly celebrate is a two-way street. freedom from, as
well as freedom of.

It kinda just strikes me as describing how an oath should be administered. And probably at the time that this was made law, most would have preferred to make an oath to the diety of their choice.

What is this test that is being mentioned all about? Sorry, I'm probably overlooking the obvious place where it was posted.

This, "Nothing shall prohibit or require the making reference to belief in,
reliance upon, or invoking the aid of God or a Supreme Being in any governmental
or public document, proceeding, activity, ceremony, school, institution, or
place.", seems to me to be the most relevant to the current discussion.

While it may seem shocking to a number of people, that the writers of that law
presumed everyone's belief in God, it was not shocking at the time it was
written.

as posted earlier: Learned on Rachel Maddow tonight that my state, Maryland, is one of 7
proud states in the U.S. of A that has legal or constitutional
provisions prohibiting non-believers from holding public office.

What is this test that is being mentioned all about? Sorry, I'm probably overlooking the obvious place where it was posted.

an oath to the diety of their choice.
